Hurray Gov. Rendell of Pennsylvania!

*ASPCA Applauds Gov. Rendell’s Proactive Steps to Improve Animal Welfare in Pennsylvania*

NEW YORK, October 17, 2006—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today applauded Gov. Rendell’s proactive steps to overhaul animal welfare conditions in Pennsylvania, including his appointment of two key officials in specially-created positions, as well as his proposed regulatory and legislative changes to the existing Dog Law.

“The ASPCA has been working with Governor Rendell and his staff in an advisory capacity for some time now to revamp animal welfare conditions in the state of Pennsylvania,” said ASPCA President Ed Sayres. “We have been impressed by the Governor’s obvious commitment to animal welfare and to improving conditions in state-licensed kennels, which have been operating in open violation of the existing Dog Law. Both the appointments and proposed changes announced by the Governor today are an important first step in making Pennsylvania a humane community we can all be proud of, and will directly impact the quality of life of dogs all over the state.”

The ASPCA welcomed the Governor’s appointment of Jessie L. Smith to be the Special Deputy Secretary for Dog Law Enforcement, and Jeffrey Paladina to be the new Special Prosecutor for Dog Law Enforcement. Ms. Smith was formerly Chief of the Torts Litigation Section in the Office of Attorney General, and is also the former President of the Board of the Directors of the Humane Society of Harrisburg. In addition to noting the importance of these positions, the ASPCA also congratulated the Governor on the 16 new appointees to the Pennsylvania Dog Law Advisory Board.

As a member of the Governor’s appointed ad hoc committee to review the state of the Dog Law, the ASPCA made several recommendations to the Governor earlier this year, including the replacement of key officials on the Dog Law Advisory Board and Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement.

“Governor Rendell’s decisive actions are a great example for other lawmakers who are trying to improve animal welfare conditions in their states and communities,” said Bob Baker, a consultant to the ASPCA on anti-cruelty and animal welfare issues. “The Governor’s decision to infuse change from the top down is a critical step forward in improving the quality of life for these animals.”

Investigations conducted by the ASPCA and others in recent years consistently revealed state licensed kennels operating in open violation of the Dog Law throughout Pennsylvania. The breeding dogs housed in these licensed facilities often were suffering from inadequate shelter, filthy and unsanitary living conditions, overcrowding, insufficient food and water, and lack of veterinary care. More recently, these deplorable conditions have also been exposed by numerous media sources, resulting in increased calls for change from concerned citizens and animal welfare organizations.

Just got to read this….and yes “Thank you” I grew up in Penna. and can remember when Rendell was mayor of Phila. It says good things about a man when he not only loves animals, but does not think that he’s gotten too high and mighty to still do good works.

*All I Need To Know About Birthdays,
I Learned From My Cat*

Be finicky - they’ll try harder to please you.

Give attitude - get attention.

If you don’t like your presents, SULK.

If you get bored at your party - just curl up for a nap.

Don’t stress out over your first grey whisker.

Act completely unimpressed by the presents you receive.

Remember, this is your day, so if anyone bugs you, you’re allowed to hiss and spit.

Take the day off and lie in the sun.

Stay out on the prowl all night long.

Demand only the most expensive fresh fish for dinner.

It’s a good day to shed your inhibitions.

Act catty - toy with your presents before you tear them open.

Don’t overdo it with the catnip or you’ll regret it in the morning.

If you aren’t getting enough attention, sharpen your claws on somebody’s leg.

Don’t let anything or anyone PUT YOU OUT!

And remember… curiosity might kill you, but birthdays won’t!

bad joke, coming up…

A tom cat and a tabby cat were courting on a back fence at night.
The tom leaned over to the tabby with pent up passion and purred “I’ll die for you!”

The tabby gazed at him from under lowered eye lids and asked:

“How many times?”

As a retired breeder of Maine Coons…I know about loving and keeping the ones with problems. My Roo — from my Riverboat Gambler litter, Casino Bello (girl) Aces High (boy), Dueces Wild (boy), and Roulette (boy) aka Roo — had to have a leg amputated when he was a kitten, he’s my tripod and I love him dearly! I have another girl, Phoebe, that was just sickly and small from birth and now she is my mini Maine Coon, I call “itters” or ” itty-bitty). She is very small for a Maine Coon, but is healthy now and very very spoiled!

