Luci

LuciThis is Luci when she was 6 weeks old, she is now 8 months old. Since this picture, she has doubled in size and beats up her older and more laid back brother Charlie *Circlebutt*. Even though she is a terror around the house, she is such a lover! Every morning she crawls into bed with me and her daddy and cuddles us until we wake up to feed her! Life wouldn’t be the same without our furry orange creamsicle kitty… she is very loved and spoiled and she knows it!

Thank you ppearson. You and eveyone on daily kitten have a very Happy Thankgiving too.

I’m thankfull for my fuzzy faced kids too, Bicardi, Alex, Tecumseh, Hoover and Sheman. Alex as always was right there early Sunday morning when I needed him. Was on line in clubpogo playing gin rummy with an online friend. Went to an Ohio/Michigan football party Saturday. While chatting to my online friend remembered that my Mom who died last April after 17 years with Alzheimer’s, while not a sports fan, always watched the Ohio/Michigan game and the Rose Bowl game if Ohio was playing. Got tears in my eyes thinking about my Mom. Alex who was downstairs sleeping, who rarely meows, popped up on the desk meowing and head butting me within 20 seconds. Stayed long enough to cheer me up and left. He always does that in those situations. Always amazes me how he always knows since I am not sobbing making any noise. Just a few tears but he appears from wherever he is in the house. As always, I had Bicardi and Tecumseh there too. But they are basically always next to me or on me if I am sitting or laying down. Or meowing at me to sit down so they can curl up on my lap. They are true lap cats.

Isn’t it great to get that kind of caring and unconditional love. They don’t care if our legs need shaving or if we have on not so sexy nightwear they will climb in bed and cuddle. Why can’t guys be like cats - well I can think of one or two reasons!

Bryan, glad your little Alex went the extra mile for you. It is amazing the way our pets can sense when we are out of sorts and come running to comfort us. My Thierry usually sleeps on my hip. Yesterday I threw out my back and somehow he knew and stayed by my feet rather than sleeping on me last night.

I had a “Ginger” colored love of my life that was at least part Maine Coon. Best friend I ever had, bar none!!! All would say she adored me just as much. Her passing was a VERY sad time, but I clung to the memories and some months later, after some time for respect, my wife and I saved two little kittens(brother and sister) from a shelter. And while there was talk of them having been possibly abused, they’ve warmed up and taken to us VERY quickly and heped to fill the void :)
Good luck, that’s a pretty kitty!!

ASPCA SUCCESS STORY OF THE WEEK: FLY LIKE AN EAGLE
When Jennifer Tripp’s husband returned from his job at American Eagle Airlines one day in January 2005, he brought with him an irresistible, albeit unexpected, souvenir.

As it turns out, he’d found an eight-week-old stray puppy who’d been left alone in the bitterly cold, rainy weather. “My husband called to confer with me, and stopped at the vet on the way home to get his first round of vaccinations started,” recalls Jennifer.

The little pup was also diagnosed with allergies and a skin condition, and went through several rounds of antibiotics. “He is now 100 percent better,” reports Jennifer, “and has a beautiful, shiny coat, and the most sweet, expressive eyes.”

But not everyone in the Tripp household has welcomed Eagle with open arms (or should we say, open paws). Says Jennifer: “Our two beautiful cats, Bailey and Brandy, are less than thrilled that their territory has been invaded by this quite large dog, but we are so happy with our family and love them as our own, special children!”

THANKSGIVING SAFETY TIP: BREAD DOUGH’S A NO-NO FOR DOGS AND CATS

There’ll be many cooks in the kitchen next Thursday—but don’t spoil your pet by giving him bread dough. According to veterinarians at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), when bread dough is ingested, an animal’s body heat causes the dough to rise in the stomach. As alcohol is produced during the rising process, the dough expands. Pets who’ve eaten bread dough may experience abdominal pain, bloat, vomiting, disorientation and depression.

Take the case of the Labrador retriever who ingested several rolls that his pet parent had placed on the oven to rise. The owner didn’t think much of this, and was more upset that the dog ate part of the holiday feast. But a few hours later, the owner noticed that the dog looked very lethargic. It wasn’t long before the canine was reluctant to move and was retching.

As the symptoms intensified, the owner brought him to an emergency clinic, which contacted the APCC. Unfortunately, the dog’s stomach was so severely distended that the only option at the time was to surgically remove the dough; he was also treated for alcohol toxicosis, caused by fermentation of the dough. The Labrador was kept at the clinic for the weekend and recovered completely.

Although this dog had ingested quite a bit of dough, an animal needs to eat only a small amount to cause a problem, because bread dough can rise to many times its size. Take care not to let Fluffy or Fido in the kitchen unsupervised when you’re baking this holiday season—especially if you’ve got a professional chowhound who’s always on the lookout for food.

In addition to offering poison prevention tips online, the APCC also runs an emergency hotline—(888) 426-4435—that provides round-the-clock telephone assistance.

Dee, you always find the best tips!! I wouldn’t have thought twice about bread dough–it doesn’t seem like the sort of thing that fuzzbutts would take an interest in, except maybe as a toy–but after I caught Snick sniffing around the Oreos yesterday, I’m being extra-careful! You never know WHAT’s on their little minds…and when you don’t know what they’re thinking about, they’re probably thinking about food. (Man…cats really DO take on the personalities of their owners!)

