PewterWe volunteer at a no-kill rescue shelter. One day a large group of cats and kittens were rescued from a very bad situation. As you can see from the picture I took in the shelter, this sad face made us fall in love with “Pewtie” and take her home. She is the most loving and appreciative cat we have ever adopted!

I just can’t get over this kitten! I have rescued cats from very bad situations. If they’re adults, there can be issues that they just can’t overcome. With kittens, they can grow up to be the most loving things. It’s like they know that there are good humans out there or they’re able to forget. Bless you and your wonderful shelter and good nature.

*PRETTY PEWTER* What a lovely girl, and a sweet expression.
There is a cat named Pewter in the Mrs. Murphy mysteries by Rita Mae Brown. They are quite funny, and usually not very bloody. Mrs. Murphy and Pewter are the cat detectives, who work with the “help” of their Corgi buddy Tee Tucker. Much fun!!

HI Jan. Are you familiar with “The Cat Who…” series of books by Lilian Jackson Braun? There about a detective who gets help solving all his mysteries from his two siamese cats. They’re clever and entertaining.

Who could like cats and mysteries and not like Koko and Yumyum? It’s always fun to watch the humans try to figure out WHAT Koko is trying to lead them to (my grammar teacher would not like that construction). With Rita Mae and her co-author Sneaky Pie, the animals talk to each other, so their thinking is a little clearer. Of course, the stupid humans still can’t understand, so they have to be pushed, led or prodded by the four-foot gang.

You will enjoy them, Kim. They are set in rural Virginia, which makes me homesick. Rita Mae and Sneaky Pie(a shelter cat) live in Charlottesville, one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Each one stands on it’s own, but they are even better if you can read them in order. ENJOY!!

Boschka- I live 10 miles north of Camas, about as far from Pullman as you can get, and still be in WA. We are just NE of Portland, OR; at the mouth of the Columbia Gorge. My next door neighbor, former cat sitter and courtesy niece is at WSU, freezing her tailfeathers off!!

I’d forgotten about Midnight Louie, but he’s a hoot, too.

Kat–the Mrs. Murphy books are not kids books, none of these are. The Cat Who are ok for older kids(10+), but the others have some “adult situations”, and the Midnight Louie ones are sometimes a little creepy for kids.

I wanted to add: If anyone wants to sign a petition for the Canadian seals, you can also do so at http://www.thepetitionsite.com it has all kinds of petitions, even ones about helping dogs and cats… I got there through care2.com- which for the most part is for animal lovers, or anyone who has a cause-I’m in a “save the big cats” group, “cat lovers”, “pets in need”-you get the point. I also have my own group called Maine Coon Lovers. It’s fun for meeting people. Anyhow, See Everyone on PD’J and KCotD!

to do so! For some reason, I thought they stopped clubbing the baby seals a few years ago. It breaks my heart to find out they are STILL doing it! I have no problem banning all things Canadian. I hope they know we are serious about this!

On a lighter note! Pewter is a living kitty doll! I agree that kitties that have had a “bad situation” as babies ARE able to forget…I mentioned once my Emily was found in a dumpster with 2 littermates at about 1 1/2 weeks old. She was taken care of by the kindest of women, and EXPECTS adoration!

IT WOULD BE HYPOCRYTICAL FOR ME TO SAY THAT NO ANIMALS SHOULD EVER BE KILLED FOR ANYTHING—–AFTER ALL, I’M NOT A VEGETARIAN—-BUT THE *WAY* THEY ARE KILLED IS HORRENDOUS—THEY ARE CLUBBED AND SKINNED–USUALLY WHILE STILL ALIVE—-IF THEY *MUST* BE USED FOR FUR, THERE HAS TO BE A MORE HUMANE WAY TO DO THIS! THE MEN WHO ARE DOING THIS ARE CANADIAN FISHERMAN—THEY WOULD NOT BE WITHOUT WORK IT THIS CEASED—THEY DO THIS TO SUPPLEMENT THEIR INCOME—THAT’S WHY WE SHOULD ALL BOYCOTT CANADIAN SEAFOOD PRODUCTS—*HSUS.ORG* HAS A LIST OF PRODUCTS TO AVOID. THANKS AGAIN.

