Sophia

SophiaSophia is a survivor. She was rescued while crossing a busy roadway by my wife who risked limb and leg to get out of the car, stop the traffic, and snatch her from a terrible fate. Safe now in her new home, she is full of playful energy and has quite the capricious temperment.

Adorable. She looks like she’s been sniffing the cocoa tin?? And you have to ask why your heroic wife had to tell the drivers to stop?? Still, at least it clarifies what you need to buy her for Christmas - A new phone booth to get changed in.

I rescued my Midori from the middle of four lanes of traffic too. At first I thought it was some terrible accident, that she was out in the middle of the street, but as I got to know her better I realized she’d probably gone out there on purpose to play with the cars. She thought the whole world was a toy. This little sweetie sounds the same!

What a great story! God bless the braveheart who ran into traffic to save your precious fuzzball. I once was in a vehicle with someone else at the wheel, when we saw a dog get hit by an oncomming van, it wasn’t at a high rate of speed thank God ,but the guy just left him so I screamed at my friend who was driving our car to stop now!!! I ran out and picked up the dog off the street then sat with him in the yard checking him over, at first I thought he was dead. Then he came to and slowly started to get his bearings. In only a minute or two he was up running around. Then we went to a few houses nearby and tried to find his owner………..then a lady came walking up the street…..she had lost him and had been looking for him. We told her what happened and that she should get him checked out by a vet right away………..and that was that, we never saw the lady or dog again, but guess what!! We did see the guy who hit him and gave him hell about it, and directed him to the lady who’s dog he hit, he wanted to apologize and make sure the dog was okay then……………………

**Cat Comes Home Weeks After Being Kicked Off Bus**

POSTED: 7:06 am PST December 21, 2006

PIKESVILLE, Md. — Athena the cat knows her way home.

Three weeks after she was chased off a bus in Maryland, the black cat with green eyes has made her way back to her owner.

Athena’s owner lives in New York and had been visiting her parents in Maryland over Thanksgiving. Athena got loose from her carrying case after her owner fell asleep. Thinking she was a stowaway, the bus driver let her off about 20 miles into the trip.

Owner Ali Streimer didn’t know she wasn’t supposed to take the cat on the bus.

After three weeks of frantic searching, Athena finally was spotted near the bus stop where she and Streimer first got on.

Despite her ordeal, Athena is in good health.

**CLEAN-UP DAY FOR PHILLY’S FERALS**

Pier 70 is a TNR colony project located behind retail stores in South Philadelphia. The cats are regularly fed and cared for—but due to a letter to city officials from an anti-TNR activist, the colony was at risk.

How could colony caretakers send a message to the city that the project was important and well-organized? On December 2, the Philadelphia Community Cats Council and Alley Cat Allies, together with the ASPCA, organized a clean-up day. From 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., more than 30 volunteers braved blustery winds to collect trash that had accumulated over the last few months. “The stretch of land behind the shopping center was totally transformed in a matter of hours,” says the ASPCA’s Megan Kane, Community Initiatives Manager, Northeast Region. “Feeding stations were organized and traps were placed around the area.”

The ASPCA provided breakfast, lunch and trash pick-up. Adds Kane, “Volunteers left with a strong feeling of accomplishment and a collaborative spirit—and ASPCA baseball caps as a thank-you!”

**AAASPCA Success Story of the Week: “MAXIMUM SECURITY”**

When I lost my cat to renal failure,” Robin Stein-Corivano remembers, “the loneliness was unbearable.” Feeling ready to open her heart and home to a new pet, Robin took a trip to her local shelter.

“I had browsed all the cats and kittens, but kept coming back to one in particular—a beautiful tabby!” Robin tells us. Unfortunately, the cat in question was scheduled to be euthanized that very day. Since he was about 1 1/2 years old, Robin was concerned that he wasn’t as likely to get adopted as the cute little kittens were. “So there I was, taking him out of his cage and welcoming him into his new home.”

That was more than 15 years ago. “Max is 17 now, and he has a great life,” reports Robin. “He has, without a doubt, won my heart over time and time again.”

**Coins Don’t Smell, You Do**
Next time someone says a piece of metal they’re holding smells, you can tell they’re the smelly ones. The metallic odor experienced after handing out change at the deli is created by the breakdown of oils in skin after touching objects that contain iron. The chemical reaction has most of us running to wash our hands to get that musty scent out.

