Sadly, I don’t think meds help with that type of thing - unless they just keep the patient unconscious.

Of course, what we have here may not be true mental illness but just a case of arrested development. I’m reminded of certain 12-year-olds who will do anything to nauseate the grown-ups.

I KNOW MOSTLY EVERYONE HAS READ THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE, BUT I’M PUTTING IT OUT AGAIN—FOR THE NEW PEOPLE TO THE SITE…

HI, EVERYONE. I HATE TO PUT A DAMPER ON THINGS, BUT
SINCE WE ARE ALL ANIMAL LOVERS, WE NEED TO BAND TOGETHER TO ABOLISH SOMETHING TRULY HORRIBLE: THE ANNUAL CANADIAN SEAL HUNT STARTED SATURDAY MORNING—–THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES HAS A GREAT WEBSITE TO GET LOTS OF INFORMATION AND TO SEND A FORM LETTER TO CANADA’S PRIME MINISTER TO STOP THIS BARBARIC HUNT. THE WEBSITE IS *HSUS.ORG** PLEASE FORWARD THE FORM LETTER TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE. THANKS, EVERYONE.

Comment by Michele
2006-03-31 11:43:15

Actually, I have to disagree with the Humane Society on this one. Harp seals are not endangered, and this is not an open hunt. The Inuit who hunt them are doing so for food, not fun. They will sell the fur or use it for themselves- in other words, they’ll recycle. As cute as harp seals may be, they actually starve out other animals and themselves if they overbreed, in the same way kittens and puppies would if they weren’t spayed. Just because an animal is cute doesn’t mean that its life is more important than that of humans and other animals that aren’t as visually charming.

Comment by Karen S.
2006-03-31 12:14:44

I don’t know what the Humane Society’s official position is, but it is my understanding that the objections from the folks that comment on this web site aren’t as much about the seals being hunted as it is about the way they are killed. Most of us eat hamburgers and enjoy a good steak now and then, so I think we all understand about killing for food and about thinning out the over population. However, it needs to be done in a humane way, quickly, so that the animal doesn’t suffer. I don’t think clubbing an animal in the head is either quick or painless. I don’t disapprove because the animal in question is cute. I disapprove because it is a living creature and the method is needlessly cruel.

I don’t comment every day on this site, but I usually read most of everyone else’s comments. Yes, everyone overdoses on the kitten cuteness. However, I don’t think anyone would be so shallow as to say that only a cute animal’s life has worth.

I don’t think you’ve read and understand what the Humane Society is telling us in the website! Why would they say they were endangered if they weren’t. These are fisherman mostly that are clubbing them to death for their furs! Not food. Granted, maybe some of the fisherman are Inuit and eat the meat also, but…DEE!, help me out on this one. Bagheera?!

(Comments wont nest below this level)
2006-03-31 12:54:37

I agree with you guys. I read an article written by an appointed “head” of those fisherman where they were asking for support BECAUSE they make thier “winter” living off the baby seals and thier fur. *Michele*, I don’t know if maybe you jumped in without reading or what, but you are heavily outweighed by not opinion, but fact. And maybe someone may have commented that the seals are cute, but from the START we have all said it was inhumane-THAT is why we are boycotting and petitioning. Don’t believe me? Go back a few days and read the blogs. You’ll find it. And by the wasy, a VERY SMALL percentage of those fisherman are Inuit. AND the Inuit are allowed to hunt seal whenever they want, however they want, because it is part of their lifestyle and has been for thousands of years-before there was a “Canada”.

If you ask me, if they didn’t over-fish the Oceans, we wouldn’t have this problem, there would be so many fish, the fisherman would be able to fish all year round. On Petition Site, there are petitions also asking the respective governments (ours and Canadas) to tighten fishing laws (to combat over-fishing).

Uh, Michele, I think you should do some serious reading before you start berating the Humane Society. Yes, the Inuit hunt seals but the seals they hunt are ringed seals not the Harp seals in question. Also, we are talking about Canadian fishermen who use clubs, axes etc. to kill the Harp seals and they do it to the tune of better than 300,000 of the little guys. They’re only interested in the pelts (meaning money, not food) and they skin a great percentage of them ALIVE. Please also note that these club wielding SOB’s are employed as fisherman and do this as a way to make extra money supplying the inhumane European fashion crowd with another un-needed coat or collar. (Seal fur articles are aginst the law over here).

