Sorry, but I think since we’re in the US, Ralphie only speaks English and catinese!

And by the way, Aimee is my name in French! (Amy-which means loved)

As promised, here is more cat folklore….(I love the King Charles I anecdote)
*The Cat as a Soothsayer Part II*
Early Americans believed if a cat washes her face in front of several people, the first person she looks at will be the first to get married.
If there is a cat washing on the doorstep, the clergy will visit - American folklore
When the pupil of a cat’s eye broadens, there will be rain. - Welsh superstition
If you find a white hair on a black cat, you will have good luck.
One Roman dream interpretation was that dreaming of being badly scratched by a cat foretold sickness and trouble.
French peasants thought that black cats could find buried treasure, if they followed a specific ritual: find an intersection where 5 roads connected, then turn the cat loose and follow him.
A strange black cat on your porch brings prosperity. - Scottish superstition
Tortoiseshell cats were believed to be able to see into the future and could give the gift to a lucky child in the household.
Sailors believed that if a cat licked its fur against the grain it meant a hailstorm was coming; if it sneezed, rain was on the way; and if it was frisky, the wind would soon blow.
When the pupil of a cat’s eye broadens, there will be rain. - Welsh supersition
A bride will have a happy married life if a black cat sneezes near her on her wedding day.
Sacred cats kept in a sanctuary in ancient Egypt were carefully tended by priests who watched them day and night. The priests interpreted the cat’s movements - twitch of a whisker, yawn, or stretch - into a prediction of an event that would happen in the future.
The Pennsylvania Dutch place a cat in an empty cradle of a newlywed couple. The cat was supposed to grant their wish for children.
In Scandinavia, the cat stood for fertility.
It was a popular belief that cats could start storms through magic stored in their tails - so sailors always made sure that they were well-fed and contented.
When you see a one-eyed cat, spit on your thumb, stamp it in the palm of your hand, and make a wish. The wish will come true. - American superstition
A black cat crossing one’s path by moonlight means death in an epidemic. - Irish superstition
The Hindu believed the cat was the symbol for childbirth.
King Charles I of England owned a black cat, whom he valued very much. He treasured the cat so much that he had his guards watch over it 24 hours a day. As luck would have it, the day after the cat died from an illness, the king was arrested.
Some believed that black cats carried demons.

Awwwwwwwwwwh!! What a pretty kitty!! I used to have a kitten with 8 toes in the front and 5 toes in the back!!!

Comment by alice
2006-06-24 09:51:42

8 toes? Wow you are so lucky!

This kitten photo also reminds me of something really ridiculous and cute that cats do: stick their tongues slightly out. Our adult cats do that periodically, just sit around with their tongues just slightly sticking out, sort of like a person with food on his or her face, who doesn’t know it. Its very funny, especially if the cat is otherwise attempting to look all snotty and better than you. Which is to say most of the time.

Alice—My cat Gabriel sticks his tongue out slightly when he’s sitting on top of me, purring and “making bread”—-but it’s really creepy, because he DROOLS all over me. Yuck.

One of my cats, Blossom, wakes me up almost every time i go to sleep because she always needs something! She’ll scratch me, and if she’s really despersate she’ll nip on my arm!

Well Dee, it sounds like Gabriel has everything just the way he wants!

Cat drool seems somehow so uncatlike, and yet…
I used to know a cat that if you petted it, it would happily drop off to sleep in your lap, and then drool continuously, creating a veritable pool of slobber, not unlike a newfoundland dog.

When our cats stick their tongues out, its with their mouths closed. Its really like they have forgotten to put it away after they were done with it. Ridonkulous!

My first cat had 3 levels of contentment:
1. Purr
2. Knead
3. Drool

When Hobo started drooling, he was in ecstacy.

Well personally I think this website is about praising cats and stating their qualties. Not to be rude myself, but I think you’re being very rude. If cats weren’t unique, why would people love them?

2006-06-24 21:12:39

Have to go with Ben on that one. The kitty is darling! But yes, life would be a drag if we all thought the same thing. Prime example: Episode on SpongeBob (my kids watch it), Squidward thought he wanted everyone to be and think the same. That was fine for a while, but he soon learned that life just wasn’t any fun anymore. Yes, it’s very late and I just used Spongebob Squarepants to get a point across!!!
LOL!!!

Ralphie is simply adorable– toes or no toes. I love gray kitties.

So glad to know black cats with a white hair are lucky, and also that having a black cat show up on porch is good. Great cat lore

We confirm can confirm all that at our house as Angus who showed up on the porch is a beeeeautiful black kitty with some lovely stray white hairs.

Aww how adorable, i have an orange and white stray i took in almost 6 years ago and he has the extra toes and is so so sweet. He was not in good physical shape and was clearly abused til i got him off the street. Once i got his broken bottom jaw reset and had him neutered hes been the biggest sweet baby. I just love him to death!! He has a big bro (another kitty) who is ten, and they even fight like kids sometimes……i just absolutely love both of them and now that my son is almost 20, im now raising two more kids..lol The pics of the kittens are great and I look at them every day and read about all them…thanks