**Wrapping Presents (With a Cat)**

Clear large space on table for wrapping present.
Go to wardrobe and collect bag in which present is contained, and close door.
Open door and remove cat from wardrobe.
Go to cupboard and retrieve rolls of wrapping paper.
Go back and remove cat from cupboard.
Go to drawer and collect transparent sticky tape, ribbons, scissors, labels, etc.
Lay out present and wrapping materials on table, to enable wrapping strategy to be formed.
Go back to drawer to get string, remove cat that has been in the drawer since last visit, and collect string.
Remove present from bag.
Remove cat from bag.
Open box to check present, remove cat from box, replace present.
Lay out paper to enable cutting to size.
Cut the paper to size, trying to keep the cutting line straight.
Throw away first sheet because cat tried to chase the scissors and tore paper.
Cut second sheet of paper to size by putting cat in the bag the present came out of.
Place present on cut-to-size paper.
Lift up edges of paper to seal in present, wonder why edges now don’t reach, and find cat between present and paper. Remove cat and retry.
Place object on paper, to hold in place, while cutting transparent sticky tape.
Spend next 20 minutes carefully trying to remove transparent sticky tape from cat with pair of nail scissors.
Seal paper down with transparent sticky tape, making corners as neat as possible.
Look for roll of ribbon; chase cat down hall and retrieve ribbon.
Try to wrap present with ribbon in a two-directional turn.
Re-roll up ribbon and remove paper that is now torn, due to cat’s enthusiasm in chasing ribbon end.
Repeat steps 12-22 until down to last sheet of paper.
Decide to skip steps 12-16 in order to save time and reduce risk of losing last sheet of paper. Retrieve old cardboard box that you know is right size for sheet of paper.
Put present in box, and tie down with string.
Remove string, open box and remove cat.
Put all packing materials in bag with present and head for lockable room.
Once inside room, lock door and start to re-lay out packing materials.
Remove cat from box, unlock door, put cat outside door, close door and re-lock.
Lay out last sheet of paper. (Admittedly this is difficult in the small area of the toilet, but try your best!)
Seal box, wrap with paper and start repairs by very carefully sealing down tears with transparent sticky tape. Now tie up with ribbon and decorate with bows to hide worst affected areas.
Label, then sit back and admire your handiwork, congratulating yourself on making good of a bad job.
Unlock door, and go to kitchen to make drink and feed cat.
Spend next 15 minutes looking for cat, before coming to obvious conclusion.
Unwrap present, untie box and remove cat.
Retrieve all discarded sheets of wrapping paper, feed cat and retire to lockable room for last attempt, making certain you are alone and the door is locked.
At time of handing over present, smile sweetly at receiver’s face, as they try and hide their contempt at being handed such a badly wrapped present.
Swear to yourself that next year, you will get the store to wrap the darn thing for you.
Smile smugly, knowing that the recipient could have received a cat!

Well, you just knew I had to post a tear-jerker—happy tears. Great story!

**Christmas Tree Cat**

Her people had put her outside the door. She was so excited!
There were so many things to see, smell and do she didn’t know where to start! She was aware that there was a lot of activity around her home, with all the people coming in and out, but she had too many things to explore to take much notice.

She walked all through the building, where her people lived, but all she found were closed doors. She decided to go outside the building. She had stood at the window many times looking out and now she was here!

She chased a few squirrels, played in the leaves and even tried climbing a tree for the first time. Just when she was beginning to think she didn’t ever want to go inside again, she heard a loud growl and turned around. There was a large brown thing coming at her! She hissed and took off running with the brown thing right behind her. It was almost on top of her when she came to a tree and used her new found tree climbing skills to escape. Whew! That was close!

The big brown growler stood at the bottom of the tree for a long time, but it finally got tired and left. She stayed in the tree until she was sure it wasn’t coming back and then climbed down to the ground. Just when she got to the ground, she heard another loud noise. This one was louder and coming faster than the last. It was huge and spewed smelly fumes.

It narrowly missed her as she ran across the street. She was scared and wanted to go home. Outside wasn’t fun after all. There were too many bad things outside. She went to the door where her people lived but everything was quiet and still. She cried pitifully but no one came to the door to let her in.

It was getting dark and still no one came. She could see lights coming from all the other windows but there were no lights in her own home. She was hungry and cold and wanted her nice warm blanket! She hid under the stairs and shivered until morning.

For the next few weeks, each day was a frightening struggle to survive. There were some kind people who would leave food out but she was too small to fight the big cats, who took all the food. Then there were the big growlers who chased her up trees. One almost caught her and left a cut on her little paw. She hid under the stairs and licked her wound wondering why her people had left her. Had she been bad?

One day the weather turned especially cold. She decided to go to all the doors in the building and cry as loudly as she could — no one came.

Finally, at the top of the stairs, a door opened. It was a woman who bent over to pet her. She stood on her back paws and rubbed her little head against the woman’s face. The woman went inside and came back with a bowl of food and a warm blanket. She was so grateful! While she ate the food, the woman stroked her little head. When she was finished eating, she snuggled in the blanket until she was warm and went to sleep.

Everyday, for the next week, she came to the woman’s door and waited for her food. Everyday the woman came outside and brought her a bowl and petted her while she ate. Finally, one day the woman picked her up and brought her inside. She was so happy. It was warm and cozy and she rubbed the woman’s ankles purring. If only the woman would let her stay she would never go outside again!

She began to explore this new place. In one room she found a tree. It wasn’t like the trees outside — this one was smaller with low branches and shining things all over it. It had shining boxes all around it too. She walked around the tree sniffing. The woman wasn’t in the room and she wondered if she would get in trouble if she climbed this tree. Her curiosity got the better of her and she started up the trunk. She went out on an upper branch and sat there feeling very pleased with herself.

The woman came back in the room and started calling her. Would the woman get mad at her for climbing the tree and make her leave? She got scared. Just then, one of the shiny balls fell off the branch she was on and hit the floor with a crash. The woman looked up and was face to face with her in the tree. She just sat there and purred to let the woman know she was sorry. She was so afraid of being put outside. She let out one tiny little meow and the woman, who had been staring at her with her mouth open, started to laugh! The woman reached out and took her off the limb. She snuggled in the woman’s arms as the woman stroked her smooth little head.

“Merry Christmas little one!” the woman said. She blinked her big yellow eyes and purred.

Everyone enjoy the Holidays! Eat too much, sleep too much, laugh too much, sing off-key and give all of your loved ones (furry and smooth) hugs and kisses! I’ll miss you all and I’ll be back on Tuesday.

What an exquisitely delicate little face–such lovely markings and blue eyes! I can’t imagine why anyone would let any cat or kitten run loose in traffic, much less a kitten with obvious breeding. Thank you so much for rescuing this little lucky angel and giving her a nice safe home! Love her always!
