Location: Dublin, Ireland
This is our kitten Spideog, which is the Irish word for robin (spid-Og is how you say it). We adopted her from the DSPCA over a month ago (by the way they are GREAT, so donate, they deserve it!) and she’s spoiled rotten now and has taken over the house – and for a first-time pet owner I have morphed into the lady to signs emails from herself and the cat and am about this close to ordering myself kitten-themed needlepoint patterns! Spideog is pretty ridiculous – she spends most of her day napping in awkward positions, hunting any bug that might fly in an open window, purring like a motorboat, snuggling, and follows my boyfriend or I room to room, crying outside the bathroom door and putting her paws under it if we dare to lock her out. She is so good and so sweet, and sure someone has got to mind the neighbors and eat the cobwebs and attack the belt of my dressing gown, those things don’t take care of themselves you know.

I can’t get over the fact that she is licking you while all paws are stretched straight out. I have had my fair share of cats and never seen that. Too darn cute. And so slim and little, just precious.

Spideog looks like a total love bug. There is something about the maramalade orange kitties that is so special. I’ve known many special orange babies. I’d love to be able to pick her up and snuggle with her on my lap and then get out some string to play. Many, many happy years with this baby.
I’d like to ask you a question if I may because I don’t get to talk to cat person from Ireland everyday. Is it true that Ireland has legends of cat shapeshifters where certain mystical cats can turn human or vice versa? Also, is there a legend of a Celtic civilization deep in the earth? I’m reading a lovely series of cat mysteries by Shirley Rousseau Murphy. Even if it is a mythic legend, but the idea of cats being able to shapeshift would be so neat. I know you posted this ages ago but I just saw it today!
I am actually a folklorist here in Ireland – shape-shifting is in fact part of oral traditions here, in particular it was once believed old women (generally old hags, as they were called) would take the form of rabbits, cats and other small creatures to do harm and steal luck from families, particularly around Bealtaine (May 1st) when the milking season begins. There are other omens and beliefs connected with cats as well, generally unlucky ones!
You are referring to the Tuatha Dé Danann – the race of people living inside the earth. Actually wikipedia sums up their tale pretty well. In addition to them fairies are also thought to live below ground in many tales – but I am certain the people you are referring to are the former.
