Tootsie Roll Kitty
This is Tootsie Roll Kitty shortly after we got her. She does love that basket. She almost a year old now and having her first Christmas with us, the tree is completely bare now up as high as she can jump.

As high as she can jump? I take it little Tootsie Roll doesn’t climb. My Taffy used to run down the hall and turn the light switch on with his back feet some kind of Martial Arts move.
You owe me a new keyboard (perferably one that doesn’t contain coffee) for that comment Susan!
Martial arts Taffy.
I thought there was a short in the electrical wiring till I saw the little stinker in action. He would run full speed jump and flip over in the air to hit the switch. Typical male he turned the light on but never off! Sorry about the key board. Did you ever hear you can disconnect the keyboard and wash it in the diswasher? I heard of it but never had the guts to try. If you do let me know how it works out!
That is so funny, Susan! My Juliet—somewhere over the bridge now—would always “unplug” electrical appliances. Everyone thought I was exaggerating until they saw her in action. She would put her teeth on the part of the plug that fits into the outlet and “pull”! I put bitter apple on them, because I was afraid she would electrocute herself, and that slowed her down a bit…(I swear my boss thought I was insane when I told him that I was late because my cat unplugged my alarm clock!!)
Oh my, Taffy and Juliet over the Rainbow Bridge together can you just imagine the mischief those two are getting into! I can hear God’s booming voice saying I said, Let there be light now knock it off you two!
haha! Juliet used to love to bite/chew things. A friend let me borrow Dale Carnegie’s book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” Well, when I came home one night, I noticed Juliet had chewed FANG marks all over the front cover of the paperback! I told my friend that perhaps Juliet was angry because she had no (kitty) friends and couldn’t really influence people….
Susan– hi, I posted my poem on yesterday’s photo if you would like to read it. Thanks for your interest!
Dear Paige,
I went back to yesterday’s posting and read your love letter about your dear Charley it was truly beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
That is like a cat whom I saw just before Christmas. She was MOST indignant at not being allowed to help with setting up the crib in the living room - when I asked, her humans told me that she had been taking the ornaments off the Christmas tree, and putting them goodness only knows where!
Ha ha!!!!!! Another crazy tortie!!!!! Gotta love them wild ways.
What the heck is a tortie???
Tortie is short for tortiseshell. It refers to their color, splotches of browns, reds, tabby and white on the fur. Usually totally asymetrical. About 90 something percent of tortiseshell cats are female. It’s just genetic.
I love how Torties always seem to have expressive faces. Love the name too!
I want one–please?
Darling torties! Tootsie sounds like another wild baby!
What a cute little face!
Tootsie is entirely too cute… and I adore the name!!
How absolutely adorable — love that face!
I love tootsie rolls!!!
Please tell the little kitten that I say Hi!!!!!
I love watching kittens with their first Christmas trees.
Ours were about 9 months old their first Xmas. We brought the tree home and put it in the stand but didn’t decorate it. Next morning it was lying on the floor. My husband ended up bolting the stand to a big piece of plywood to make a broader base, and that’s worked well ever since.
There is a German traditional rotating crib, where all the figures are just the right ‘paw’ size. My two darlings could never resist the moving figures…
Love her innocent little face!
A tree without broken/and or missing decoration doesn’t look right anyway, right, Tootsie?
Everything I see, becomes a Tootsie Roll to me FUZZ
Timberrrr! FUZZ
Isn’t she a sweetie? I love Torties.. I have two in my cat harem!
Tootsie Roll looks like she is about to pounce on something!
I saw a kitty in a basket
What you doing? I went and asked it.
Silly human, you’re so daft
The pretty kitty went and laughed.
Silly human, can’t you see
I’m resting before I attack the tree.
Love the poem!
keep ‘em coming, Ivory Bill!
Cute poem, Ivory Bill. May I ask, what state are you in? I know the Ivory bill bird is found in Arkansas.
I am betting Ivory Bill is from the UK.
Have to say it again IB, love your ditties
Great poem! I look forward to seeing your posts everyday.
Tootsie is so cute. And you kow you can never have just one.
**ASPCA SUCCESS STORY OF THE WEEK: WINNING THE OSCAR**
“I was born an animal lover, and always knew that I would one day get a dog,” muses pooch parent Laura Simpson. The New York City resident didn’t know exactly when that day would come, however.
