    Delilah

    We are babysitting our granddaughter Delilah, who we have nicknamed ‘Longstocking’ due to the unusual ‘pigtails’ that extend from below her ears. Our daughter chose Delilah from a litter at our local shelter. She is a sweet, purring machine.

    I’m afraid I’d be tempted to give her a haircut.

    The mark on Longstocking’s forehead is not the mark of the beast.

    Where I come from, we call it the Lily of Mary. According to legend, Mary, the mother of God, traced her initial on the mama cat who was also in the stable. The mama cat had come to the manger to look at the Baby, and she then looked up with pure love into Mary’s eyes as one mother to another.

    When Mary traced the initial on the little cat’s forehead, she lifted her hand, and as a mark of grace for the cat’s affection for Mary, a lily appeared under the initial. The lily appeared to display the purity of the love between the mother of God and the little stable cat.

    In the Islamic world, there is a similar story. Mohammed loved cats, and his own cat once saved his life from a snake. His cat fell asleep on his sleeve, and rather than bother the cat when he needed to get up, Mohammed just cut the sleeve off so the cat could continue to sleep. His petting the cat marked its forehead with an M, to show his love of cats.

    Delilah is a Maine Coon.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine_Coon

    Tell her mom to keep her very well entertained or Delilah will find ways to entertain herself. My MCs have been very creative in entertaining themselves (before I figured out their high intelligence and need for stimulation.) Dumping and sorting trash seems to be a favorite. There are always treasures to be found in there. But they will dump and sort anything, go through drawers and cupboards, and walk just about anywhere they want to. I’ve found telling them no to be futile. They are smart enough to know when you aren’t looking and will do it anyway. Just give in to it, life is easier on everybody that way. Other than that, they are pretty trainable.

    Regardless of what Wikpedia says, the two MCs I’ve owned (one pound kitty and one purebred) will/would eat anything and everything. I do feed a very high quality all-meat diet though. My current MC is a sugar fanatic and can smell sugar from the other end of the house. He has no interest in artificial sweeteners.

    They are a challenge, like living with a perpetual 2-year old human, but I will never live without one now that I’ve had one. Their unique personalities are so much fun!

    Oh, and tell Delilah’s mom that Delilah will probably play fetch with her. ;)

    Delilah reminds me a little bit of a lynx that I saw in the wild once, near Glacier Natl Park in Montana. It had long tufts of fur hanging from his cheeks and forelegs.

    She’s a great-looking cat!

    I’ve watched your video JST, Goose is a little sweetheart - I take it you’ve done the obvious, flyers through neighbours doors, posters up in the neighbourhood? You could also try checking with local vets, see if anyone has brought in what they thought was s tray. Try leaving some food outside, the stronger smelling the better (tuna is good), alongwith something that smells of you, like a sweater. I hope she comes back, they can be gone for days thinking they’re having a great adventure, not realing how worried their Mums are. {{hugs}}

    JST - little Goose is a sweetheart. She likes her Yeungling. I’m sure even if she is not normally outside that she can find her way back. Good luck and let us know when she gets back. St. Francis will watch over her while she has gone exploring.
