Skippy

Location: Norfolk, Virginia, USA

SkippyI’m 53, and have never had the privilege of being owned by a cat before! “Mom” acquired me this winter when she’d follow the sound of my jingling keys as I came home from work at night. I just couldn’t leave her out in the cold, and before I knew it she was pregnant. I watched in awe as she delivered her babies in the middle of my living room, with all the lights on, and my neighbor and me looking on! “Skippy” was last in the litter of four, but certainly was not the runt! In fact, before Mom could even finish licking her clean, she was groping for a nipple! (I swear she should have been born 3-4 days before the others!) Anyway, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching Skippy and the gang develop from babies to kitties to kittens. Skippy’s staying with Mom and me, to help soften the blow when we have to break up the rest of the family.

That looks like a toy Bob does not yet have! How can that be, I thought I had them all?
For my birthday, he and I agreed that he should be the one getting a present from me instead of the other way around. I got him a window perch so that when he falls asleep watcing nature, he’s comfortable - and doesn’t fell off! Now he hardly ever leaves “his” window! Last night he did, though, as some neighboorhood kids started the fireworks a few days early and scared him out of his wits!
What do you do with the poor kitties on the Fourth? Bob’s going to go out of his mind?

Comment by anncetera

I stay home. In Bob’s case, in spite of the fact that he hardly ever leaves his window, I’d start pulling the window shut around dusk, for at least this week.

When the firecrackers, etc. start going off at night, I usually just try to say “it’s ok, Mom’s here”. They only get real scared when the noise is close. I do the same thing during thunderstorms. (Don’t know what goes on when I’m not there, though.)

Felt so bad for my youngest, Biscuit last night, he came in from the screened in porch so fast when he heard fireworks, he blew out the kitty door. Just about gave Kittyman a heart-attack in the process! Guess I gotta stop at Home Depot tonight to get a new door!!

Living in South Florida, Bob takes the thunder storms in stride now as they seem to be a daily occurance in the summer.
I’m not sure what I’m doing for the Fourth and I’d feel bad leaving him home alone being scared.

Hey all, got a call from Merrill Lynch this morning. They want to interview me for a Director’s Assistant position. Bad thing is that it is in San Jose so that would mean an hour commute each way. I will have to say I have a dentist appt to go to the interview on Thursday 7/5. The job I am currently doing pays very well but the benefits are not very good. Always pros and cons. I know there isn’t a perfect job but it boils down to what are the benefits (medical, dental, 401k, vacation, life insurance, etc) versus the salary and is it worth it.

My babies (like their mama) will sleep through anything. If they get scared of the fireworks they usually come and find me, get in my lap and try to melt into me. This happens about once every 4 years - lol.

Your cat has nerves of steel! My big boy is a bully who won’t hesitate to tease my lil’ girl (but they DO love each other nowadays).

He is also a scaredy cat who is slowly getting more courage. Especially sudden noises scare him out of his wits. He had stayed a few days at my home when the neighbor upstairs started to drill a hole into the wall.

He ran amok to the balcony and jumped over the rail - well, would have jumped if the balcony wouldn’t have been glazed in with sliding window panes. So luckily he bounced back from the pane.

I’ve accepted the fact I can’t ventilate the heat by carelessly opening the windows - not even slightly. They are quicker than I am and they are very good with their paws.

Miu,

Try installing one (or a section of one) of those baby-gate things in the window, drilling into the windowframe and attaching it securely. That’s what I did, because I live on the 2nd floor of an apt. building. Now my kittles can stretch out on the nice deep windowsill (yay for the cool details in 1920s apartments, lol!), and if a birdie goes by and she jumps for it — no worries! She can’t get out, and she can’t get hurt, but she can see outside (albeit through a thick plastic mesh, but she can see), and she can hear all the birds, etc., and she can smell all the intriguing scents wafting in from outside. :)

HM: I am really sorry for your condition. Back pain sucks big time.

My Dad had to retire in his late forties because of continuent excruciating back pain. My ex-boyfriend, who was an ex-athlete, had to deal with that same thing. The surgeries made Dad’s back even worse. BF:s back remained in the same condition after the op. Doctors were/are stingy with pain killers because they are afraid of dependency.

I think you are stronger than either of them. Hang on!

Hey Huddy’s Mama: Does your state have medical marijuana recommendation letters? In California, there is an extensive list of injuries and/or long-term afflications that allow you to get a letter from a doctor that recommends the use of cannibis to alleviate pain. My office mate is a big proponent of the legal fight to decriminalize marijuana, and has even joined the NORML legal committee to help this battle.

Me, I’m just too lazy. I got the biggest kick a couple of years ago when I couldn’t remember something and I said, in open court: “I never should have smoked so much pot when I was young!” I thought the judge was going to have a heart attack out of shock. It was my thrill for the day-

Good luck!

Rainy days and kitty snuggles make for a purrfect day. Especially when you can curl up with a book. Jiggs loves it when I do that. We have a cozy blanket that hubby has had since he was a kid, and Jiggs and I have decided it’s out favorite.
It’s beautiful here in Jersey. Of course it is, I’m at work. Took the Thursday and Friday off and it’s supposed to rain. Hope that changes, ’cause I had planned on hanging out at our community’s pool with a rum drink (anything, as long as there’s rum in it!).

I went out with some coworkers when I was at my old job and the company was paying, and I had at least five of them! We were all so toasted we doing the “I love you..no I love you more” stuff by then. I managed to limp home (should have called hubby or gotten a room at the local hotel). Will not do that ever again. Nasty hang over the next day. ouch! But the drink was so tasty.

Latest news on the litter of kittens is that they’re playing with toys, eating with me only inches from them, letting me pet them while they’re eating, and starting to scramble over my legs and back when I’m lying on the ground. These are all good signs that they’re beginning to overcome their fearfulness.

Outdoor ferals are doing okay, except for one. He showed up this morning for the first time in days, with what looks like a big closed infection in one cheek. If he still looks this bad tomorrow morning, he’ll be visiting the vet. This morning, he got canned food, to help make sure he’s still taking in nutrition and fluids.

Poor feral with an infection. I always wonder what happens to them out there, although I suppose cat fights is the likely explanation most times. To the vet is good or meds in the food if catching is impossible like a few of mine here. Good luck!
