Bootes and Barkley

Bootes and BarkleyThis is Bootes and Barkley at three months old. They were rescued from a trailer park and are now my foster kittens, just waiting for a forever home. The sweetest boys you can imagine; they purr most of the time and especially when you hold them. Bootes is gold at his skin and comes out to a light orange. In the sunshine, he looks like he glows! Both so loving and sweet, it is hard to believe they were rescued as strays.

They are so beautiful and the sweetest together!
I had fostered a cat & wound up falling in love with
her so I adopted her. The Strays Halfway House in
Illinois had said a lady brought her since she was lost.
Out in the cold, she was very sick but I nursed her back
to health. I named her Ashley & she has a great home now!

I hope they get to go to their forever home together. They are so precious.

Yesterday I had a beautiful orange and white girl escort me to my bus stop. I had never seen her, but she must have been somebody’s pet because I picked her up and held her until the bus came. I put her down and she walked away. She was purring the whole time.

Hope B &B find a loving home together. You must be very strong to be able to give them up. I could not foster. I am afraid I would never be able to let them go. I would probably be the cat lady by now. Thank God for people like you.

My two brothers - Bug and Kombie - do the “I love you so much face lick - bite” for eachother all the time. I never get tired of watching them. Kitties are more entertaining than TV.
Okay, on another note, this is something you will only see in Texas:
The last week or so has been cold, 30’s and 40’s. A girl came out of a building on campus where I work, shivering - wearing a large coat with a hood and fur lining, with a scarf and she was wearing flip flops…and she wonders why she was cold.

Rosie, that is so funny!
Reminds of 1967 when the whole world was in Montreal for the World’s Fair. We saw a guy with Texas plates and skis on his car. I guess he thought he might as well get some skiing in while he was here in the frozen north….Only problem? It was July. True story!

Love the two orange boys! I too hope they will get to stay together…..

“Kitties are more entertaining than TV.”
I’ll second that!! As THE only person left in the USA without a TV (by choice) I have so much fun, playing with, and observing my two boys, Tavareech & Koreetsa. (phonetic spelling of their Russian names) Never a dull moment! Even when they are napping, I like to watch them, note how beautiful and perfect their coats are, see them twitch as they dream “Mouse Police” dreams…
It is said that having a pet is good therapy for anyone, and really, it’s the giving…to the pet that makes one better, inside and out. And the dear ones give back so much!

**ASPCA SUCCESS STORY OF THE WEEK: WE LOVE LUCY**
…And so does her mom, Elizabeth Ginn.

A registered cat rescuer in Canada, Elizabeth is devoted to fixing the stray cat situation in Alberta, in an area where “cats are seen as disposable commodities.” That’s how Lucy, an older Himalayan, came to be abandoned by her former owner three years ago.

“She was found wandering in a local park,” remembers Elizabeth. The feline, estimated to be between 12 and 16 years old, was very ill and required a week of veterinary care on IV fluids.

“And two years ago,” Elizabeth adds, “Lucy had a stroke, was paralyzed from the waist down and went blind. The veterinarian at the clinic recommended euthanasia, suggesting that perhaps she had a brain tumor.”

But Elizabeth felt something was not quite right with that option. “I said no and took Lucy home,” she tells us.

Two days later, Lucy had a full recovery—and has been 100 percent ever since. “Everyone was puzzled as to why she had this temporary setback, and we think it might have been a reaction to ear mite medication.”

Since then, Elizabeth and Lucy have continued to strengthen their bond. Says the proud pet parent, “Loving, affectionate, loyal and independent, Lucy will spend the rest of her days with me.”

Hi Dee! Good story. So happy for Lucy. Every cat deserves a chance. Never give up, try everything first to make them better. I had a kitten(6wks.old) who had a bad inflamation in her back leg joints. The vet said , he didn’t give her much of a chance but I said, if I have anything to say about it she will. I took her home, gave her some medicine and lots of TLC. She got better.

Comment by Andi
2006-12-08 20:51:40

I don’t agree with this. There comes a point where it is kinder to the cat to let them go. To never let them go, to try everything, is a sop to you at the expense of the cat, and potentially at the expense of every other cat in your household. Sometimes love is knowing when to let them go.

Andi, I guess you misunderstood me. I know when to draw the line. It’s just that sometimes I’ve had a sick cat and they got better but when my cat Bear had a broke back, there was no hope, the vet said. It depends on what is wrong with them, whether it is curable or there is no hope left. Then, I spend some time with them and say goodbye before they go to the Rainbow Bridge. I can’t stand to see a cat suffer.