Now, once again, would you like to defend this practice?

2006-03-31 12:26:16

Oh! That is so much worse than I thought! Why would anyone skin an animal alive? That’s horrifying. Unless they just enjoy watching the animal suffer. That is just sick!!

Comment by Dee from Tampa
2006-03-31 12:34:11

Michele…I’m not referring to the Inuit—what you wrote in reference to that is all true. What I’m referring to are the Canadian sealers—they are fisherman who earn %5 of their living during the off-season on the hunt. The hunt is for the sole purpose of their fur—-not their meat. As I’ve mentioned before, as a meat- eater I would be a hypocrite to say no animal should ever die for a human—–it’s the WAY they die that is horrific. After they are clubbed (some are shot—atleast that is less cruel) they are skinned–usually alive. After all, time is money to the sealers and they are trying to hurry with the kill (they are paid per seal—not per hour). Thus the reason for skinning alive. 350,000 seal pups will die this year—soley for their fur. And your comment about the over-population about harp seals is incorrect. There have been several media reports (including one at HSUS.ORG) that state the ice cover of the Gulf and the Front is at a record low since the 1960’s. The HSUS and The Humane Society International have stated that allowing the sealers to kill their full quota this year could have “dangerous consequences for the seal population.”

WAY TO GO LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I just want to say I don’t think we should boycott all things from Canada. Just the ones that reflect the whole stupid idea of killing baby animals for fur (while alive). If you know what I mean. I myself am part canadian. PLEASE don’t hate me because I agree with everyone on this topic. I signed the petition and passed it around.

Comment by Dee from Tampa
2006-03-31 13:57:40

Danielle—-that’s exactly right. What the HSUS advises is a boycott against Canadian seafood. Some may like to carry it further and boycott all things Canadian, but hitting the sealers directly in their pocketbooks should be more than sufficient. HSUS.ORG has a list of what seafood to avoid. Many of you in the northern states may be unaware that you are eating Canadian seafood. Again, the sealers are off-season Canadian fisherman that derive only %5 of their income during this brutal hunt.

Comment by Kat1
2006-03-31 14:30:52

Danielle, I love Canada. HSUS is only advising people to boycott Canadian “seafood”, not everything else. We’re trying to affect the fisherman that are doing these horrible killings to the innocent baby seals.

Just a note about another comment that Michelle made that’s been on my mind. She said that the Inuit people were hunting the seals for food. That’s well and true, but they aren’t hunting the babies. Why would if they’re hunting for food kill a small baby seal. They would be hunting for the big adult seals w/the most meat, right?

Frankly, my dear, you do not appear to have a single clue about the annual seal hunt, which is providing money for people to feed their families. Don’t believe anything of what you hear and only half of what you see. No one loves animals more than I do. My cat rules my life. But I don’t like to see children go hungry to satisfy the greed of animal rights’ organizations who fill their coffers every year on the backs of poor defenseless children.
If you want to do something worthwhile donate to groups that feed those who have never had a chance in life.

2006-03-31 14:33:35

LOL I have a company picnic tomorrow, and when they first announced it, everyone was like, For real? Or are we all gonna get there and-April Fools Day, there’s no picnic!!! But then they passed out parking passes, and we were like, OK, but now we all have to watch each other!! I HATE April fools day!

Hey Danielle, I wouldn’t dislike you just because you’re part Canadian. Not all Canadians are bad. Look at Paul McCartney, he’s doing his part to try to get the PM to stop this. You have to look at it this way, by not buying Canadian seafood, we’re hurting the Fishermen/sealers. I would imagine that NONE OF US BUY FUR, so I don’t have to go there. But I believe that many of us think that by boycotting ALL THINGS Canadian, we are hurting the economy there, therefore telling the PM EXACTLY how we feel. So don’t take it like we’re just mad, it’s more like we’re trying harder to get the messege across :)

Can cuteness cause actual physical pain? I think it very likely. Those blue eyes seem so intent in drawing out every ounce of brain matter that I possess. Which isn’t much, so it’s fortunate that they’re teeny kits. It’s totally within their Kitten Power.

Thanks!

The only cats I see are when I walk to work - one house has a trio of lovely ones. And all of them seem fascinated with my feet! I take one step with one foot, and they ‘attack’ the other one, either laying on it, or rolling over it! Do cats have some sort of fascination with the locomotion of human feet? Still, I can’t think of a better reason to be late for work.
