I probably looked at a dozen cats in sinks to get over being sad that my morning kitten was missing! But my oldest cat was once someone’s missing kitten - at the HS he didn’t seem like he’d been stray very long. I hope this little sweetie found a good home too.

hope this helps in your loss - we found a cat living under our storged building i could tell he had been someones pet cause he had no front claws - poor baby just got out & lost, i started feeding him, won his trust took him to the vet then introduced him into my zoo (home) lol and he has stolen our hearts, cuddles with us all the time & never far behind us. I think about the people who lost this awesome cat all the time, but he is well cared for & loved to the max - I’m sure this has happen to Rothy just look at that face :-)

Jane, I doubt your comment was very welcome. I sincerely doubt that today’s kitten parent tossed the cat outside carelessly, and just went about (his) her day. You imply that (s)he didn’t try- and I’m sure (s)he did. Now you’re just making it worse by tossing around guilt after the fact.
I hope whoever was Rothy’s parent has gotten closure and now has another cat that he or she takes great care of.

May the happy memories outweigh the pain of losing your little one. We never really get over losing them. The pain never goes away, it just becomes a little dull and distant. Remember that they were loved by you and you by them. You will see them again.

Wow, how sad. Poor, sweet kitty.
I consider myself a compassionate person but I can’t help but wonder how do you lose a kitten? Would you all be as understanding if his mom had lost one of her human children? Kittens are like children you have to take special care and make sure they aren’t able to run out.
Sorry but I feel very strongly about our responsibilities for all life.
Hope Rothy was found by some loving people but let’s face it, odds are he didn’t it. :(

First, please don’t worry about my karma
Second I live in a big city, hardly a natural habitat for kitties. Furthermore to whoever said that Rothy was not a kitten when he was lost. What difference does that make? No matter what age, their mental capabilities are never beyond that of a very small child.
It is a proven fact that indoor cats live longer healthier lives. And yes, HAPPY lives.

If you read the comments, Rothy went missing when he was over two years old, so you can hardly blame the owner for not keeping an eye on a kitten.

It’s sad when it happens, but sometimes cats do wander off and never come back. Hopefully someone else has given him a good home :)

Hi everyone - I’ve never owned a cat, but my girlfriend has three, and I’m really getting attached to them. Well, better late than never! :-) I’ve been lurking round this site for a while, and it always brightens my day.

Anyway, I’m with Celia here. Rothy was no longer a kitten, but a two-and-a-half year old *adult* cat when he went missing. It seems cruel to keep healthy animals imprisoned indoors, and life outdoors is never risk-free for any of us! What a gorgeous kitten he was, and I hope he had, or is having, a happy life. I’m sure the owner did their best for him.

    Paul,
your comment disturbed me, it is healthy to keep your cats indoors there are a lot of factors that are very dangerous, for instance other wild animals in the nieborhood, as in ferrel cats, foxes, raccons, and even large vultures ……..I although have built a cat room outside in my backyard were they can smell the air and eat grass…………

Yes, it’s hard to keep a cat inside when we all know how much fun and adventure is outside. I have almost lost count of how many animals were killed by coyotes, neighbor dogs, other cats, people, cars, before I wised up. It took me years to realize that I had better sense than my cats (if I used it) so now I’m “cruel” and keep my pets indoors. Did you realize that the average outside cat lives no longer than 2 years (and dies a nasty death), versus many more for the inside cat?
I feel for Rothy’s owner - I have been through this many times. Hopefully no more.

Cats can benefit from spending time in outdoor enclosures, on the balcony, patio or in the backyard. They get to breathe the fresh air, chase bugs, run and lounge, just like outdoor cats but safter. There are websites that give cage ideas for all price points!

To make the comment that poor little Rothy “went missing” is putting the blame on the kitty. Shame on the owner for letting the kitty wander. In Texas, it is against the law for a cat to be unleashed, unvaccinated, uncared for and left to wander and go “missing”. I don’t understand how Rothy’s owner (or abuser, if I may) even bothers to post a supposedly beloved kitty on this site. Take some responsibility for these beloved creatures people!!!

As the mother of a cat who will try anything to bolt out the door every time I come home from work, I feel a lot of sympathy for Rothy’s owners. I adore my little April, and she is an indoor kitty. I would go insane if she ever got lost. However, cats have an incredible ability to squeeze through the smallest spaces, climb up trees, jump over fences, etc. as any person who’s ever had to chase a cat outside knows.

I hope Rothy’s owners have found closure. A kitty so beautiful and sweet probably found a nice person to take him in.