Too true. I rescued a dobie that was so skinny she only wieghed 40 lbs. You could make out every bone in her body and her nails were so long they were cutting her pads. When I took her home she was so scared that I had to carry her outside to do her business. She needed so much time to adjust most people would have just let her go, but I did “pet’ theropy. I sat next to her on the floor and pet her for three days. She started moving around then and after a week she would follow me everywhere I went with her head on my thigh. After a month I took her back to the vet and she was 5 lbs overwieght, oops! However, she was also diagnosed with diversticulitus (sp?) and bone cancer. I took her home and fed her and loved her until it was apparent that she was in real pain. I realized that I was being selfish and had her put to sleep. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done but I was consoled knowing that the last three months of my Daisy’s life was probalby her best.

What cute orange sweetie pies. Years ago I lived in an apartment that did not allow pets. There was a stray orange cat and a couple of other tenants and I “adopted”. We would leave out food and sneak him in on really cold days. All the little girls in the apartment named him Custard, after Strawberry Shortcake’s cat. I only lived in that apartment for a year but Custard was well looked after by the tenants who remained.

Dee, I sent the “10 Things a cat thinks” to my friend who is also an animal lover (Cats, Dogs, Snake, Lizards, Birds….) and she came up with one not on the list but should have been a no brainer:
If I sleep all day can I keep my humans up all night playing?

Comment by Dee from Tampa
2006-12-08 19:54:44

haha! That is so true! I start off each night with my bedroom door open—my 3 cats are calm and sleeping at that point—but around 4 AM, they start to go crazy! All of them will jump wildly all over the bed—(I swear Atticus practically disclocated my shoulder a few nights ago!)—and that’s when I yell at them to get out and I have to shut the door. Then I hear them crashing around in the living room for a while, until they wear themselves out.

Comment by Andi
2006-12-08 20:54:03

Yeah, mine start yowling between 2:30 and 3 AM. I solve this by not letting them sleep during the evening hours when I’m at home. I chase them with laser pointers, pull out toy mice, pick them up and snuggle them periodically thoroughout the evening, so that they’ll sleep when I go to bed.

it does work — usually.

I have an orange girl tabby and a grey boy tabby. I know they can never be separated. They are going on 12 years old and just as devoted to each other as they were as kittens. Please try and adopt them together if possible. Thanks for fostering them. It takes a special person indeed to do that.

Everyone stay warm if it’s cold where you are! Have a good weekend. See ya Monday!

Found this on a blog—thought it was clever…

**Mornings with Opie**

Six twenty five a.m.:
I get up for work. I open my bedroom door. Opie is not in his usual spot sleeping on the floor in the dining room, waiting for me to get up. I begin my search…

Opie is not on the floor;
Opie’s not behind the door’
Opie is not on the chair;
Opie isn’t anywhere!

Opie is not on the porch.
Now I must refine my search;
Bedroom, bathroom, basement - nil;
No Opie on the windowsill!

Just when I think Opie’s gone,
There he runs - across the lawn!
“Opie! Opie!”, do I shout;
But, how the heck did he get out?

I felt like I was insane and seeing things. Everything was locked up. I couldn’t imagine how he managed to get out between 4:00AM when I got up to go to the bathroom and 6:25AM when I got up for work. After I got him safely in the house I had to run and find the way he got out. Fortunately, it didn’t take long. I found the screen in the living room window had been pushed out. Opie left a nice wide-open window for all the burglars to get in. Now he was crying to go out. I guess he forgot about the first time he fell through a screen.

Six twenty five a.m.:

I get up for work, blah, blah, blah…

And, upon this morning dreary, eyes still sleepy, bones are weary;
There is Opie laying, napping sweetly on the dining room floor.
“Good morning, Opie”, happy, napping as my feet go tapping, tapping
Towards the kitchen for my breakfast and my coffee, most delectast;
Opie follows as he always follows me into the kitchen prancing through the door hoping for his milky and nothing more.

While I tend to flip the light and Opie hops up with delight,
My gaze is drawn upon a horror - horror on my kitchen floor!
My coffee pot is lying shattered, glassy pieces mostly scattered!
Oh! That Opie would behave instead of acting like a knave!
And now my coffee pot is spread between the sink and cupboard door;
As Opie sits upon the sink, “And, you’ll have coffee nevermore!”

Lucky for Opie I had a spare coffee maker. ~sigh~