How funny!

Russian Pet Labrador Reports $20 Yearly Income

Created: 16.11.2006 15:51 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 15:54 MSK

A popular Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda tells a story of a pet labrador who reported an astonishingly high income of 500 rubles (approx. $20) after he had spent nights gathering coins in the courtyard of an apartment block where his owners live.

The dog called West has been living in the Shishakins family for two years now. The pet’s hobby is to collect coins in the courtyard, his owner Lyudmila Shishakina says.

“About a year ago, as the whole family gathered in the kitchen, West brought several coins in his teeth,” she says. “I still cannot figure out how he had managed to find him in the apartment. Most surprisingly, we had never trained him to do that. We laughed and awarded him with a piece of sausage and forgot everything about it.”

But the puppy, it appears, did not forget. Inspired by the prize he began to collect coins every time he was led outdoors. His daily “income” is 7 to 10 rubles.

“It’s fun to observe pedestrians dropping coins and our dog dashing to pick them up,” Igor Shishakin laughs.

The KP correspondent staged an experiment to test West’s abilities. The dog passed the test brilliantly. Over the past twelve months the smart pet has added a total of 500 rubles to the household budget.

Question: How can you tell if your cat has a hearing problem? I have a cat-Kombie, that seems not to hear or maybe understand that it is dinner time. If it were anything else I would chalk it up to being a cat but not food. I often have to carry him into the kitchen to the bowl before he “gets” that I’m feeding him. He will stand in the doorway to the house and I will tap the bowl with a spoon and get no reaction. Any advice what to look for? He seems easily startled, skittish.

Comment by Renee in Arkansas
2006-11-20 20:24:42

Rosie, if your kitty doesn’t respond to you calling his name when you are standing behind him, he probably is a little hard of hearing. I had a cat who was a little hard of hearing. It will make them jumpy or nervous. You might try making eye contact with him, when it is feeding time or any other time you want his attention. He needs to see your signals that you are giving. Once you have his attention, maybe you could use his favorite toy or a string on a pole to lure him to the kitchen to feed him. Good luck and hope all turns out well.

Cats are funny creatures with a strange learning process. He may think that he HAS to be carried in to get food. Does Kombie react to noises at other times? Maybe it is his sense of smell that is off and he doesn’t realize the tapping noise signals food in the bowl. Are you consistent with feeding time? If you feed him at the same time everyday he should eventually associate the time with the food. Mine have dry food all the time but I feed mine a bite of squisy food with nutritional supplements at 9:30 every night and starting at 9:15 they are lined up giving me soulful looks and pitiful meows because they want their treat.

Comment by CatRancher from Iowa
2006-11-20 21:24:13

My Freddy became depressed when I had to extend my hours at work. On day 3 of my extended work day, I noticed he wasn’t coming into the kitchen for “treat time.” I picked him up and he had lost so much weight it scared me! I took him the vet and ran many expensive tests, but nothing was found. I trusted my instints and began to feed Freddy by hand — little spoonfuls twice-a-day or more until he was full. He quickly turned around and bulked up, but he figured that he liked this extra attention and I had to gradually ween him off of spoon-feeding. They HATE changes in routine, but I occassionally mix things up a bit, so in case an emergency comes up where I can’t feed them ON SCHEDULE, they don’t get their kitty-britches in a bunch. Geeezzz… I still am roused every morning at 4:30 by naughty kitties…my alarm doesn’t go off till 5:30…

I feed them when I get home. Bug (Kombie’s littermate) sees the truck in the driveway and is ready for his gooy food. Kombie will sometimes meet me sometimes not. I have dry available all the time but since I live in the country and they are inside/outside cats I feed them a spoon or two of wet just so I can check to make sure they are okay, no boo boos. I use a specific sound to call them but I think my husband abuses the noise so I started just using the spoon on the plate noise for gooy food time. Last night he just looked at me with the plate in my hand. I think he just likes the idea of me carrying him to get his dinner because he doesn’t have run the gauntlet of feet!

My Josephine is mostly deaf. It’s kind of funny to startle her when she is napping, because she wakes up confused and yells at me! Anyway, I’ll sometimes have to stomp on the floor (or cause some type of vibration) to get her attention. That usually gets her running my way.

Another fix….. to cute for words… about the hard to hear kitten…. Most short haired white cats with blue eyes are deaf…. try hitting on floor to get its attention! Used a pot and pan over the kitten (per VET)… to see if it could hear… It would get lost in house and cry… I would tap floor beside bed and she would come to my hand and I would put her to bed and all was happy!!!

I never got to see my rescue cat Mickey as a kitten and have always wondered what he must have looked like and how cute he must have been.

Today’s kitten is the picture I have never got to see. It’s like it’s the same cat and I can’t stop looking at her.

Mickey is also part Maine Coon, long furry tail, same exact coloring, tufted ears etc and though it may sound a litlte crazy, I finally feel as if I’ve seen him as he was as a baby.

When I got him, he was probably 10-12 months old, abandoned and frightened. Now, he’s sweet, playful and seems almost to be over the trauma.
