LOL Brandi, you brought to mind a fond memory. Years ago when my mom’s cat had kittens I was in my room with a ham sandwich and the kittens were tumbling on the floor. I set the plate with the sandwich on the bed and went to get a glass of milk. By the time I got back with my milk the kittens had climbed the bedspread and had eaten every bite of ham and were innocently washing paws and faces!

When my Sebastian “the beast” was a kitten I was eating a cheese sandwich.
He climbed up to my shoulder and proceeded to paw at my mouth, and he tried to put his mouth around what I was chewing! Ah, kittens!

Aww, that brings back a great memory about my Juliet (as everyone knows–the best pet I ever had–she died of renal failure last year at 19…). She loved American cheese. She would not touch “fine” cheese, but she went berserk over Kraft singles! And in true Pavlovian fashion, whenever she heard the cellophane crinkling as I was unwrapping a slice, she would run into the kitchen, meowing frantically. But, she would run to you and meow frantically whenever she heard any cellophane of any kind! So, whenever anyone unwrapped a piece of candy, or unwrapped a CD, or crinkled ANY cellophane, she would run to you and meow for some cheese! I’d always say, “It’s not all about the cheese, Juliet!” Even though I have my 3 cats now, I still miss her…

When holding a cat, be sure to support their hind legs. Think how you would feel if someone hoisted you a hundred feet off the ground by the armpits. Now she will have a loving home and a sister to play with. What a happy future for this little bundle of fuzz.

“Flight ready for takeoff.” Puffball is beautiful! She is about the same size as my tiny cat Emily, who is over a year old now. She only weighs 6 pounds—not skinny, just very little. The vet says she is just naturally small, but I wonder if her growth was “stunted” considering she was not regularly fed when I rescued her at 3 months old. She and another kitten belonged to my neighbors, whom I kept giving cat food to because they said they could not afford cat food—strange considering they could afford bottle after bottle of Bacardi! My neighbors were evicted and left her and the other kitten locked in a bedroom—to potentially die. I found them 3 days later–starving and terrified. I planned on taking them to the no-kill shelter the next day, but here it is 11 months later and they are not going anywhere. I adore them. And Atticus loves having two cats to play with. Can anyone with more knowledge on this topic, such as breeders (CatRancher, Brandi Lee!), inform me: can a cat’s growth be forever stunted due to inadequate food as a small kitten?

Years ago my sister’s inlaw found a beautiful small tabby lying along the side of the road. Someone had cut her tail off and left her to die. The sister-in- law forgot all about her plans to visit a friend and picked the baby up and took her to the vet. For whatever reason her other cats did not like this baby and my sis ter wound up bringing her from MD to northeast PA. She couldn’t keep her, either because of all her cats, but we ganged up on our mother and she took Muffy in. She was starved as a kitten and as a result her legs were stunted. However, that did not keep her from getting into the same mischief as any cat with normal legs. But my mother will tell you she was the most loving well-behaved baby anyone would ever want and lived a long and spoiled life.

    Dee -

i do know that what they’re fed as wee ones can have a LOT to do with how big they end up later. as an example, my boy Soren is quite a large (and sometimes husky) boy. I think he weighs in at around 12lbs or so. i fed him high quality kitten food (and lots of it) when he was growing, so he grew to a very nice size. his two littermates, on the other hand, never got kitten food and only had access to adult cat food of marginal quality. and they’re both very small little girls. six pounds at the most, i’d say. so you’re little girl will probably always be small…. but that only makes her more snugglable!

Dani–thanks for that! And she is very snuggable—my 2 male cats are built like football players–one is 14 pounds and one is 16 pounds–but Emily is like a perpetual kitten. And the funniest part is that even though she is younger and much tinier (and a girl! ha!) than the other two, she is more fearless than they are! When I give them treats, Emily steals them from the big boys. And she starts most of the roughhousing with them. And on the 4th of July, someone set off a bunch of fireworks—the two boys ran under the bed and tiny Emily ran to look out the living room window and check out the noise! But, I think the boys are jealous of her; a few months ago I had left the linen closet door ajar and I saw Emily walk in and I SWEAR, I saw the boys shut the door on her! Of course, I know they were all playing, but I found it funny to think that the boys were saying to each other, “OK, on the count of three….” haha!

Same with my boys. People tried to tell me they were sooo much larger than their sisters because they were boys. I KNOW its because of the good food they got when very young. The sisters went to a woman who kept them outside and only fed them Alley Cat adult food, and they are only half the size of mine.

Yeah, mine were offered the high-quality kitten food and refused it — they want the adult food (I also have an adult cat). So I have two tiny little girls who won’t eat the kitten food and an 18-pound tom who if I offer him kitten and adult food will eat the kitten food. *facepalm* How to get the girls the nutrition they need and keep the adult cat from becoming a blimp?

I reallly don’t know if indequate food can “stunt” a kitten’s growth. I have my miniature Maine Coon, Phoebe, who was sickly when young, plagued with chronic UI problems. She was well fed, but perhaps she didn’t absorb all the nutrients she should have when young because of fighting off infections, medications, etc. Now, she is healthy and beautiful and weighs in at over 8 lbs, but is so much smaller in stature than my others. It may be a genetic problem, too, who knows?

