Good news about that terrible “shelter” in Pahrump. The shelter manager had hoarded ANOTHER 114 cats and custody has been turned over to the county, who turned them over to Best Friends. The trial was pretty contentious but the cats finally won. http://network.bestfriends.org/nyecounty/news/18321.html

Let’s hope that this makes a precedent for hoarding cases.

The TDK Breakfast Bar is now open. There’s stuffed French toast stuffed with cream cheese and topped with your choice of peaches, strawberries, blueberries, apples, or pears; maple-flavored bacon, apple/chicken sausage, soy sausage alternative (for the vegetarians among us), scrambled eggs with cheese, mushroom/cheese omelets, hash browns, hash blues (made from the All-Blue potato, a potato with indigo skin and lavender flesh), honey-glazed ham (are you up, Huddy’s Mama?), whole-wheat buttermilk biscuits with white gravy, French vanilla tea, and Moet & Chandon mimosas. Who wants eats?

I’ll never get rid of those tapes. Their music was so cool. I say ‘was’ because a couple of the band members are now dead & I assum, since I haven’t heard anything, that they have since disband(sp?)

I have to take a nibble on some chocolate croissants and some Eggs Benedict, but I’ll pass on the coffee. I worked at a coffeehouse in my early 20s; I’ve had more than enough coffee to last ten lifetimes.

I’m a coffee adict to rival Great Dane, but I can’t stand instant. I can smell it as it comes within 10 feet of me and it makes me feel ill. I try to limit myself now to 4 or 5 cups a day (sorry I mean mugs, of course).

most definitely! all the necessary instincts vital to survival of kittens are already present in little Dolce - keen sense of smell, sharp eyesight, spring-like reflexes……. and most importantly, overpowering cuteness and a sense of enormous feline dignity easily offended that only quick action (and kitten treats) will remedy….. :-)

oh what an adorable little wake-up call!!! *snuzzles the bundle of fluffy cuteness*

Since everybody enjoyed yesterday’s story of my business partner getting the vacuum stuck to her head, I thought I would share another funny story which gives you all an idea of the mentality of the lady I have to work with.

This is a story that she told me, so I really doubt that she would be making this up — after all, why on earth would somebody make something like this up about themselves??!! My roommate, on the other hand, swears she had to be making this up. I’ll let you all be the judge.

Anyway, the story goes that Teresa (my business partner) was with her cousin when her cousin needed to put gas in the car. Her cousin went in to pay for the gas and asked Teresa to pump the gas. Teresa had never put gas into a car before and, going by what happened next, I guess she had never watched somebody else pump gas either. Teresa grabs the gas nozzle by the handle, holding down the ‘trigger’ in the process and stood there waiting for her cousin to come back as she didn’t know what to do next. I guess her cousin had already told her which button to press to select the grade of gas because, the minute her cousin finished paying for the gas, gas started spewing out of the nozzle and onto the ground. Instead of letting go of the trigger, Teresa starts waving the nozzle around in a panic while gas is spewing out all over everything around her — including her cousin’s car!!!

Now, the smart thing to do - other than to let go of the stupid trigger- would have been to hand the thing to her cousin when she came running back or to at least drop the nozzle on the ground. But this is Teresa we’re talking about. When her cousin got back to the car, she actually had to struggle to grab the thing away from Teresa because Teresa was still waving the gas nozzle around and panicking while gas is raining all over everything around her. Once her cousin got the gas nozzle away from Teresa and put it into the opening for the car’s gas tank, she turned to Teresa and said, “That is the last time I am ever going to let you pump gas!”

I have no idea if she made any other remarks regarding Teresa’s intelligence (or lack thereof) or not. I assume she might have but Teresa didn’t mention it. I know I would have - but then again, I wouldn’t have let Teresa anywhere near a gas pump and my car in the first place.

