This is very surprising….I wonder if the US has similar figures…

Tuesday 31 October 2006
*UK Cats In RTAs Every Two Minutes*
New figures released today by pet insurer Petplan indicate that a cat is run over on UK roads every two and a half minutes. According to the company drivers hit 630 cats every day, nearly a quarter of a million in the last year.

Petplan research also indicates that kittens are most at risk with half of all the cats involved in road traffic accidents, (RTA) being aged between seven months and two years old.

The company has produced a free guide for owners to help prevent and deal with cat RTAs.

Feline Accident Black Spots:
Bristol is pinpointed as the UK’s cat accident black spot. The city had the highest number of cat RTAs in the last 12 months. London comes a close second as the most hazardous place for cats. Grimsby and Dundee, says Petplan, are cat heaven having the lowest reported incidents in the last year.

Top Ten Black Spots:
Bristol
London
Swindon
Leeds
Nottingham
Reading
Jersey
Manchester
Cheltenham
Glasgow

Petplan’s research also found 35% of drivers admitted to either hitting or nearly missing a cat and three out of four drivers confessed to having no idea what to do if they were to hit a cat. Almost one in ten Brits felt the best course of action rather than seek professional help, was to stop and apply first aid themselves. While a meaner 13% would leave the cat for dead.

Simon Wheeler, Head of Marketing, Petplan, said:
“The luckier cats that do survive often suffer terrible injuries. Last year our most expensive claim came in at over £10,000 which illustrates just how crucial pet insurance is. It enables pet owners to make life saving decisions when tragedy strikes.”

Petplan paid out over £1million on RTA claims involving cats last year and quotes the average vet bill for treatment of RTAs at around £500.

55% of drivers feel that cat owners should take further steps to look after their animals. 85% of people believe a reflective collar is a good preventative measure to make it safer for cats and drivers on the streets, whilst 64% say keep cats indoors at night.

Petplan’s free guide to cat care is available by calling 0800 316 0207.

I lived in the London suburbs for 4 years (1998-2002) and found out that the Brits don’t know what “housecat” means. I would hope that US statistics for pet vs. car accidents is a LOT less. That country is also losing songbirds in record numbers because cats usually live outdoors.

A much less annoying fact: gardeners like me are irritated by other people’s cats using our gardens as litter boxes, especially because those cats don’t bury their messes!

By the way, my brother and I share our family’s house while I’m househunting with my new fiance, and we’ve just adopted two 1-year old male brother cats from a local shelter to keep Daisy company after I move out.

Daisy was our mom’s cat (Mom passed away in Feb. from cancer), and Daisy is now home alone all day for the first time in her life. She is a tuxedo cat with white smears on her black back, so she looks a lot like the cat from the Pepi LePew cartoons. She was also a rescue cat, but since she’s 5 years old, we didn’t want kittens for her, but we did want black cats because Daisy’s boy Pronto (runt from her first of 2 litters — I had her fixed when I moved back from England!) was black. Pronto passed away a couple days after Mom did, from a broken heart, because Pronto & my mom were each other’s best friend. The vet saw him that morning, and the next day confirmed that Pronto’s heart just stopped.

Sorry this message is so long — so many bad things happened at the beginning of the year (I also lost my job 2 weeks before Mom passed away, but then I had all that time with her), it’s great to finally have so many good things happening.

Thanks for listening!!

:>

*A Kittens Prayer*
Author Unknown

Now I lay me down to sleep
The king-size bed is soft and deep..
I sleep right in the center groove
My human cannot hardly move!

I’ve trapped her legs, she’s tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and”I want food!”

I sneak up slowly to begin
my nibbles on my human’s chin.
She wakes up quickly,
I have sharp teeth-

And my claws I will unsheath
For the morning’s here
and it’s time to play
always seem to get my way.

So thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs me and holds me tight
And sacrifices her bed at night!

That is SO me and my sweet cat Summer, lol! I actually wake up sore some mornings, from sleeping in an odd position because I don’t want to disturb her, lol! She tends to curl up right against my tummy when I’m on my side. And lately she’s been planting herself in the exact middle of the bed, so that when I come out of the shower and get into bed, I have to either lay down diagonally or curl myself around her, lol!

Oh, and Barlowe is ADORABLE! So much fluffiness on such a wee kittykins…..

*Help Wanted*
A local business was looking for office help. They put a sign in the window, stating the following: “HELP WANTED. Must be able to type, must be good with a computer and must be bilingual. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.”

A short time afterwards, a dog trotted up to the window, saw the sign and went inside. He looked at the receptionist and wagged his tail, then walked over to the sign, looked at it and whined.

Getting the idea, the receptionist got the office manager. The office manager looked at the dog and was surprised, to say the least. However, the dog looked determined, so he led
him into the office. Inside, the dog jumped up on the chair and stared at the manager.

The manager said, “I can’t hire you. The sign says you have to be able to type.” The dog jumped down, went to the typewriter and proceeded to type out a perfect letter. He took out the page and trotted over to the manager and gave it to him, then jumped back on the chair. The manager was stunned, but then told the dog, “The sign says you have to be good with a computer.”

The dog jumped down again and went to the computer. The dog proceeded to demonstrate his expertise with various programs and produced a sample spreadsheet and database and presented them to the manager. By this time the manager was totally dumb-founded! He looked at the dog and said, “I realize that you are a very intelligent dog and have some interesting abilities. However, I still can’t give you the job.”

The dog jumped down and went to a copy of the sign and put his paw on the sentences that told about being an Equal Opportunity Employer. The manager said, “Yes, but the sign also says that you have to be bilingual.”

The dog looked at him straight in the face and said, “Meow.”

Furrball fuzz! She makes me miss my little kitty Whiskers who I got when she was just six weeks old. Whiskers was so small that I could hold her in one hand and have room for the tail. She had very little fur on her and no meow. She didn’t develop a meow until almost one year of age. After that sometimes the meow would be just a squeak. She never got bigger than 10 lbs. I miss her so much even though it has been almost two years since she went over the Rainbow Bridge.

This little one makes me want to get another kitten for my one year old cat, Sylvester. I am concerned about if he wants to be an “only” kitty or would like a playmate. I tried adopting a female kitten with him but they never got along and I had to give the female kitten back to the adoption agency (she was destructive too and needed 24/7). I am thinking about another kitty though much to my husband’s dismay. I warned my husband that I love cats and he had said he was okay with it.

Karin–did you notice this link I posted yesterday for people around the world who would like to have a virtual candle lit for their pets who have went over the Rainbow Bridge? You can write a “eulogy” for Whiskers and include her photo, if you’d like. It’s a very beautiful site ran by a very compassionate woman.

http://www.rainbowsbridge.com/hello.htm

As far as getting another playmate for Sylvester, I’d suggest to do it while he is still young. The “breaking-in” period always seems to take longer when they are older and set in their ways. And the product Feliway is great for easing kitty stress of all sorts. You can find it at almost any pet store or their on-line sites.
