Now that’s true contentment! You know you have a kitty that not only loves you, but trusts you, when they will go in this position, relax and fall asleep. Glad you found each other. Apparently a perfect match.

Tear-jerker poem coming up…..

*The Meaning of Rescue*
Author Unknown

Now that I’m home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed,
I’d like to open my baggage,
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry,
So much to regret.

Hmm. . .Yes, there it is, right on the top,
Let’s unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my perch hide Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave,
I still have to upack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn’t good enough - for they didn’t want me.

Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things,
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
I pray that you do - I’m so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage,
Will you still want me?

Dee that made me tear up. One of my cats, Emma, was abandoned by her first family, was near starvation and at a kill shelter and was a day from being put down when a no-kill organization rescued her. They spayed her but had to abort her kittens in the process. I went to Superpets and fell in love with her and took her righ home to be company for my kitten. The sweet purry cat at Superpets turned into an angry ball of fur!!!!! She bit me and smacked our calico “teenage” kitten around. We held on, ended up getting another kitten for her to nurture (good advice from the vet) and one day she unpacked her bags and is now the sweetest most loving cat. She still mothers the boy kitty four years later and she and Gracie the Calico are friends. Rescuing adult cats can be a gamble, but patience, love and time can make it so worthwhile. She’ll always have some baggage. She NEVER has a desire to leave the house and she gets frantic when the food bowl is empty, but I am always glad I took the chance and brought her home.

ppearson—-I completely agree about rescue pets. My three cats were all “throw-aways”. I actually saw one being left under a tree (as a kitten) by his owner during Hurricane Charley 2 years ago. I think our hearts break even more when we know that someone took them in and then abandoned them. And I love hearing about Emma and her happy ending.

My cat, Princess, was abandoned (along with her siblings) at a small college where I was working. She survived by begging food from the students outside the cafeteria. I brought her home when the President of the college told the security guards to round up the strays for animal control. Students and other faculty members got the rest of the cats before animal control was called. In fact, the security guards helped us catch them (they had also been feeding them - much to the President’s displeasure). Princess had some “baggage” because not all of the students were kind to her . I’ve had her for six years now and she is a very
affectionate and spoiled cat. She manages to get outdoors occasionally but never gets far from the house and she also gets frantic when the food bowl gets empty.

i just don’t understand why someone would choose to not get a shelter kitty. they need some one to love them just as much, if not more than, any regular kitty. i can’t wait to move into a pet friendly apartment so i can adopt shelter kitties and be an animal foster mom!

Not a care in the world! What beautiful coloring and that tummy! Needs a belly rub right away! Miles is a perfect name as he strikes a regal pose. He is one lucky kitty. Bless all for taking a shelter kitty. They do need love too. All orphans do. My last 3 cats were orphans and they are all very loving individuals. Gotta love them!

I rescued my Siamese mix from a shelter; he’d been found on the street. He had, and still has, an old injury to one of his hind legs/spine that causes him to wobble when he walks. The casual observer might think he was drunk–he’s pretty unsteady, can’t jump very well, and tends to knock things over with his butt when his legs go out from under him. The vet theorized that someone had beaten and/or kicked him, a theory I was inclined to believe after observing his violent reaction to any feet coming near him when I first brought him home. I think a lot of people would have taken him back to the shelter because of his moodiness and aggressiveness, but I knew if I did, he’d probably never find a good home and would probably have been euthanized. He’s a beautiful cat (silky black fur and green eyes) and smart as a whip, so instead of taking him back, I spent the last 8 years working to earn his trust and confidence. He’s still pretty temperamental and quick to bite or scratch, (so much so that my mother won’t go near him!) but he also comes up to me every night before bed and mobs me for a big heaping dose of cuddles and headscratchies, and is so purry and affectionate that I know while he may be tetchy sometimes, he loves me more than any human he’s ever met, and given how his life started out, that’s a really big step forward. I wouldn’t trade him for anything, baggage and all.
Give shelter cats a chance! :)