YOU KNOW, WE CHAT ON THIS WEBSITE EVERYDAY, BUT I DON’T THINK WE KNOW HOW MANY PETS EVERYONE HAS…..SO LET’S “INTRODUCE” OUR PETS—-NAMES AND AGES, TOO, PLEASE!

I WAS RAISED ON 6 ACRES IN MICHIGAN ON A “MINI-FARM” WITH DOZENS OF ANIMALS, BUT NOW I ONLY HAVE 3 CATS:

ATTICUS IS ALMOST 2 YRS OLD (NAMED AFTER THE PERFECT GENTLEMAN ATTICUS FINCH THAT GREGORY PECK PLAYED IN TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD)—-HE WAS ABANDONED UNDER A TREE AT MY APARTMENT COMPLEX AT 2 MONTHS OLD DURING HURRICANE CHARLIE IN AUGUST OF 2004—-ACTUALLY SAW THE GUY THROW HIM UNDER THE TREE IN THE POURING RAIN….I ASKED HIM IF IT WAS HIS CAT AND HE SAID HIS MOM WAS REFUSING TO KEEP IT IN THE HOUSE ANYMORE BECAUSE SHE WAS ALLERGIC TO HIM! I ASKED WHY THEY COULDN’T WAIT TO TAKE IT TO THE NO-KILL SHELTER IN THE MORNING, BUT SHE WANTED IT OUT OF THE HOUSE THAT NIGHT! THE CRUELTY! OF COURSE, MY INTENTION WAS TO TAKE HIM TO THE SHELTER IN THE MORNING, BUT AFTER HEARING HIM PURR IN MY EAR LIKE A LITTLE WASHING MACHINE, I FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM OVERNIGHT AND HE’S STILL WITH ME AFTER ALMOST 2 YEARS. AND HE REALLY IS A PERFECT GENTLEMAN!

MY OTHER 2 CATS ARE EMILY, SHE’S 7 MONTHS ( NAMED AFTER EMILY DICKINSON—BECAUSE SHE’S CRAZY, JUST LIKE EMILY DICKINSON–HAHA–) AND GABRIEL, HE’S 8 MONTHS (NAMED AFTER GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ BECAUSE HE HAS SUCH A SENSE OF WONDERMENT) THEY, TOO, WERE ABANDONED 2 MONTHS AGO IN MY NEW APARTMENT COMPLEX!
THEY WERE LOCKED IN A BEDROOM WITH NO FOOD OR LITTER–LEFT TO DIE–AFTER THE OWNERS WERE EVICTED—THEY NEVER CALLED THE LANDLORD TO TELL THEM THEY WERE IN THERE OR CAME BACK FOR THEM—-I DISCOVERED THEM 3 DAYS LATER—-LITTLE TERRIFIED, STARVING KITTENS—AND NOW I’M THEIR NEW MOM, AS WELL! THIS HAS ALL BEEN A GODSEND BECAUSE I PUT MY 19 YEAR OLD CAT, JULIET, WHO I HAD SINCE SHE WAS 3 MONTHS OLD TO SLEEP IN AUGUST…..I STILL MISS HER EVERY DAY…..BUT THESE 3 CRAZY CATS ALMOST FILL THE VOID.

LET’S HERE ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE’S PETS!

Hey Dee, I have 3 kitties & 1 dog. And I have fostered to be exact 41 cats & kittens. Marley we rescued from the SPCA @ 3 mos. old. He will be 7 next month. He is our mellow laid back kitty. Not very social to my other cats; loves my older son (sleeps w/him at night). Emma was a foster w/a “boo boo” eye. She can only see out of her good eye. We fostered her @ 3 mos. of age and she will be 2 in August. Then there’s Benji (I know, it’s a dog name.). He is the youngest but not the smallest! Also a foster, we got him when he was about 5 wks. old. He had huge feet, and he now weighs more than my Emma. He will be 1 yr. old July 8th. He is the clumsiest (sp?), but probably the most affectionate. He is in love w/our Sammie girl (the dog).

