Right! Usually on the Blue-Eyed side - I have one named Chablis who is not deaf, actually, but is hard-of-hearing on her blue-eyed side. A friend of mine had a white kitten with 2 blue eyes, and he was totally deaf. Needless to say, he was an indoor-only kitty.

Now that’s news to me. . .I always knew a blue-eyed white cat was very likely to be deaf. Also that a blue-eyed white cat with even one black or colored hair would *not* be deaf. I haven’t heard before that the deafness can present only on the blue-eyed side. One way or the other, I’d check the kitten.

AND one way or the other. . .what a lovely little darling! Delicate little porcelain-pink foot pads! Little pink nose! Perfect little white teeth! Petal-thin pink ears you can see light through in a sunny window–every little vein will show up! I’ve read that white kitties are susceptible to sun-related skin cancer, even from exposure through a window screen, so if your little one likes to catch the rays, ask your vet about sunblocker for that little nose and those ears.

    I love white kitties–I have one too. Her name is Akasha–Sanskrit for “spirit”–and she’s about 16 1/2.

I had a white cat called Bianca several years ago. We only had her for 2 years until the cancer on her ears and face got so bad she had to go to sleep. Do be careful with them. We put zinc on her twice a day, but she always got it off asap. Maybe you’ll have more luck if the weather isn’t as hot there? Pretty sunny in Sydney, Aust and she loved sunbaking. They are beautiful, but i’ll never keep another white faced cat in this environment.

eeee! I love his pink feetsies!

Alannakitty, actually odd-eyed whites are less likely to be deaf than blue-eyed whites. Also, the problem is more likely in purebred cats with a limited gene pool; mixed breed cats are less likely to be deaf even with blue eyes, though it can still be a concern. :-)

none of my cats have ever had problems with hairballs. I’ve had about 10 over the years (I’m 26 with 2 now) and I’ve NEVER seen any cat with hairballs….they shed like crazy though…….all my cats have eaten whatever they wanted (barring things like lily flowers and leaves), I’ve always thought they’d pretty much know what they should be eating and it’s don ok so far. Not to say that I don’t look after my fuzzes or that bad things haven’t happened, but if you keep them away from kitty junk food (whiska’s crunchies, etc), they seem to do fine.

kristen, has your kitty had all her shots? it may seem like a dumb question but i know you had a hard time getting close to her at first. cats do not generally get colds like people do, it is more likely to be something serious. please talk to your parents and tell them this. hope i am wrong and she gets well quickly :)

I know you don’t really want to hear this but you need to get your parents to get your kittie to the vet. A round of antibiotics now will save you a lot later. Give your kittie a big hug from my two and I hope you will keep updating us. :)

    Kristen—

Have you asked your parents to take you’re cats to the vet? Just asking… they may surprise you and take Izzy and Cuddles without much of a fight.
When kitties are sick they don’t eat or drink enough because they can’t smell. Make sure they are eating and drinking by opening they smelliest food (like tuna or baby food). If you notice that they aren’t drinking enough water, you can drain some tuna water into kitty’s water dish also. Make sure they stay warm. I always leave out an extra quilt. I try to bunch it up so he can snuggle in if he wants. You may even want to call the vet and explain the symtoms. Explain the situation and I’m sure they can give you more tips on what to do to make your cats more comfortable. I hope both of your fur babies get better soon.

Kristen, everyone is right. You need to get your kitten to the vet. She needs some antibiotics and possibly some eye medicine. My cats have had something similar and my vet gave me some antibiotics. It wouldn’t hurt to take a tissue or soft rag and wipe her eyes off daily, if possible. If her eyes seem to stick together, use a soft rag soaked in slightly warm water and hold it against her eye for a few moments to loosen them. It can lead to build up of fluid if they stay stuck together and could cause eye loss. If your parents can’t take you, do you have a friend that drives? I hope your kitties get to feeling better. Keep us posted.

What a sweetie pete. He looks like he’s giggling.

Change of subject and this question goes out to all you TDK’ers because I don’t have any other resource for general cat info. Jasper’s my first cat so I don’t know their habits very well - is it unusual that she loves salsa and other tomato sauces? She has been known to sneak onto the table - a typical no-no that she understands usually - to slurp up the salsa. It appears she particularly likes the tomato and onion chunks (not so much the peppers). I don’t want to give her salsa if it’s going to make her sick but jeepers I can barely keep her out of my face when I’m snacking!

The tomatoes are fine for cats. My late Siamese LOVED spaghetti sauce, Chili, and HOT salsa. I always took out the onion chunks because I am allergic to onions though. When my late Maine Coon got very sick, the vet warned me that if I tried him on baby food to make sure there was no onion or garlic powder in it because it can be toxic to cats. It can break down their red blood cells and cause a form of anemia. Here is a link to an article I found about the subject.
    http://cats.about.com/cs/catfood/a/humanfood.htm

Stuart is a sweetie. I have been away from my computer since Friday and it has taken me all day to catch up on the postings.

Well I read further in the article and they recommended against Tomatoes too. Don’t know if it only applies to raw ones though. They never seemed to hurt Clueless the cat though. I recommend that everyone link to the article as it mentions several more foods that are bad for pets.

my cats, different ones over the years, have always eaten whatever of my food they felt like. Onion and garic never seemed to effect them at all……one of my cats favourite food is baked pumpkin, skin and all! One of the ones I have living with me at the moment wants anything I’m eating (especially pizza) and the other one loves toast. Of course all Aussies know that all cats LOVE vegemite toast. All of them.

It’s probably an issue of the human foods your cat eats being okay in moderation or small quantities. I know small amounts of garlic are recommended by some people against fleas, and dogs tend to like the taste, though I haven’t noticed our cats being interested. Also some animals react more strongly than others — for example chocolate is toxic to dogs, and when I was a kid our dog had a seizure after getting a halloween candy bar (she was fine, luckily!) but my grandparents’ dog once stole five Easter baskets worth of chocolate and didn’t show any symptoms.

Your cat that loves baked pumpkin probably has no trouble with hairballs, right? I have heard it recommended highly as a healthy fiber source for dogs and cats, so that’s one treat you can keep giving without worry!

ive got a rescued cat who, quite often catches cold. when her eyes looks sort of semi closed,or gooky, i rinse them with a contact solution sample bottle ( one that is for disinfecting contact lenses, yet it ok to use in eyes) and i find that it works as quickly as antibiotics. quicker and better actually………….

We think Stuart is adorable as well… and we have a white cat in the woods watching our house. We’se wondering if this pretty white kitty is looking for a home… so we keep watching. About TOMATOES…our Misha is very old (sorry Mish-y but it’s true) and doesn’t eat very much, and our VET said give Misha tomato sauce (he said other things too), but Misha has no interest in tomato sauce at all. We’se intrigued that so many Kitty people think tomatoes are either very good, or poison. What’s the verdict… on tomatoes…

    Note to Kristen …..
there is this powder stuff called boric acid you can get it at any drug store(pharmacy) and when it’s diluted really well with water, about a teaspoon of the powder to a quart of water, you can use this to gently wash your kitty’s eyes. My mom used to use it for out kits when I was growing up, and I use it myself whenever I get a stye, it works great.
