Koa Kitty

Koa KittyKoa Kitty was found on the side of a busy highway looking as if contemplating crossing. She was barely a pound and covered with fleas. We took her in and fostered her until she was ready for her new home. Now she is a busy, beautiful and happy kitten, far from the kitten she was on the side of that highway.

I love happy endings.
Koa Kitty is very sweet. I have a weakness for ginger fuzzbutts! I am sure she is bringing lots of laughter and joy to her new family. :))

A female ginger cat? Well, she was worth saving. Don’t know how you could foster, though. I would end up keeping every one! :-)

Ginger females are INDEED rare! My best friend had one named “Gracie”. A real sweet loveable and social little gal. Disappeared. She thinks that Gracie went off in someone’s car. She would jump in our van whenever we came to visit. We hope that’s what it was and not some errant coyote. KEEP YOUR FUZZBUTTS INSIDE!

Yes! Absolutely! Keep them inside because there is NO SAFE WAY anywhere to let pet kitties roam!

That little ginger girl is a beautiful, lucky little kitty. Bless all people who rescue these wonderful dear animals! ! !

Yes, she is special and should be inside. I had a giner tom that was stolen when I tied him outside and went to answer the phone. I saw the people take him, but, I couldn’t run fast enough after the car to get a license number. Never leave them outside alone for a second. Believe me, it is not worth the pain of not knowing if they’ll be mistreated or cared for. I’ve learned a very hard lesson in responsibility at a young age of seven.

Ginger females are not that rare. About 40% of total. I had one, Sandy, for many years.

I had one called Honey. She was great. A guy at work once told me my cat was NOT female, because only toms were ginger (like I didn’t know what sex my cat was). I just agreed and said in that case, it was a ginger tom who’d given birth to 3 kittens.

Not extremely rare, no. However, they are usually far and few between…. NOW, if you can find a MALE CALICO?

I agree with that too! Who in their right mind would do that to a poor kitten. All those nosy cars whizzing by! Put the person in the desert with no food and no water for 30 days and see how they like it.

Awe…Such a cute kitty. And bless you for getting rid of the fleas. I have recently started adopting kittens (3 of them) only to discover that one of them came with fleas, and now they all have them! And nothing I do seems to keep them away for more than a day. :( Bless you for saving this kitten!

Tara, take the “kids” to your vet for check up, etc, he/she will be able to advise you on the proper treatment for fleas on kittens. Please don’t use anything “store bought” as these are usually too toxic for cats and kittens in general, plus they don’t really work but still cause kitties to get sick from them. Treatments bought at the vet’s office are far and away more safe than anything store bought, plus will be the right dosages for their sizes.

Tara, I am sorry that your cats have fleas. My
cats had the same problem two years ago. My
veterinarian recommended FRONTLINE PLUS
for cats. I got a package of 6 treatments
which will last for one month each. Not a flea
since. It is rather expensive at about $75.00
for the package of 6; however, it was well
worth the cost. It is much easier to get
rid of fleas in cold weather. Good luck.

I use a flea wash on my cat. She is odd though cause she likes baths. I bath her once a week. Only thing is she dosnt like the blow dryer so i have to keep her from struggling while im drying her.

Chey, I read somewhere that you should NOT bath cats often because that causes the oils in their skin to dry up and make problems. Try Advantage or Frontline instead.

It’s usually fine to bathe them once a week, just try using a moisturizing shampoo. Unless you notice dryness or flakiness, it should be fine :)

Another one — I have a cat named Koa, too, and thought I had picked a rather unusual name. I picked it because my kitty is extremely anxious and Koa means “courage” in Hawaiian.

What a cutie! Her story brings back sooooo many memories!

The kitty currently snoozing on my shoulder had been abandoned by her mom (a barn cat) at 4 weeks old. The mom’s owners took her in and bottle fed her w/the human baby formula they had on hand. She was not doing well, and they asked us to take her, because they had a pair of human 2 year olds, who were enough work at the time.

When we brought her to the vet, she had 2 types of worms and was crawling w/fleas. She weighed 4 oz. The vet muttered all sorts of things about how she should be with her mom (like we could do anything about that), but eventually got her bathed, treated for the worms, and gave us all the paraphernalia to feed her properly.

We called her our Half Cup O’ Kitty. For the first few days, she often slept in my husband’s shirt pocket (she was that tiny). I worked from home for the next 2 weeks, keeping her wrapped snug and warm in a blanket on my lap, and feeding her from a bottle every 30 minutes.

She improved day by day, and eventually did become a strong healthy kitty. She’s still going strong 14 years later!

We also have a stray from a gas station at the off-ramp of a major highway, where it intersects one of the busiest roads in the Northeast. He had been there for 2 days when I stopped for gas late one night. I asked the station owner if it was the station’s kitten, but he said no, and asked me to please take him, because he didn’t want the poor thing to be run over. The owner had put a bowl of milk out for him, but the little sweetie totally refused to come into the store. I went over toward him, slowly, and just sat down nearby until he was willing to come close enough for me to catch him, then brought him home. Since we didn’t know exactly how he got to the station, we called all the local vets and put up some signs. We had named him Visitor, so the kids wouldn’t get too attached if he had to go away, but no one ever claimed him. So Vizzie is still with us. He never became an indoor cat. I wonder if he had been either feral or a barn kitten before he found his way to the gas station. He is very aloof with most people, and would rather be outside or in the neighbor’s barn than anywhere else. But on those rare occasions when he’s in the right mood, he is the cutest, sweetest little snuggle bunny of a cat you could ever imagine.
