NordyNordy is our baby Norwegian Forest Cat. He’s 11 weeks old, already very intelligent and also lovely. He’s a good climber and he “talks” a lot. In the evening he likes to cuddle under the blanket for a while, then sleeps on the bed.

Tony Little lives about 2 miles from me. I’ve never met him, but what a coincidence you brought up the Gazelle—-I read a long article about him last night. He proposed to his girlfriend in the coolest way—she is from a small town in New York, and she loved the 4th of July parade that they have every year. So, as the parade was proceeding, the fire truck stopped in front of her in the crowd, and two firefighters unrolled a huge, “Will you marry me, (forgot her name)? sign. The entire town was in on it. And, of course, Tony had arranged for a news crew to be there! haha! SO romantic. He is 50—he looks great.

Nordy looks so much like my little guinea-pig sized cat, Emily. I always thought she was “just a long-haired cat”, but after seeing photos of other cats, I wonder if she is not the breed I believe she is. But, aren’t Norwegians normally large cats?

Can you believe the extent that the engineer and assistant conductor went to for this little guy? (Of course, I’m crying!)

**’Miracle’ Pug Run Over By Train Escapes Unharmed**
Engineer Says Dog Stayed Under Train

    UPDATED: 6:59 am PST December 19, 2006

WALPOLE, Mass. — His owners are calling their pet Max the Miracle Dog because he escaped unharmed after being run over by a commuter train.

Boston television station WCVB reported that Max sneaked out of his Walpole home on Friday morning and wandered onto some nearby train tracks. The engineer, Kym Berry, spotted him and slammed on the brakes.

“I blew the horn and put on the bell and he jumped right in the middle of the gauge and just kept running. So I put the train in emergency and he went right underneath the train. And it turns out, he came out the third coach back,” Berry said.

He came out in perfect condition.

“Thank God, he was … not a scratch on him. He was so little that he went under the train and he was fine. Not a scratch,” his owner Robin Lennon said.

At that point, the assistant conductor Pete Tomasini decided to take Max under his wing until they could locate his owners. They made Max an honorary conductor for the day. The passengers loved him, and Max seemed happy, too.

“Every time I stopped he came up and gave kisses. He was very friendly, his little bum was wiggling, he was wagging his tail, he was happy,” Berry said.

His owners said Max seemed unaffected by the ordeal, although he seemed to need a little recovery time.

“When he did come home he slept for 12 hours straight. He was totally exhausted,” Lennon said.

They were praising MBTA workers for their quick-thinking response and for taking care of the pooch until his owners could be found.

    Found it:
Unlike some other cat breeds with a location in their names, the Norwegian Forest Cat truly did originate in Norway. It is a hardy, sturdy cat with a thick, heavy coat, well-equipped to survive in the harsh Scandanavian winters.

They have almond-shaped eyes and sweet expressions. “Wegies” (WEE-jees) are found in most colors and patterns, although most commonly in tabby patterns with white.

Although they bear some superficial resemblance to the Maine Coon, mostly in coloration, they are in fact totally different cats. They have straight profiles, a more compact body, and very sweet expressions. The nose and tips of the ears should form an equilateral triangle. They are a very slow-maturing breed, taking a full five years to reach their full size and development. Males generally grow to between fifteen and eighteen pounds in adulthood, with females somewhat smaller.

The first documented appearance of this breed in the show world was at a cat show in Oslo, Norway in 1938, though the onset of World War II derailed the breed for the next few decades. In the 1970s, Norwegian breeders made a concerted effort to preserve this breed, and by 1977 had standardized the breed in their country, and the first breeding pair were exported to the United States in late 1979.

They are a loving, affectionate, though not overly demonstrative cat. They require regular grooming to maintain their coats, as their full undercoats can mat with inattention.

Q My cat doesn’t like to be held, but there are times when I must hold her, such as at the vet. What should I do?

A You can train your cat to become more comfortable with being held by doing trust-building exercises. Begin by petting your cat when she’s relaxed. Then, place a hand on each side of her for a short while. Do this several times a day. Gradually work up to placing a hand around her. When she tolerates this, the next step is to pick her up (just a few inches off the ground) and place her back down. The “pick-up and put-down” should be over with quickly, before she knows what happened. Make sure that when you so this, you hold her upright and not on her back. You also want to support her hindquarters, so she feels secure and comfortable.

Work up to being able to carry her to another room and back. End each session with a reward, such as a treat or some petting time. Before long, your kitty should learn to tolerate, and even to enjoy, being held.

Growing up in Michigan, I want snow, or atleast cold weather at Christmas. And it’s been warmer than usual at this time of year. So far the reports are that it will rain and be in the upper 70s on Christmas day.

I’m in Northern Colorado (Ft. Collins) and it is BLIZZARDING! My fiance lives in Denver and they closed down the convenience store where he worked. All the schools got out at 10:30 this am, and I work at JCPenney and they closed it down at around 3pm. They were hoping people would shop since they weren’t working, but they had to give in. There are drifts up to five feet high all over the place, and I couldn’t see to walk to the mail box!

**Alleged Bird Smugglers Caught At Canadian Border**

    POSTED: 10:00 am PST December 19, 2006
    UPDATED: 10:10 am PST December 19, 2006

    BUFFALO, N.Y. — It’s a smuggling case — for the birds.

U.S. Customs agents said Monday that they caught two bird smugglers at the Peace Bridge that connects western New York and Canada.

Officials said John Beale and Frank Salvini attracted the attention of agents when they said they had gone into Canada to buy 25 pounds of bird seed.

Agents searched the men and say they found seven live finches that are worth up to $200 each.

The tiny birds were hidden in a coat pocket and a fanny pack. The men were fined $1,000 each and also could face criminal charges.