I fed my cats all the same. But them being different animals from different mothers, they all grew to different sizes. Chester who was rescued from a pound, grew to be 22 pounds. Max rescued from under the hood of a car before he was weened, grew to be 19 solid muscular pounds. But never lost his kitten.

The vet I worked for did eye tucks for that breed. (I couldn’t handle them because I’m alergic to only to Shar Pei. It happens more than you think). Anyway, the folds of skin turn the eyelids under and the lashes start to scratch the corneas, very painful and potenially dangerous.

    Dee,
Sounds like you have yourself a “teacup cat :) I found this article for you……..
    DWARF, MIDGET AND MINIATURE CATS
    (INCLUDING “TEACUP CATS”)
    Copyright 2002-2006 Sarah Hartwell

Smaller than usual cats occur for several reasons - some genetic, some hormonal and some environmental. Dwarfism is a term which covers numerous conditions resulting in undersized individuals. It usually results from a combination of genetic factors and endocrine (hormone) malfunction. Some forms are caused by early injury e.g. physical damage to the pituitary or thyroid gland. Dwarf or stunted individuals can also result from malnutrition and chronic illness in early life. I am aware that some terms are now considered more politically correct than others, however political correctness is a human consideration and not a feline one.

Those seeking miniature cats (often known as “teacup cats”) should be warned that not all petite cats are dwarf or miniature. The normal size range for cats is around 5 lbs to over 12 lbs and cats at the lower end of this spectrum are not necessarily miniatures. I have seen some advertisements claiming that cats under 10 lbs are miniature, when in fact they fall well within the normal size range! In the past, cats at the lower end of the size range were homed or sold as pets, particularly in the Persian breed where a massive, cobby build is required by the breed standard. The modern trend for miniature cats means that less scrupulous breeders charge high prices for runty or under-sized cats and some “breeding programmes” are little more than kitten mills. Genuine miniature cats come from breeding lines where the trait has been, or is being, fixed by selective breeding and where the cats are a consistently small size due to genetic mutation or to progressive downsizing. Genuine breeders pay strict attention to health, hygiene and to the homes their cats are adopted into. Reputable breeders limit the number of litters produced each year to ensure the health of the female cats and will take great care to avoid excessive inbreeding (damaging to the immune system) and to widen their gene pools.

How interesting! I had no idea! According to the article, she is in the normal size range, but what is so odd about Emily is that her limbs are very short and her head and neck are very tiny–very kittenlike. I love giving her Petromalt, because she has a tiny little mouth and I can see her little bird tongue– that cracks me up! When she was a kitten, I’d always ask her, “Don’t you want to grow?” Well, I guess that answer was, “NO!” haha!

I had seen “Munchkins” advertised and on TV and cat people in my area said that they were genetic throw backs, because when bred all babies don’t come out Munchkins. It seems you have to have 20 generations of consistant breed charactoristics to be sure that you have a “real” breed. So, if you go to a breeder and only some of the kittens display the miniture trait, they are not real minitures, if they were all the kittens in every litter would be.

How tragic! Even though all of us would never think any of our pets could do such a thing, a baby should never be left unsupervised with any animal!

    Dec 12, 2006 12:22 am US/Central

    **Puppy Gnaws Off Baby’s Toes**
(AP) BOSSIER CITY, La. A puppy chewed off four of a baby girl’s toes next to her sleeping parents, who were then booked on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence, police said Monday.

Mary Shannon Hansche, 22, and Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, told police they woke to the baby’s cries, found her mangled foot and took her to the hospital early Sunday.

Police said that they were sleeping on a mattress and that the month-old girl was in an infant seat beside them when the 6-week-old pit bull began chewing on her toes.

“They did not see the dog injuring the child,” police spokesman Mark Natale said.

The puppy might have been trying to nurse on the toes of the baby, a veterinarian speculated.

“I know that sounds a little far-fetched, but that’s the first thing that comes to my mind,” Michael Dale said.

The girl underwent surgery Sunday in Shreveport. There was no way to reattach her toes, Natale said.

The puppy had no record of receiving shots and will be quarantined for 10 days while it is checked for rabies, officials said. Natale said he did not know what the animal’s fate would be after that.

The child will be placed in a foster home until the case against her parents is settled, officials said.

Unfortunately, my kitties only eat Nutro Natural Choice Nothing else will do. I found it while trying many foods for Freddy who is sensitive to corn-based products… I also feed them the wet food from Nutro Natural Choice…I occassionally get coupons, but if you ever see anything for Nutro, let me know! With 8 fuzzbutts to feed, well..it adds up…

I gave the website for the free coupons there a few months ago–did you get those? For a free 4 pound bag—they gave me a cat food coupon and a dog food coupon—

Thanks, Dee, yes I did get the coupon for those… I still belong to their Breeder program (Nutro’s) and occasionally receive coupons.
