Scotch

At two or three weeks old, Scotch was rescued from under a deck where he had been crying for three days - feral Mom was still around, apparently, but probably wasn’t getting enough food to keep her brood happy. All kittens were looked after, though. Here he is at about seven weeks, admiring the fresh snow from the window kitten perch. He will be going to his forever home in about a week.

The kitten has been given a name by his prospective owners - “Scotch” as in scotch tape. Their other kitty is named Velcro. I hope they get along as well as their namesakes. My hands and forearms (and ankles too) are covered with scratches - all he wants to do is fight and scratch and bite and play. I try to keep him occupied when possible, or well supplied with activities (like the Cardboard Kitten Castle and the kittenBridge) so that he can have some fun by himself. The early years are so important ! (to borrow a human phrase).

what a gorgeous little ginger kitty - I hope he calms down from the biting and scratching. It’s no fun when they are still doing that when they’re big

Yes, he is calming down as he gets older. Once in a while. Not much, but every bit helps. I have him for an extra week, so I’m concentrating on preparing him for his new family.

What a lucky kitty to have found someone to build him his own castle!

Thank you for your kind words, Jennifer.
Building a cardboard castle is FUN! No building permits, no municipal engineering approvals, no dangerous power tools! Just cardboard and tape, and a bit of imagination. I haven’t updated the photo album, but the castle now has lots of little windows and the penthouse bridge over to the kitten perch by the window (where the TDK photo was taken). The windows are more than just fun, they’re actually practical. He carries some of his toys around, and windows allow me to see if they are in the castle. Also, if he barfs inside the castle, I will now be able to see it. (Luckily, that hasn’t happened yet.)
If the castle is still in good condition, I will offer it to his new parents but I won’t be offended if they don’t want it.

Really must get around to having a ginger moggy one day - one just like Scotch would do very nicely!

What a precious little snow kitty.
I’ve been told the thing to do when they bite and scratch is to walk away and refuse to play with them, but I know that’s tough!
My black cat has never quite learned how to make “velvet paws”,
so my husband and I just live with the puncture wounds left by his affectionate working us over.

How could you walk away from a face like that? Just kidding, I do try, and yes, it is tough. I’ve been using leather gloves, but he’s figured that out - just go for the wrist and forearm!

What a pretty picture!! Scotch will do well in life–he has already learned how to pose!

If Scotch is awake, he doesn’t stay still long enough to pose! If you see the other pictures of him (links below), you will realize that it was total luck - on my part, anyway. When I press the button on the camera, it does stuff for a second or two and then takes the shot.

miu…that’s what I was thinking. Velcro on one ankle & Scotch tape on the other. There you have it. Your very own Kitten Slippers.

Scotch is a beautiful orangie. Looks just like my Rusty boy. Thank you for taking over where his mama left off.

When I first saw this little guy and read his name…I thought it was short for Butterscotch because of his coloring. Later after reading your comments, I understand how he got the name. Very cute photo !
I just don’t know how you could give him up after fostering him. Thank Goodness some people can and do provide this kindness though, God Bless You !

I would love to keep him, if the conditions were right. Unfortunately, I have a 17 year old kitty, and I have a 560 sq. ft. house - there are only 2 interior doors. Scotch’s mom is a neighbourhood stray (next project: trap, neuter, shots, release) so little Scotch may be carrying Feline Leukemia or Feline AIDS or other things that I don’t want poor Schwartz (yes, he’s black. How did you guess?) to catch. Vet says that the tests aren’t reliable until the kitten is 5 or 6 months old. My house is already turned upside-down, Schwartz is stressed even without direct contact, and I have an excellent forever home - she has 4 years of experience in a Vet’s office!

The KittenWall: See the mess my house is in trying to keep 2 cats apart
(there are 3 kitten-related photo albums)

KittenCam: See the KittenCam and more photos
(KittenCam is not on much these days, as Scotch doesn’t spend much time in the nest)

NOTE: the web servers running all the Kitten stuff are in my tiny little house. The one in the kitchen gets turned off overnight - it’s the one with the photo galleries, so it’s not available from about midnight to 7am EST. My house is on rural DSL, so the server availability isn’t that great anyway. If not available now, try again later!

Aww, Scotch looks like my Shelby did at that age….

What a handsome boy, hope he outgrows the biting though. I have an old sweatshirt that Shelby loved to attack. When I waved my arm in front of him he would jump and wrap all four legs around it and be so fierce. I wear it now, with all the little holes up the arm and it’s like he’s right there with me.

2007-12-09 23:14:06

Glad he’s now indoors, safe & warm. Bless you for being a foster mom–it takes a special person to do it!

My very first cat, a blue Persian my mom bought me when I was 12 when my dog died, loved to play with my hand. So I used an oven mitt which we kept in the bottom kitchen drawer. When Puff wanted to play she would open the drawer and bring me the mitt. She lived to be 19 years old.

Thats so cute. It never ceases to amaze me how smart they are and how good they train us. :) This kitten is really cute I want to pick him up for a cuddle risking arms and hands LOL

Comment by daveb

If I’m lucky, I can pick him up sometimes when he’s not in a fightin’ mood (yet) so I get some quality time before the biting starts. Then I put him down, if possible.
