This is Meedge at 5 weeks old. We fostered her for a local kitty shelter until she was old enough to be adopted. Here she just had her first bath and wasn’t at all happy about it!
I can only speak for myself but it is not common to give cats baths here in the US. I have only done it for strays that may have a lot of fleas or if they get into something very dirty!
my cat knocked over a bowl of raw chicken breasts, and got a lot of the juice on her fur. I didn’t want her to go licking that raw meat juice and getting salmonella poisoning or something, so I had to give her a bath.
I did not like it when she dug her unclipped claws into my neck. nor did I appreciate the multitude of scratches running the length of my hands and arms.
It was an unpleasant bath for both my cat, and myself.
I’ve been rescueing abandoned kittens for nearly 20 years and while the baths have been few and far between there have been a few times when a bath is unavoidable: a kitten who loved motor oil and was covered in it, another one who was rescued from the dump (and had been there for a while) and lastly the kitten who thought white glue was the coolest thing ever invented (and yummy to boot). So unfortunately sometimes the little darlings need to be bathed-I have the scars to prove it. As long as it’s done with love they’re none the worse off. And I’ve had a few that ended up loving water!!! Go figure…This one is adorable…and squeeky clean!
Ok, thanks for that. Obviously I’d bath Pickle and Noo if they got something on them that I didn’t want them to lick off or for fleas, which thankfully Pickle’s never had! I’d love to foster kittens, but I’d end up with a house full of cats and no room for me.
Yeah, it’s hard to let them go once they’re old enough to be adopted. We had her for about 3 weeks, then took her to be adopted. Fortunately, she was gone within 2 weeks so I didn’t have to keep seeing her behind bars at the shelter. The previous 2 times, we fostered entire litters (5 in each) - that was fun too, but of course I got attached to all the little monsters!
If you have the money, I highly recommend taking your cat to a pet groomer for a bath. Most dog groomers will bathe cats. A lot of people think, “Ugh, my cat won’t let me bathe him/her, why would my cat let a stranger do it?” But it turns out that cats understand that when you’re the one doing the bathing, that it’s not a normal thing to do. But they have no expectations whatsoever about a groomer. So they tend to be more accepting when someone they don’t know in a place they don’t recognize does the bathing. Just a thought.
wanna hear something funny, my kittens 13 weeks old and the other night i had the tub filled to take a bath and he wason the edge and fell in, well that didnt go to well he scratched the hell out of me, then after i went to dry him off he tried the same thing over again.. What a perfect picture of misery!
little wet baby! She’s a little cutie. =^..^=
Oh, poor little kitty! Nothing looks more miserable than a wet cat. I bet she’s a cutie when she’s dry, tho!
Oops I practically said what you did haha. She has big eyes, cute kitty!
“What have I gotten myself into?!” She looks sad, poor kitty. I bet she’s adorable though when her fur is dry!
Aww, poor little thing! Bet she grows up into a real sweetie! Is it commonplace to bath cats in the US?

Not really, they don’t like it. But she was filthy and we had no choice! :>)

That’s exactly what my cats looked like whenever I had to give them a bath. LOL
sometimes you have to…for fleas and other things..thing is someone cares enough for her to give her the bath…she will survive.
Bathing cats once a week is also supposed to help reduce allergens, for allergic cat-lovers. So some may for this reason.