**Cat gets high on drugs left over from dinner party**
Sep 1 03:08 AM US/Eastern

An agitated pet cat left in a cupboard overnight turned out to be high on cocaine and benzodiazepines left over from a wild weekend dinner party, a report said Saturday.
The eight-month-old Himalayan cat arrived at a veterinary clinic with dilated pupils and a racing heart, while the owner said it had trouble walking and was easily startled, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Vets Dominic Barfield and Richard Malik, who run a clinic in the Sydney suburb of Double Bay, were unable to take blood or use a thermometer to take the cat’s temperature as it was pacing incessantly around its cage.

While the owner was adamant the cat had not been exposed to toxic plants, mouldy foods or drugs, when contacted by telephone the owner’s wife admitted the cat could have licked “plates of cocaine” which had been served at a dinner party two days earlier.

A drug screen also revealed the cat had benzodiazepines in its system.

The “remorseful” owner, who was not identified, was counselled and allowed to take the pet home, but no legal action was taken as there is no legal requirement in Australia for vets to report such cases to police.

The case was reported in this month’s edition of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, the newspaper said, but did not specify when the incident happened, other than that it was on a Monday morning.

**Minks freed from cages, farmers give chase**
Fri Aug 31, 2007 10:53AM EDT

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Farmers and other locals were chasing thousands of minks let out of their cages at a fur farm in western Finland early on Friday by suspected animal rights activists.

About half the 2,500 minks released from unlocked cages in Mustasaari, 400 km (250 miles) northwest of Helsinki, had been recaptured by 1000 GMT, but it could take several days to round up the others, police said.

“We have no firm suspects at the moment. But the letters EVR were spray-painted on a feed silo at the farm. In this connection it usually means Animal Liberation Front in Finnish,” Chief Inspector Mika Jylha told Reuters, but added: “Of course, anyone could write that.”

Comment by Ann F. from Chicago
2007-09-01 19:44:55

You know, I sympathize with their goals. Raising and killing an animal for food I can live with, but raising them and killing them for their skins I don’t like one bit. There are enough alternatives for warm coats.

But don’t they realize that the mink that survive kill local wildlife in great numbers and the ones that don’t survive tend to die terrible deaths?

Comment by miu
2007-09-02 20:36:53

You expressed my thoughts too.

These ‘fox girls’ as they are commonly called here get a lot of media attention but most people don’t take them seriously. They have passion and ideals more than knowledge and good judgement. Others use them to ridicule the whole ideas of environmentalism and animal protection.

With the hot weather we’re having here, even putting the advantage on some of the outdoor cats that I can get close to,It doesn’t quite seem to be enuf. I’m going to try the yeast in the food thing, since none of them turn down wet food,& maybe that will take care of the problem.

There’s conflicting advice on garlic; there are some who claim it is poisonous to cats, unless cooked.

If you’re having hot, dry weather, I’d highly recommend getting a big 8 or 10 pound bag of diatomaceous earth (DE), and finding a good place to dump it out (where the cats would be likely to dustbathe). To ensure the cats dustbathe, I’d recommend sprinkling catnip on top of that.

While they might inhale a small amount of DE, rolling around in it will act mechanically to get rid of fleas. It may take several days, but a generous amount of this dusted through their coats will go a *long* way toward eliminating fleas.

Good luck!!

Comment by anncetera
2007-09-02 00:25:20

Oh, and the diatomaceous earth needs to be food grade or horticultural grade (not the type used for swimming pool filters). It will be fine, much like flour. Completely harmless and nontoxic, though like any fine powdery substance, it’s unwise to inhale much or rub it into your eyes.

2007-09-02 03:02:45

I got my diatomaceous earth at a local nursery/garden supply shop (Suburban Lawn & Garden in Kansas City). It’s definitely worth calling around to find. Otherwise, there are plenty of places to order online; just make sure you’re getting food grade or horticultural grade, not the kind used for swimming pools.

I’ll have to see if I can set up a good “dustbath” spot that my ferals will all share; easier said than done. Also, if it gets wet, it loses effectiveness, so make sure it’s in a spot where it will stay dry, or where you’ll replenish it after a rain.

Dolce looks like one of those toys you wind up and it goes!

Too sweet!!
Best of luck with Him/Her!
