NikiThis is my bengal kitten, Niki, at about four months, in a rare moment of peace. She can be a handful at times but is much loved. She is seven months old now and has a full set of whiskers.

    Brandi–
Perhaps you can shed some light on the topic—aren’t bengals relatively rare? I’ve heard their bloodline is very specific—can you inform us?

Dee- I have a bengal kitty myself, and they are becoming more and more common. the bengal breed is made by crossing an Asian Leopard cat and a domestic kitty (usually Egyptian Mau or Siamese). It takes several generations to make them tame enough to be housepets, and even then it can be debatable! they are wonderful, ACTIVE cats, who love to run and jump and climb, and they usually love water, too. if you’re thinking of getting one, be prepared! they are a handful.

and that is a gorgeous kitty!

    Hi Dee :)
They are not so much rare as just a very specific breed…..I am a breeder of said cat and they are indeed very different than our domestic fuzz, they are rated by degrees, as in a f1 is very wild and you need a specific permit to own one, what i have are f7 that have been breed down to to make them domestically livable :) a F1 would be a asian lepard CAT which would be just like having a minature lepard in your house LOL……….the f7 still have enough spirit I call it to be very interesting, they get into EVERYTHING and are very very smart, they are intensly loyal, and bond with thier owner …they have a tendency to have a pack mentality and stick together, my other cats non bengal have to learn to adapt……..they LOVE water and I have one or two in the bathtub a week, they will get into the shower, and will sit and play in the water bowl for hours………..they climb and can jump amazing distances, Our palatal window in the entry way in the hous is at least 12 ft up they can jump up its scary to watch………they are affectionate and play fetch…….honest hours of fetch……….some of my cats i admit will not tolerate being held or snuggled, and it is a must that they be fixed or they really go to the wild side……….i have one that is a dominate male while out with the others but when he comes in the bedroomwith me is a bowl of jello,,,,,,these things we accept….I love my himalayans, I love my black short hair, I love my rescued long haired with a passion as he is soooo sweet, but the Bengals are a lifetime love affair that you can only get one to know………PS i have kittens LOL

Great news! Ben and Jerry’s is adopting a cage-free egg policy for the eggs it uses in its ice cream! It’s a company that has stood for humane practices since its inception, so it’s great that it is announcing this transition. If you go to the link below, you can e-mail Ben and Jerry’s a quick thank you.
They have been very responsive to the e-mails I’ve sent them.
See, we all CAN make a difference!

I know Halloween is a few weeks away, but here is a great cat template to use for your pumpkin. Since I’m not a good pumpkin carver, I’m going to use it to top a chocolate cake—by sprinkling powdered sugar (or coconut?) over the template.

Its amazing how many pure breds end up in shelters or on the streets too. Christmas of ‘89 my friend found a little striped kitten in a snowbank on the sidewalk of a very busy city street. I picked him up from her to take him to a no kill shelter and before I got a mile down the road I HAD to keep him. He turned out to be a maine coon cat. My vet said he had every breed characteristic and there was no indication he was a mix. Of my current three fuzz babies one is a Balinese. He was born in the shelter of a pure bred mother.

Lets not snark on each other for adoption choices. There’s room for variety.

    ppearson—
I’ve always heard that 25 per cent of the dogs in shelters are purebred—I wonder if the numbers are similar with cats.
As far as keeping your cat that you intended to take to the no-kill shelter—-that’s how I got my 3! None of them made it to the shelter. That’s why I’m afraid to baby-sit the babies of any friends—haha.

Brandi Lee, I think you should just try and ignore the ignorant people who don’t know you. I agree with you about loving every cat and taking them all in. I’m actually like that with most animals…if I could, I’d have a zoo in my apartment. Just remember, the regular crew here supports you for who you are.
Chester, what happened before? I saw a post for Minou and you weren’t very happy. Like Brandi Lee said, don’t let anyone have enough power to bring you down. (Great advise, but I may need a pick me up sometime soon. Hope you’ll be there for me, too.)

My, my Niki, but aren’t you just a beautiful little girl? Such a sweet expression on your little face. I’d love to smother you with hugs and kisses.

Niki is simply the best looking kitten I’ve seen in a long, long time. Keep up the good work with this breed. I have 2 different breeds, one of which was a resuce, and the other adopted us. My others were resuced from the veterinarian’s office where I worked. (I’ve 5 cats and 1 dog). All were spayed or neutered. Our cats have so much energy that they really make the dog seem lazy at times. He washes the cats and they wash him too. Cats and dogs DO get along and will even sleep together at times.

    Niki is beautiful!

To the person talking about unnecessary purebred cats, I see your point, but I think the real problem is people letting their cats have unplanned litters, not what kind of cats they are . . . We did a little soul-searching when we decided on a purebred dog, but the fact was we wanted to know what kind of personality and characteristics we were in for, and a purebred was the perfect way to arrange that. (We couldn’t possibly be happier with our rat terrier, BTW!)

If all us cat owners would take full responsibility by either spaying our cats (first choice!), or having responsibly-planned litters with homes lined up (and the obligation to re-home or keep any kitten produced, so it NEVER ends up in a shelter), I think there is room for purebred cats in the world, and I’d hate to see those lines die out. Personally I don’t see a huge distinction between many of the cat breeds, so a pound rescue with some of the traits I’m looking for is my first choice (both my cats are mixed-breed rescues) but I would love to have a Cornish Rex someday, and you just can’t get a cat like that by accident!

I’d have to agree that being responsible is key. But I’m still a bigger fan of adopting from a shelther than buying in a store. It’s just more economical, and I don’t have to worry about that I’m helping support a kitty mill. My dad instilled a healthy fear of those in me.

I hope y’all will keep a friend of mine in your prayers. Her house burned down on the weekend, and she and her husband lost everything — and their dogs and cats, who were trapped inside. She has such a big heart for animals, and I know the losses are just tearing her up inside.

To Lynn how asked if yoy have to keep Bengals indoors; Yes. Unless you’re really lucky and have a good friend who breeds them, they can cost between $250-1500. They look so exotic-they are stolen 9 times out of 10 - that is if they can catch them. But unfortunely, they are a handful, I have 2, and once in awhile they do turn up at shelters.