During the month of May about 11 years ago, Laura had a strong urge to visit the ASPCA’s 92nd Street adoption facilities. “I wasn’t planning to get a dog right then,” she tells us. “I just wanted to go over on my lunch hour and check out the process.”
After a great interview with our adoptions staff, Laura met some of the available dogs—including Oscar, a little dog who was curled up in a ball and seemed frightened by the barking of the other dogs. “I instantly fell in love with him,” Laura says, and made arrangements to pick up him at the end of week.
That night, Laura couldn’t sleep. “I kept thinking about Oscar,” she remembers. The next morning, she decided to take the day off and bring him home as soon as the shelter opened.
“It was the best decision I ever made!” says the proud mom. “He lives like the king he deserves to be, and is part of my heart and soul. I cannot imagine my life without him. Thank you to the ASPCA staff for giving me my Oscar!”
And thank you, Laura, for giving him a wonderful forever home.
a tistket, a tasket,
a crazy kitty in a basket…
Great name—-she’s so sweet she hurts my teeth!
gazelles at the watering hole!
http://www.wavelit.com/index.asp?ch=Wildlife&sh=africam
there were some noisy birds there when I looked - Decibel, who fancies himself a bug, ferocious puma, came running and growling at the ruckus those birds were creating and now he is meowing at me as if to say, “Where’d they go, Mom; where’d my snack go??”
Way to go, Timmy!!
**Alert tabby saves family from fire**
Fri Dec 29, 8:07 AM ET
SYDNEY (Reuters) - An alert tabby cat saved an Australian family of four from a house fire by clawing at its owner’s face, emergency officials said Friday.
Timmy the tabby sprang into action by waking his unidentified owner when a mattress caught fire as the family slept early Friday in Cairns in Australia’s tropical north.
“The cat was probably the best smoke alarm system … it was clawing at the occupant’s face and got him up and out of bed,” Cairns fire service spokesman Robert White-Macfarlane told reporters.
The man was then able to wake his family and call for help.
White-Macfarlane said the fire was probably started by a cigarette but added that the home had suffered only minor damage because of the cat’s intervention.
Can you believe this one?
**Thirsty man sells beagle to buy beer**
Fri Dec 29, 8:06 AM ET
BERLIN (Reuters) - A thirsty German sold his 6-year-old step-daughter’s pet beagle to the owner of a bar to pay for beer, the Bild newspaper reported Friday.
The unemployed man offered to take the dog for a walk and then stopped at a bar where he convinced the owner to buy the 3-year-old dog for 40 euros ($53).
The man spent the proceeds quenching his thirst for beer. The bar owner has now returned the dog to its owner.
I see someone else loves reading the news of the weird.
haha! I read everything—I’m a news (and soft-news) junkie!
PET POISON ALERT: LIQUID POTPOURRI PACKS A PAINFUL PUNCH
Want a fresh and fragrant home? Before setting out that delicious-smelling potpourri simmer pot, please take heed. Many liquid potpourris contain essential oils and detergents that could prove hazardous to your furry companions, based on an analysis of calls to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center.
According to the ASPCA’s Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and senior vice president, the essential oils found in many of these products can cause irritation of the skin, gastrointestinal tract and mucous membranes. More significant injuries are typically a result of thermal burns or exposure to a specific type of detergent. Says Hansen, “A class of detergents known as cationics is usually responsible for severe ulceration of the membranes of the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract. Where there is contact with the skin, redness, swelling and extremely painful lesions can appear.” Symptoms of these exposures include drooling, vomiting, depression, metabolic disturbances and difficulty breathing from fluid on the lungs.
Although 10 percent of the liquid potpourri poisoning cases managed by the ASPCA since 2001 have included life-threatening effects, most animals make a full recovery if treated promptly. “However, it is important to note that treatment can be very extensive and may involve a lengthy hospitalization,” says Hansen.
And feline caretakers, please take note—cats are more likely to be at risk than dogs. “This is most likely because cats have greater access to the simmer pots, which are usually kept on countertops or other high-level surfaces,” explains Hansen. Most exposures occur when cats lap up heated liquid from the simmer pot, or when liquid spills on their fur from a leaky container.
To avoid exposing your pet to the dangers of liquid potpourri, ASPCA experts offer the following tips:
- Place potpourri simmer pots and unused liquid in rooms where pets cannot gain access.