I have to agree. When a cat decides that it wants out it will get out. Has anyone ever tried to keep a cat from running out the door while carrying a full load of groceries? The thing most people love about cats is their sense of independence, and some cats are more independent than others.

Our cat has pulled an entire screen, frame and all, out of the (second-storey) window, jumped out past the dogs, and tried to bolt down the driveway (almost under the wheels of our car, as we were NOT expecting the cat to be outside). She also tries her darnedest to bolt out between your legs every time someone opens the front door.

We have been very lucky: on the occasions Tatters has succeeded in escaping, she hasn’t gotten too far before we’ve caught her, but cats do have an instinctively wild streak, and keeping hold of them can be very difficult. I can only imagine how heartbreaking it must be if the cat succeeds in getting away (and, in all probability, subsequently claimed, hit by a car, mauled by another cat or feral animal). There’s no need to assume the worst of the owners.

The law in Texas states that in the city limits you must have tags on your cats…nothing about them not going outside. If you were a true Christian you would have some empathy for their loss and not be so judgemental.

You need to read the law again. In Texas, they must be on a leash and not free to wander!!!!!!! I know, because I helped to get this law enacted!!! It’s also the issue of overpopulation of cats (and dogs). I suppose you believe it’s better just to disregard and subsequently have the cat suffer a tortuous death from sadistic humans, be run over by a car left to suffer until death or simply euthanize the “problem”. If you truly love cats, you’d agree that these creatures that we are supposed to be responsible for should be given the same love, attention, and guardianship as a child. A true Christian would know that the word “anima” means “soul”. Just because a cat is not a human animal, they still have more soul than some of the people that have posted such remarks about cats just slipping out the door with an “oh well” attitude. It is the responsibility that comes along with loving an animal to do whatever necessary to protect in anyway your “beloved” pet as you would your child. We are all God’s creations and deserve the same love, compassion and it is our duty as humans to use our brains to provide a solution. Certainly, unfortunate events happen, but to be so flippant about “losing” an animal is the slippery slope to inhumanity for anyone who becomes an inconvenience. I’ve had many cats, dogs, hamsters and other pets and not one has ever (fortunately) slipped out because of my concern, love and watchfulness of the creatures that I love.

i just want to say that to all the people who are calling Rothy’s owner irresponsible, abusive and all the words that you can think of: if you know how to read; you’ll see that they moved and when cats are in a place that they call home then they are moved, sometimes they go to the place they first came home to. i should know; 2 years ago i moved and i took my at the time 11 year old cat Maxine from the only home she knew (she was born in the basement) and she got out of the house in the middle of our move. i miss Maxie terribly and yes i feel very guilty as some of you would say i should but please remember that as we all know cats know how to escape at anytime as Maxie had over the years, so know that this could happen you too.

    Good grief…
As the owner of a door bolting, fiendishly fast kitty, you not only have my sympathy for loosing your loved one, but for the sheer cattiness, non-empathic posters.
It’s easier to loose a kitty to the great outdoors than you think, people. Our beloved Absinthe has gotten outside three times. He is a very fast, slim little bugger that darts out the *second* you take your eyes off him. And if he does get out, forget chasing him. He’ll just run faster, it’s a game for him!! We have been lucky, and found him two times, and paid for his return the third.
We have to close ALL doors as soon as we open them. No keeping an eye on him while you get the groceries, no quick nip out to grab that birdfeeder, nada. Forget screendoors, he’ll tear those right up to get out. And yes, he is neutered.
Needless to say, he is microchipped and has a collar with a bell.
All this, and he has still escaped. So, please show a little mercy and compassion. Sometimes you do your best, and it’s still not good enough. I assure you, they have enough guilt and anxiety about loosing their little baby as it is, without people telling them what a wretched human they are.

Wow, I have lurked on DK for a long time–my darling Spudnut was even posted in July. I keep my cat inside. That’s my choice based on what I’ve read and my level of comfort. I have friends with cats who let them roam near home. I don’t judge them. Sometimes I wish I could let Spud play outside. Nevertheless, last Sunday I came home and couldn’t find my cat. I am always extremely careful when I leave because he’s a sneaky one. Anyway, I was hysterical going to all the neighbors and calling for him I came back home briefly to change shoes and who was standing in my living room? You guessed it. He must have found a new hiding place. The grief I know I would feel if Spudnut WENT MISSING would be overwhelming. Imagine if my friends, family and fellow cat lovers assigned blame? Who needs it?