Here is my weird question of the day: Do your cats or dogs look at you inquisitively when something about you is different? For instance, when I wrap a towel around my head after washing my hair, the way my cats approach me always reminds me of the ape and monolith scene from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey! And I grew up with a lab mix who would run away from me when I would give myself a facial with a mud mask! Classic! Does anyone have similar stories?

Absolutly, I have a cap with eyes on it and every time I wore it around my dog he would bark at me when my head was down. It was right out of that Bugs Bunny cartoon with the fox mask. Head up, wagging tail, head down, barking. I think its hysterical!

Two of my cats arched their backs and hissed at me when I came out of the bathroom with a blue clay facial mask on. The rest watched me warily! Such funny creatures!

I found a plastic alligator that someone had left at my house as part of a Halloween costume from a couple of years ago. Bunny (3 year old female Maine Coon), is absolutely horrified of it. I left it on the hall floor by the bathroom door as a joke on a friend, and she spied it and literally jumped up and bounced off the hallway walls NEVER touching the floor. she wouldn’t come down the hall for a month after that without puffing up and doing the cautious creep… None of my other cats blinked an eye.

Comment by Dee from Tampa
2006-10-20 14:36:41

Both those stories are hysterical! They really can be scaredy-cats! Last week, while I was petting my little cat, Emily, she heard the weed-whacker guy outside the window (the lawn guys had just arrived), and she JUMPED off of me so fast that she gouged her claws into the palm of my hand! After I screamed in pain, I cracked up. They make me laugh every day.

I’m sharing the e-mail I received today from PetSmart in reference to the e-mail I sent them about their veterinary partner, Banfield, performing declawing. They make some good points; however, I still believe that people who will only have a cat if it is declawed, should choose another pet.
——————————–
Dear Dee,
Thank you for sharing your concerns about the optional cat declaw
surgery that our in-store veterinary partner, Banfield, The Pet
Hospital, has recently added to its Wellness Plan. We understand that
declaw surgery can be an emotional and sensitive topic and we can
appreciate this.

While Banfield is under separate control and operates under its own
management, it is an important partner in our mission to provide pets
with Total Lifetime Care, and we both consider pets to be members of
the
family. Banfield has offered declawing for some time but has only
recently added it as an option within its preventative pet health plan,
which offers an unlimited number of office visits and reduced costs on
preventative procedures.

Unfortunately, destructive behavior is one of the prime reasons why
people surrender their cats to humane shelters, and is cited as one of
the main reasons for euthanasia. While PetSmart and Banfield strongly
believe and encourage all other options for dealing with destructive
behavior in cats should be thoroughly explored and exhausted prior to
the decision to declaw, we believe it to be preferable to surrender,
abandonment or euthanasia.

When performed in a safe and effective manner, adhering to careful
surgical and post-surgical protocols, recovery from surgery is usually
rapid. In the end, the decision to declaw is an individual, personal
decision that should be well informed and considered only as a last
resort. We thank you again for sharing your concerns. If you have
additional questions, I encourage you to contact Banfield Customer
Service by phone at 1-800-838-6738 or email at
internet.inquiries@banfield.net or talk with your local veterinarian.

Sincerely,
PetSmart Corporate Communications

I have 3 kitties and they are all declawed. None of them spent more than 2 days at the vet and then I followed all the instructions when I took them home and none of them ever had a problem.

It’s a personal thing with me, as I don’t want them to scratch me or tear things up (even though my baby can shred the HELL out of a roll of paper towels with his teeth - lol). All of them are very playful (even my 17 year old) and they could probably tear me up if they still had their claws.

I’d like to point out though, that all of my cats are inside cats and will never be outdoors (they run away if you even open the front door).

When I was little I lived out in the country and we had ‘barn cats’ and would never have dreamed of having their claws taken off, they needed them.

But my indoor babies do just fine without them.

My niece’s cat has the little caps you put on the claws that you get from the vet. They work just fine, but her cat scratches the crap out of her when she tries to put them on. :)

Huddy’s Mama

p.s. - Thanks for all the cool stories that you post.