- Consider using relatively safer alternatives, such as plug-in or solid air fresheners. (Do take care to use these in out-of-reach locations as well.)
- If you suspect your pet has been exposed to liquid potpourri, please call your veterinarian or the APCC’s emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for round-the-clock telephone assistance.
Susan—about the best friends pics from yesterday—not sure if you noticed there were 5 pics total…
http://news.yahoo.com/photos/ss/events/lf/122606booger
Thanks I thought there was only one photo. I did notice the only one that seemed happy was the guy the four legged critters all looked disgruntled.
Only a tortie could manage an expression that conveys total innocence, and impending mischief. Adorable!
Ok, lets hear about everyone’s New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day traditions/superstitions. My mom was raised in Spain, so when the clock strikes 12:00 on New Year’s Eve, the tradition is for everyone to eat 12 grapes for good luck—one for each month of the new year. And, I’ve heard from southerners that it is considered bad luck to wash clothes on New Year’s Day and I just heard that for good luck, your first visitor to walk into your home at the beginning of the year should be male. Such interesting superstitions….
We must have black eyed peas on New Years Day.. the more you eat the better luck you have… I believe this is a Southern US tradition… (Dad was from TX) I have kept it up though.. I make a crockpot full and invite everyone for a bowl!
and greens or cabbage for money for the new year (greens = “greenbacks”)….
Also ham hocks. My dad always put a quarter on a window sill that way you would have prosperity all year long. My great grandmother was from Scotland and she said the first through the door had to be a dark haired male. Hells Bells at my age any man with or without hair would be good luck! I might not let him go till Easter. My mom made me toss salt over my shoulder if I spilled any well I have a strange sence of humor when she told me that I tossed the shaker and all over my shoulder. Somehow she just didn’t think that was too funny.
You always crack me up, Susan! I never heard about the quarter. I think I’ll try that one, too. And I’ve heard to shake out your door mats before the New Year—to get rid of last year’s “dirt”.
Another old scotish thang is to never move the old broom to a new house. So many superstitions are just based on common sense. Never put a hat on a bed well of ocurse not someone might sit on it in the dark. Same way with that ladder one the person or paint can can be knocked off. I know of the black eyed peas, ham hocks and collard greens to be eaten on New Years Days I figure I am going to start a new one for plenty NY strip steak, baked potato loaded and asperagus that beats the heck out of the other.
The New Year’s tradition back here is to eat blackeyed peas with ham hocks and some cooked cabbage for luck. I can’t say, I ever had much luck come my way when I ate some! Happy New Year Dee & Susan and everyone else on TDK!
Thank you Renee and a very Happy New Year to you and yours.
With that food combination it wouldn’t be good luck for anyone standing near the other person.
Tootsie just wants to redecorate. It wouldn’t be a proper Christmas tree without that special feline touch: tooth marks on the ornaments, a few broken branches, and a little fur sprinkled all around. Now that’s a Christmas tree.
The name Tootsie Roll seems so appropriate for that beautiful little sweetie.

Hi, I’m enjoying the website with all its great kitty pics. One thing that struck me going back through a year’s worth of kittens was how many of them had been found abandonned. It seemed like at least half of the pics were rescued kittens! Just a suggestion, but since so many cat lovers hit this website, how about a prominent banner reminding folks how important it is to neuter their beloved pet cats? I’m sure there have been plenty of kittens were not lucky enough to end up pictured here, with loving homes. I don’t think such a message would detract at all from your site. Just what was going through my head- hope you find this buried comment. I couldn’t find another way to leave comments about the site and since my babies are adults I have no pics to submit. Regards!!!
THAT is a GREAT suggestion! ! ! I’ve noticed also that so many of these kittens were rescues. And thank goodness for the compassionate and cat-loving folks who have adopted all these innocent babies!
I think your idea of a reminder to have pets neutered is a VERY, VERY intelligent and thoughtful idea. Hope The Kittenmaster is willing to do this. Thanks for your compassionate idea.
I’m sure most of you have heard about this story, but here it is, just in case….

**Bob Barker saves L.A. Zoo elephant**
It’s a good week for animals in Los Angeles. Three Hollywood chimps are headed to an animal sanctuary and away from their abusive “trainer” Sid Yost, and one of the L.A. Zoo’s inhabitants, Ruby the elephant, is being rescued from her environs by none other than retiring Price is Right host Bob Barker.
