One of my cats actually meows when anyone sneezes, as if to say “bless you!”.

My cat Chloe does the same thing. She could be sleeping comfortably in another room, but if I sneeze she comes running and meows desperately at me, like saying “Are you okay?” It’s sweet.

I luuurve fluffy kitties!
My Kingston likes to sit in front of the computer too, so I can’t see the monitor or use the keyboard, so I have to give him pats or some treats. I can see Tippy doing just that when she gets older!

Dee from Tampa will probably have more detailed and better information - but I learned from my calendar “365 Kittens a Year” that cats have a number of meows - one of which is specifically a greeting. And what’s more, cats meow to humans - they purr to one another and hiss but they don’t meow - so I think.

Comment by Rosie in SA
2006-11-29 16:08:15

There’s more than that. “Me” is a friendly voice, and “Meow” is more aggressive, but “Ow” is back off! But I beg to differ about purrs, unless I am an official cat, my bug purs at me all the time!

Comment by Charles
2006-11-29 17:15:00

My statement was ambiguous - I did not mean that cats meow only to people but only purr to other cats. Thank goodness they purr to us - it’s one of the truly wonderful gifts of cat contact. Thank you for your comment.

Good, I was beginning to wonder! I have used to work for this vet as a receptionist once and they had this cat that was having IV treatments for an illness I don’t remember, but it would hiss and spit at the techs as they went past the cage. So I went over and “Me-ed” to it softly and it “Me-ed” softly back and came to the front to have his head scratched. The techs looked at me and I just replied, “You just have to know how to speek cat!”

It is said that cats trill, purr and hiss to each other in the wild. Meowing (NOT the caterwauling when looking for a mate or preparing for a fight) is developed by interactions with humans. They learn to talk to us. If you have more than one fuzzbutt, notice that their meows are NOT directed to each other, just to us. At least that is my experience with my 8 fuzzies. The moms do “talk” to their kittens, however, with trills and purr-growls.

One of my 15 week old kittens, who is very vocal, talks to me all the time. He it’s kind of funny but I know what he want by the way he meows. He has one for where is everybody I need attention, one for the food bowl is empty and he even tells you when the water is empty if you let it get that way.

Doesn’t he have me trained?

Don’t they all. We ARE OWNED by our cats! My Freddy has a special meow-croak he uses to let me know when it’s time for a treat. He just started doing this in the last 6 months and he’s 5-years-old. He was never much of a talker before, but when the treats are slow in coming…well…he felt he needed to make a statement and let me know how he feels about “treats”…. Have you heard of Hugs and Kisses cat treats? They are my fuzzbutts’ favorites…you can find them online…

How wonderful that she announces her presence! Daisy sometimes walks into the lounge and throws herself onto her side on the floor, right in the middle of the room. She is officially making herself available for stroking. If nobody takes any notice within 30 seconds she is mightily offended. (And of course if she doesn’t want to be stroked she has ways of avoiding us and making it plain.) Even when she was a tiny kitten, she took breaks from being a pet - if approached during these times, she would fix me with a look which plainly said, “Do you mind? I’m on my lunch break” - ! I never before had a cat who took time off.

Lynn in Pa, yes Tippy is so cute. I agree. We all miss Dee. Hope she is ok. Here is something I found funny, maybe it will sorta make up for Dee not being here.

Twas the Night of Thanksgiving

‘Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn’t sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned–the dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door,
And gazed at the fridge full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
Till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground!!

I crashed through the ceiling. Floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie,
But I managed to yell as I soared past the trees..
Happy eating to all! (Pass the cranberries, please)

I know this was a little long but I hope it gives everyone a chuckle. It gave me one.

Comment by Lynn from PA

Tippy looks and sounds like a Maine Coon. We have one who looked a lot like her when young. Maine Coon’s can get very vocal as they get older. Our “Rocky” has many different meows for various things. He’s neutered, but he still gets frisky somehow and has the neatest trill/meow that he uses when he tries to get some tail. Our girl kitties just look at him like, “dude, you’re neutered.”
