Archibald

Location: Winsted, Connecticut, USA

ArchibaldArchibald (Archie) is five weeks old. He’s a brave little boy, which is why we decided on Archibald for a name (brave and bold). He loves to go outside, and he’s always on the prowl. He loves his big “brother” Gilbert (who is six months old) and even though he’s only five weeks old and about 1/4 of Gil’s size, he loves to attack him and tried to play with him all day. His eyes are the bluest I’ve ever seen, and he’s got almost like a brownish ginger color. He’s very, very handsome.

This is cute, surely there iss omething similar for cats too……

If a dog was the teacher you would learn stuff like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

When it’s in your best interest, practice obedience.!

Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back in the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

No matter how often you’re scolded, don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout run right back and make friends.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.

Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

**Grapes Kick Out the Nasties**

If you need another reason to pull some grapes off the bunch, you just might have one.

Grapes contain chemical cousins — pterostilbene and resveratrol — that work as a cleanup crew, mopping up nasty free radicals in your body so they’re less likely to cause problems such as heart disease and cancer.

Protective Phenols In a study of mice, pterostilbene and resveratrol — phenolic compounds found mainly in grape skins — had an antioxidant-like knack for knocking out breast cancer cell processes. It’s early news though; researchers still need to examine how the grape compounds affect human cancer cells.

Great Grape Nutrients
But we already know that the resveratrol in grapes has heart-protective properties, regardless of its effect on cancer. And grapes have lots of other good things going for them — like anthocyanins, which attack disease-fostering inflammation, and vitamin C. So don’t wait for further evidence before improving your health with a juicy bunch.

There are so many. The greatest place to be on a Memorial Day is in Europe. Luxembourg has a wonderful view of WWII veterans that liberated them not once but twice and then gave them their country back instead of occupying them. Any of the American cemeteries are wonderful reminders of those that fought not only for their own country but for those being oppressed. Thank you so much CatRancher for remembering. You are such a great blessing!

I was out to the cemetary to visit my Mother’s grave site yesterday…soldiers are there to great you when you drive and there are flowers on every grave and flags every few feet — big flags on poles, too, not the little stick in the ground kind….they have a special monument in the cemetary where veterans of all branches of the military receive a gun salute and American flags are presented to the survivors. I went to such a service for a dear and elderly friend two years ago…it was so very moving….my heart swelled as tears fell down my cheeks when veterans presented his son with the flag. I sometimes get that same feeling when I hear the national anthem…it is a bittersweet mix of pride and sorrow, don’t you think?

Was in church yesterday singing the national anthem with husband beside me and I had free flowing tears. He has always shieled me from what he has seen. This time I have the seen the pictures from when he was there. They are covered in dirt and dust, helping with people yet always someone watching with a loaded weapon ready. Grandfather was shot on Normandy Beach, other Grandfather shot in a Pacific island. Father-in-law served on USS New Jersey durring WWII, transfered to Marines for Korea, finished his career in the Air Force in Vietnam–my husband was his homecoming retirement gift. The military has been a part of my life for a very long time. and it does hurt all those who die. What hurts worse is going to a funeral and having war protesters there. Telling the grieving family how awful their loved one was. You can hate the war all you want but there are times and places. Invading a funeral is not the time or the place. I have had to drive through protestors to take my child to recieve inadequate medical care–hoping to get her help to breath. That isn’t the time or place either. My husband is a child of God and I am sick of people hating because they don’t like the war–do they really think we like war? In other countries you speak against the governement and you disappear–so does your family. Here in this country there are more freedoms–because of men and women that defend our freedoms. I have an immense amount of pride for military members–and the sorrow for those lost is immeasurable.

Comment by CatRancher from Iowa
2007-05-28 21:46:30

When there are services here for those who have died in the war, there is a volunteer group of veterans on their Harleys that stand guard and escort the grieving to and from the cemetary. They are there to keep the war protesters away. I believe in one’s right to protest the war, but a funeral or burial or military base is NOT the place. And showing disrepect for the dead and the grieving is just plain wrong!

**Secrets of Good Grilled Food**

Making a great hamburger is a perfect excuse to go cheap at the butcher counter. More fat in the meat means more flavor, so skip the high-priced extra-lean sirloin and buy regular ground chuck instead. (Much of the fat drips out during cooking, anyway.) After grilling, the regular ground-beef burger has only 13 more calories and two more grams of fat than the lean burger, but it is much more moist and flavorful. To make 4 juicy burgers, take 1 pound of ground beef and, handling it as little as possible, gently shape it into patties (the meat strands should still show). For medium to well-done burgers, grill the patties over a medium-hot flame for 4 to 5 minutes per side, turning only once.

Keeping Grilled Food Juicy

The best foods for grilling are fatty ones because they stay juicy over high heat. Fish and chicken, because they are so lean, tend to dry out on the grill. Avoid cottony fish by cooking it with fruit or lightly brushing it with olive oil. To keep chicken from drying into jerky, leave the skin on while it cooks. (Perching it on a can of beer helps, too.) The skin is a protective jacket, and almost none of its fat is absorbed by the meat underneath. Another way to keep the juices in fish and chicken is to use only tongs or a spatula for turning. Don’t stab them with a fork. Save that for rescuing those hot dogs that have fallen into the fire.
