Feral kittens in a hollow tree

I saw a cat come out of a tree in a residential part of New Brunswick, NJ. The hole in the tree was too high for me to see into, so I held my digital camera over my head, poked the lens in the hole, and took some pictures.

Much better than anyone expected actually. thank you for asking. They gave him 4 units of blood and 1 unit of platelets. They are running tests today. When I visited him in the hospital last night, he said that he actually felt better about his health then than he had in the nursing home. The doctor at the hospital thinks that he may have been bleeding internally for a long time, it just recently was enough fo there to be a recognizable sign of it. That would explain the dizziness and the recent very rapid decline in his strength. Hopefully they will be able to find where he is bleeding and get him on the mend again.
He was a little loopy when I went to visit, but anyone who had been living with half their alloted blood supply would be. He was feeling much better and his color is beginning to come back.

ok, I’m about to say something strange. Bear with me.
I got great news today, Granddad has a large bleeding ulcer. This is great news because his doctor can treat that. The previous diagnosis was a progressive condition that was untreatable. This explains the progressive weakness and quite possibly the mental fog as well. It sounds weird to be glad that he had bloody stool, but if that’s what it takes to get a diagnosis. Lord works in mysterious ways right?

    Meezermama,
I’m happy for you and your granddad! :)
I know what it is like to get some good news on a loved one. My uncle had back surgery last Thursday. I finally heard from my aunt on Tuesday morning. It was touch and go. He had complications during his 5hr surgery, then developed a high fever but he is doing better now. I haven’t heard from her since then. The hospital was thinking of sending him home yesterday.

I’ve been wanting to get one for Bob. He’s got a small kitty condo already, but I want to get one he ca climb up high on. However, he’s always knocking his little one over and falling off. I don’t want to get a bigger and higher one if it won’t stay on the floor. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can accomplish this?

    Hello Everyone,

I doubt he will be able to knock over a big cat tree. They can be pretty heavy. I gave one to friends that weighed a ton, it was too big for my house. Shop around, look on-line, you’ll find something. The cats love them.

There are many good tall trees with large bases that are quite stable. However if you are still concerned and the tree you select does not come with one you can always add a ceiling brace. Measure from the highest platform to the ceiling and buy a heavy duty spring rod (like the ones for shower curtains about 1 inch in diameter) and brace your post with that.

    2007-07-26 16:49:56

A ceiling brace/hook is a good idea for a Christmas tree.

I’ve solved tall cat trees with too small a base by adding weights to the bottom, and/or enlarging the base by adding a larger piece of plywood to the bottom. The additional plywood also adds more weight.

That’s a great idea, too - never thought of adding weight to it - makes sense. Thanks for the advice!

I dunno, it’s been a little dry this year. Kitten crop might be sparse. On those wetter years, however, the trees put out many more kittybuds, and the kittens’ whiskers grow exceptionally long during those mid-summer hot days.

I always knew there were Kitten Trees. The gray kittens indicate a rainy summer season here in Pennsylvania, and the kittybuds in the fall are usually orange with deeper autumnal markings, although some Kitten Trees have flame point Siamese kittens.

And I am going to plant one in my back yard and watch!