    Glad you’re back Bagheera!!

Hi Dee, that is so true.
In February, all 3 of our kitties were at the vet for a dental special (teeth cleaning) so were gone from our house for the day. My husband happened to have to go home during the day and he commented how absolutely empty and hollow the house was without its “soul”. He said he can’t imagine *not* having kitties in the house.

BTW, do any of you brush your cat’s teeth? We don’t and I don’t know that any of them would take to it very kindly. Luckily, all of our kitty’s teeth were in OK condition.

Donna—I’ve never brushed my cat’s teeth—I guess I’m an unfit mother!—I only feed them dry food and their teeth are find—-my 19 year old had good teeth, too—before she went to “kitty heaven”…

I don’t brush my kitties teeth either. Have thought about it, because the vet says the need to have a cleaning. They don’t have bad teeth though. Marley is the only one I forsee having teeth problems. He, I swear I watched him, doesn’t chew his food! He just swallows it whole! Does anyone else’s cat do this? I think of brushing a cat’s teeth in this way: God designed kitties to live from around 16 to 20 yrs. Granted I know and I’m sure others too, know cats who’ve lived longer, but their teeth are made to function for those few yrs. I also know they can still have dental problems, and then you would definately have that fixed, but…that’s the way I see it. Maybe I’m an unfit mom too, Dee. I love my kitties to death and they see a vet regularly, but I don’t brush.

We only feed our three kitties dry food too. I think that helps. When I was little and we had cats, they got canned food (disgusting stuff ). My then-special cat, Hobo (yes, he was a stray) eventually had to have 3 of his 4 “canine” teeth removed due to absesses when he got older. I don’t know if that was related to his diet or not. Being young, I didn’t pay attention to that kind of thing.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t brush their cats’ teeth.

I have a dog and 2 cats. My dog, Sammy is a cocker spaniel mix. He’s 13 now, but pretty spry for a grandpa. My youngest cat, Oreo, keeps Sam on his toes. They wrestle all the time, and Sam is very jealous of every bit of attention given to Oreo. Sometimes I have to pet them at the same time!! Oreo is almost 3 and while he is playful with Sam, he is also the biggest lap cat I’ve ever seen. He will plop himself on your lap, with no regard for your book, newspaper, or computer. If you don’t give into his demands, he purrs loudly and continues to head butt you until you give in. He will not be denied, which, I suppose, is appropriate behavior for the spoiled fuzzy little man that he is. My other cat is named Chick. She was a stray kitten that I fed and she adopted me. She arrived a few months after I had my precious Bear euthanized. (He had cancer.) I managed to trap her and have her spayed and I wanted to bring her in, but my boyfriend didn’t want a cat in the house. In retrospect, I should’ve dumped the guy and brought in the cat. Well, the guy has since been dumped, but Chick won’t come into the house. I’ve tried, but she doesn’t seem happy. I don’t think she wants to give up hunting birds and moles for the the easy life of a house cat. She never strays too far from the back yard–she’s always there when I go out.

This may sound odd, but every time my cat didn’t like a guy I was dating, in almost no time he proved to be a “bad catch”—likewise, she always loved the good guys. Animals really can sense things that we can’t.

HI DEE, I have Oscar, an Orange Tabby. He’s 8 years old. He was one of five in the litter. Over the past 7 years we have fostered four cats and 2 dogs. Oscar gets along very well with all animals, except birds and moles, he loves to hunt those, but prefers to be an only child. He was raised by a dog for the first few months before my husband and I were able to take him. We had a cat named Arthur who died about two years ago of old age. He and Oscar got on very well, Oscar knew Artie was the Alpha male and respected that. Both my husband, oldest son, and Oscar himself has Asthma. Hubby says no more new pets for a while. I say just wait until the kids start begging. He’s a sucker for animals in need!

Nothing dramatic about how we came together, the important thing is that we indeed, did come together. He’s the most loving cat I’ve ever had!
