MarshaThis is Marsha. She’s incredibly fierce and keeps picking fights with cats that are four times her size. She likes destroying stuff, anything from bits of string right up to entire pieces of furniture. Apparently Marsha means ‘Dedicated to Mars, the God Of War’, so she’s aptly named.

She does look so fierce! Like a lion or other large wild cat. My Gracie is a dilute Calico and she definitely rules the roost. What is it about being tri-colored that gives a cat attitude? Must be that they feel superior to all the poor mono and bi-colored cats out there!

    Go get ‘em pretty Marsha!

I grew up with a “difficult” calico. My mom named her “Precious”—-oh, the irony. And my neighbors have a temperamental calico. I didn’t realize that calicoes had that reputation. But,–I don’t know what this says about me–I LOVE snotty cats! So much character. I want to squish them even more .

    I thought this was funny….
    *The Cat Test*
The following is a list of 20 questions pertinent to cats. Please read, and mark the answer you would reply on a piece of paper. THEN, when You finish the 20 questions, check the scoring “rules,” and see which type of person you are, and which category you fall into! (No cheating and looking ahead… 1 question at a time)
    1. Your cat sits in front of you and looks lovingly in your eyes. Is it saying:
    a) I adore you

    2. Your cat bumps his head against yours. Is it saying:

    b) I had a little extra pee I didn’t know what to do with

    c) I am having seizures from lack of tuna. Feed me!

    20. Your cat is sound asleep in the window. It is thinking:
    a) Nothing, he’s sleeping
    b) Ah, this sun feels good
    c) Can’t you tell I’ve fainted from hunger??! Feed me!

    Score:
Mostly a : You are your cat’s slave
Mostly b : You are onto your cat’s ways
Mostly c : Give your cat the car keys and let him go buy his own tuna!

And judging by the description, she’s just like the little calico I had to give away last year, Harley. (She used to pick on my big cat, and he’d proceed to sit on her head. >.< )

Dee, my answers were all c’s based on how Domino was. I tried giving both he and Taffy treats at the same time. Domino would swallow his whole never tasting them. Taffy would chew his slowly so slowly in fact he would only eat one and Domino would polish the rest of them off. I had to give them treats in separate rooms after the first few times.

Calicos are the best. Ours was Cissy White Paws and there was never such a fierce and loving cat. She helped me raise the children and sucked on their ears, had her own travel case for the airlines under the seat baggage (you could do that back then.) and live with her person until she died at 19. Never again will I have a calico like our CWP because there will never be another Cissy. Marsha looks close though! ;-)

Does anyone in the community live in Wisconsin?
What a caring and progressive alderman.

    Sep 3, 6:57 AM EDT
*Rescuers to carry oxygen masks for pets*

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — Pets here will be breathing a little easier now that local rescuers will be carrying oxygen masks designed for animals.

Six Appleton fire trucks and 13 ambulances will be equipped with masks intended for use on dogs, cats and other small animals.

Alderman Richard Thompson initiated the program after he saw a newspaper photograph of a firefighter in Superior giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a cat rescued from a house fire.

“A pet is family to most people,” he said. “I know I wouldn’t want to lose Maggie, my collie, or Lucy, my Tabby cat, to a fire, carbon monoxide poisoning or Lord knows what else.”

The money to pay for each $49 mask came from donations by local animal lovers.

“It was something to see,” Thompson said. “There was no organized solicitation effort. People and community groups just read or heard about the program and stepped up to the plate.”

The masks, which come in three sizes, will be distributed to each of six fire stations and to the Appleton Police Department K-9 unit, he said.

The Madison Fire Department carries similar masks on its seven ambulances, said Lori Wirth, the department’s community education officer.

The Madison department also bought its masks with money raised from unsolicited donations, she said. In fact, the department raised so much money it was able to buy mask kits for several neighboring communities.

Wirth said the department’s firefighters haven’t had to use the masks yet but they’re trained and willing.

“What we’ve done so far is use the masks as a way to remind people to get out of their residence in the event of a fire and don’t go searching for pets,” she said. “Firefighters will care for any pets we find in the event they suffer from smoke inhalation.”

WOW, If only every community had leaders that caring. Unfortunately my boy kitty is so scared of strangers he would probably run back into danger rather than let a stranger near him. Gracie the Calico, on the other hand would want to man a hose and ladder AND direct the rescue efforts for the other two.

How cute! My cat used to be really destructive, too, until she had a litter of kittens. Then she calmed down a lot and is a really nice house cat. Hope Marsha works out for you, too! :)

I’ve known calicos who are happiest when they are solitary cats. Anybody else have that experience?