I have the torn-up screens to prove that some cats will do ANYTHING to get outside. All of my cats are fixed, but a few of them go totally insane if they are not let out to make the rounds of the cul de sac and mark the yard. My cat Tristan has been known to hide under the dining room table and then barrel over the person coming in or going out the front door–he has actually tripped me at times and has knocked children over. Also, he refuses to wear a collar, it is always off and missing within a week. He is microchipped as are all of my cats. The microchip is a wonderful thing–if your cat ends up in a shelter in Toledo you will get him back! I have taken in many stray cats over the years, so it is entirely possible that sweet Rothy was one of the lucky ones and is snoozing by the fire as we speak. Right now my sweet kitty 120 is purring by my keyboard–my ex-husband grabbed him from the middle of a highway (120-hence his name) and we adopted him. I assume he was lost from a home since he was so sweet and tame from the beginning. We left info at the local animal control and no one came looking, but they may not have known to call there. Oh–and years ago we went away for a long weekend and a neighbor was feeding my cats, and when we got home one kitten was missing. Two years later I spotted her down the street at a neighbor’s house wearing a collar! I know it was her because of her six toes on her front feet. There are a lot of kitty lovers and stray adopters out there. No need to assume the worst.

Well, folks, as someone who has lost a total of 2 cats, due to *someone else’s* carelessness, and who also, lost [but found, again] her current feline daughter, I can testify how stealthy our fur-children can be!
And wherever Rothy may be right now, his first human parent feels for him now, at times.

I’m sorry Rothy went missing, he’s a pretty boy. And I’m hoping he found another home where other people love him too.

There seems to be a little skirmish going on here regarding cats wanting to get out. My cats never want to go out, but I have trained them not to. When they were kittens and they would dart out the door, I’d catch them, scruff them and yell NO very loudly. Or maybe it’s the fact that they know they won’t get the spoiling in the outside world that they do in here. :)

When I come in the door they always sit patiently until I put everything down (even groceries) and then once I close the door they come to me for rubs, hugs, etc. I realize that a) I’m very lucky and blessed that they want to stay in and b) they are city cats who know it’s a mean world out there full of crazy strays and scary vehicles.

Please don’t be too hard on Rothy’s owner. I’ve had one cat that knocked out a screen to escape, although now she wouldn’t go outside if I stood there with the door opened and told her to go. One of my other cats, as far as we can figure out, snuck out one night by going downstairs to the basement apartment and, apparently, sneaking past our tenants. Since it was the dead of winter, she at least had enough sense to stay right next to the house. I heard her crying in the middle of the night, and when I brought her inside her fur was freezing cold and her nose was red, but do you think it stopped the little bugger from trying to get out again after that? Some cats just learn their lesson faster than others.

I can totally vouch for you kitty parents that just cannot keep your kitties inside! My little Violet got out one time, and I finally found her…..up a tree!! We tried everything to get her down. She was up that tree for 11 days!! To this day, her tail still shakes when she is sleeping. And she is still curious as ever to go outside. So I can relate to all of you. Im sure Rothy was found and is now living the high life. :)

To Star Christian I say: you’re quite cruel. My first kitten/cat was a bolter, and developed many strategies for trying to get out the door. She managed to get out on a variety of occasions, and I’m just lucky she didn’t go missing. Neither of the two cats I’ve had since has had any real interest in going out. Again, that’s a matter of luck. I didn’t train them, particularly, there was just no interest. To Rothy’s owner, who cared enough to post Rothy’s picture here, I send my heartfelt condolences. I’m sorry this happened to you.

I’ll bet Rothy has grown from a very, very cute kitten to a beautiful cat, and I for one am optimistic enough to believe that he has found a great home with someone who loves and needs him, and don’t take this the wrong way either, I am sure his original owners loved and needed him too, but maybe there was a higher power at work that realized that there was someone out there that needed Rothy more…and to all the posters that have blamed the owners for him escaping….forget it!!! We have one who does exactly what someone else posted and hides under the table just waiting for the door to open to try to make his dash for freedom, sometimes we let him go and give him a few minutes outside and then he’s content for a while, the times that we don’t want him going out we open the door just a crack, enough to get him from under the table, scoop him up, get out the door, toss him back in and shut the door really quick. So yes they do manage to sneak, dash, whatever to get out and if they aren’t missed right away it could be hours before they turn up again. Also the owners could have had someone else pet sitting and that person let him get out and away…so there are all kinds of possibilities as to why he’s missing.
