Important: Please read:

Hello everybody.

Over the last year or so, the Daily Kitten has developed into a very lively community, and now handles more comments each day than is ideal for the ‘blog’ format the site has always used.

Conversations are hard to follow, pages can take a long time to load (which places a strain on the server we use to host the website), and many regular readers experience issues with comments overlapping.

We want to fix this, have been considering a number of different options, and this is what we would like to do:

* There will be no change to the daily kitten posting. Each day, at 3.07GMT, a new kitten will appear, and you will be able to comment on it in exactly the same way as you do currently.

* We will add an area where you can chat about other things: exchange recipes, talk about pet health, post links and stories etc. We will ask you to register, but this is a one-time-only process, and this will also give you your own page on the website, where you can tell people where you’re from, list your interests etc. Assuming that all this works, we will also look at introducing further features.

We hope that this new addition will take some load off the server (the site is close to crashing every day, and if we get many more visitors we just won’t be able to cope).

It will also have other advantages: those people who JUST want to talk about kittens can do so in the normal way and won’t get annoyed by all the other chat. Those who like Dee’s links will know where to go for them, and MerD in Colorado will be able to gather recipes for the cookbook much more easily.

What I would like from you is to know how you would like to see the forum divided up: what sections would you like to see? Here are some examples:

* Pet health
* Recipes
* News & Links
* Advice Needed
* General Chat

Any other ideas or suggestions? Anyone think this is a bad idea?

Please let us know what you think.

Thank you,

The Kittenmaster

Great ideas, Kittenmaster!!

You might split out news from links, and call them News and Helpful Links. You might also want to think about adding a section on Shopping (unless you think Helpful Links will cover it). Also might add a link called Donate. You could get some help covering costs associated with running the site, or could provide links to other animal organizations (ASPCA, Humane Society, etc.).

Perhaps a brief sentence describing each category could be associated with hovering the cursor over the link (sorry, has been forever since basic HTML and cannot remember what that function is called).

KittenMaster, how about a section for prayer requests/good thoughts for those going through difficulties? Along with an ability to follow up?

Hey KittenMaster - Great idea!

I also agree that we would need a section for prayers/good thoughts/general support/hugs/purrs and headbonks!

How about a birthday section? Since so many of us have posted our birthdates, we are having a lot of birthday wishes and celebrations now.

How about Purrs & Prayers, a section for those in hardships? (I hope that’s not too ‘religious’, we don’t want to scare anybody away with the Bible.)

Or better still, a Purrsonal, *cough*,a Personal section which could handle the celebrations, successes and crisis(es?) Would it take too much stuff from General Discussion?

I’d also like to see an “Unfluffy Zone” where the people who want to tackle the tough topics can, and those who don’t want to deal with it don’t have to.

Other than that, I think this is an excellent suggestion.

First rate idea. The site should be kittencentric and, while a lot of people were having fun and finding friendship, that had to a large extent been lost. Thank you for all your good work and to the people who have sent in pictures of thier kittens.

I have had much enjoyment in accessing the site and look forwerd to doing so in the future.

I love the idea of being able to sort more easily through the different threads of conversation on TDK. I use the RSS feed to see the newest comments after I’ve gone from top to bottom the first time through. They don’t always make sense, out of context as they are, but it helps.

I would be cautious about dividing the site into too many topic areas. The more topic areas, the more one would have to look to read all comments and update throughout the day. I know that a lot of people don’t have the time and/or interest in reading all comments, but I enjoy it.

The feature I like best about your plan is that we can each have a page giving us a chance to create a profile. There are so many of us who post regularly that I have trouble remembering a lot of the details relating to each person. Could we post pictures of ourselves and our fur babies??

I’m all for giving this a test run. It can always be tweaked if something isn’t working well. Any idea when this might go online?

Thank you for the creative ideas that led you to establishing TDK in the first place and finding ways to improve it now!

P.S. How’s the Kittenwar book sale going?

I think it’s a a fabulous idea. I want to keep up with folks, but I am overwhelmed by the number of comments. It’s also difficult for the same reason to respond to something left one day, when everyone has already moved to the next day of comments…

What about a thread devoted to information about cats? I was fascinated to find out on this site that certain types of cats (e.g., calico) are always a specific gender. Sometimes I read all the comments to see whether anyone has commented on the breed of a particular cat of the day. I’ve also learned a lot about the nicknames of certain cat characteristics — the little pillowy part of the faces where whiskers come out, but i’ve gforgotten what that term is…

Great - It makes my day to see a beautiful kitten picture and hear their name and a bit of their story - love to hear what people name kittens !!!!

Yes, too much personal blog and personal and people health affairs are discussed - some can’t seem to keep it to a minimum or exchange their own mail addresses.

Thanks for the categories - could we make that cat health and homemade cat food receipes.

Thanks again for a wonderful site that brings so much pleasure to my day.

Yes; I am not a “wimp”!! But manly Texans are’nt supposed to have TDK on their “my yahoo” favorite content page either!
I ride dirtbikes, streetbikes and jetskis. Fly airplanes,and wakeboard; not to mention snowskiing/ boarding. All that said;one of my favorite things in life is to sit down in my study and fire up my computer- and my sweet big ‘ol orange tabby jumps up into my lap and curls up and starts purring! That’s when I know the world’s going to be just fine.
So, yes i guess I really am A “Kittywimp”

Hi Jimmie, I am doing okay. Hope you are having a nice three day weekend. I am having a good one. Getting lots of sleep for one. Hubby is working the car service job and today he gets to drive a brand spanking new BMW 750il (only 500 miles on it).

Some lucky person won the Calif Lottery in Alameda but unfortunately it wasn’t me. They won 93 million dollars! I was going to go buy a lotto ticket on Sat but never got around to it. The ticket was bought at a place I have never been so no luck there. Oh well. It sure would have made life more interesting and maybe easier too. It wasn’t meant to be.

Waiting to hear from Nintendo and Adobe next week. Really hope something good comes through. Think positive. Take care.

Just sent another resume in for an office manager position at a Lutheran Church about 15 miles away. (I was raised Lutheran, though I don’t attend church. I believe God is in one’s heart). It’s part time, and if I could coordinate with the funeral home, I’d be working full time! Now is the time for prayers.

Will say a prayer for you, MMM that you get the job. Hope it all works out for you. I don’t attend Church either. I was raised Catholic but I do not believe in the Pope and hierarchial church. I do believe in God and the Virgin Mary. Just my choice.

Your post was very clear and I certainly understand what you’re trying to do for us. The site has really grown even since I first joined a few months ago.

It’s a very, very nice site, with lots of wonderful people-people who want to help animals as well as offer advice to people who ask for it.
I think it’s wonderful of you to help us continue this site, as we’ve really gotten to be a family, of sorts. I, for one, would miss it greatly if I could’t come here each day to see the gorgeous little kitten(s), and “meet” with the others here.

Count me in as a proponent–let’s see what others are saying.

Hi KittenMaster,

I’ll go along with whatever you come up with. It’s wonderful to keep up with all of my friends on this site, but realize that some people may just want to read comments about that day’s kitten. You are right about it being hard to follow conversations–sometimes I completely miss someone’s reply because I am looking at the bottom of the page, when some replies are inserted throughout.

I love Josh and his white eyeliner. What a cutie!

I don’t have a Catster page, so I put the URL to my real estate page instead so that I can have my name in pink too…will get a Ctster page when time allows. Thank you KittenMaster for looking out for the needs of everyone here. You rock!