Barker has donated $300,000 in order to have the 45 year-old African elephant moved from the L.A. Zoo to a sanctuary in San Andreas, California. The move is coming on the heels of the controversial death of another L.A. Zoo elephant that wasn’t treated for more than eight hours after he had begun exhibiting signs of distress. Barker, along with other animal rights activists, have been pleading for the close of the zoo’s elephant exhibit ever since. The cost of a new, larger habitat for the animals has been approved by the L.A. City Council, but activists say that it is still not enough. Barker, himself, plead before the council in February for the closure of the exhibit and has appeared before Congress to testify about the abuse suffered by circus elephants.
Domino used to chew on the books too. I was reading the paper one morning and felt a tug on it he was sitting on the floor chewing the bottom of the page. I have heard of Reader Digest but not that way. Dee what do you mean cats don’t influence people they turn us into their servants.
Shhhhhh–I can’t let them KNOW that!
Happy New Year everyone! I’ll see you all next year! (don’t you hate when people say that?!)
Happy New Year Dee!
Ah ma, I have to check my springs to see high they will let me jump. What better place to guage the height than by the tree.
I hope our TDKers and their loved ones have a Healthy Happy New Year. Yes, it is dorky but so what see y’all next year!
Happy New Year, All!!!
whoa! am i the only one whose alignment is off? the messages are overlapping! (I feel like Alice in wonderland)

HAPPY NEW YEARS TDKers!!!
I am betting Ivory Bill is from the UK.

If you REALLY want to help- it is the legislative group Doris Day founded- just a simple dollar from everyone who post here will help get low cost clinics for spaying and nutering. How about it guys?
omg! she looks just like my oldest cay when she was a kitten!!!!!!!!!!! now she’s 16.
omg. that face is irresistable…(is that how you spell it? i’m alittle slow today…)
My family is cajun so we always have red beans and rice. The beans are for luck and the rice is for prosperity (or is it the other way around?) It’s similar to the collard greens and hamhocks with black eyed peas, only it’s rice, red beans and sausage!
Where y’all from? I live just down the road from Lake Charles.
Y’all take care, and Happy New Year!
we’re from Crowley!!
My family is from Crowley, but my mom and I are in Fort Collins, Colorado
Her name was Claudia.
My wonderful little tortie is over the rainbow bridge now. She was amazing! Me son (when he was about 14) found her by the side of the road when he was riding his bike near the high school in Hillsboro NJ (where I used to live back then). She was hit by a car, but still alive. He picked her up and went from door to door asking whose cat she was. Sadly, people said she was a stray, probably dumped there by some uncaring person., She was around that neighborhood meowing for someone to feed her or take her in. No one did.
He put her into his baseball jacket, zipped it up and bicycled home. Since my ex and I were out doing some shopping, and during the time we were away, my son took great care to make sure she was comfortable.
I was shocked when I looked at her little body! She had a bloody little nose, and looked like she couldn’t get up. And yet she was purring so loudly when I took her little face in my hand and wiped the blood away from her little nose! What gratitude! I know that she was sure that I was going to save her. He roared “We can’t have another cat!” (I already had 1) “These animals are going o take over the house!” (Meaning there will be one more mouth to feed). I told him that I will NOT put this little puss out to die. If he wanted to, he would have to put her box out in the cold and live with the fact that he killed a poor little creature that needed out help. Well, with that said I guess he didn’t have the guts to do that. So I gathered my courage and took the poor little teen-aged baby to the vet.
The vet said she had 2 broken hips and he can either operate, or I could keep comfortable in the box lined with soft blankets, and that she could heal in a few weeks. It looked like there were no other internal injuries! So that’s what I did. Se purred for me when I came by. she purred for me when I picked her up to go potty (She wouldn’t soil herself where she lay — She meowed to be picked up and held over the kitty litter) She purred when I fed her, and gave her water. She got well after a few months — thank goodness!
She was the very best of kitties anyone can have! She lived to be 18 years old. She was devoted to me and I to her. When I divorced and moved to a neighboring town, she came along with me. She went missing just before she died. I moved to a I townhouse. She always stayed on the patio. She had arthritis and liked to lay on the sun to feel better. I thought that someone, must be pulling a prank, took her from her sunning spot on the patio one Sunday afternoon.
We searched and searched, but could not find her. I thought she was surely dead.
One June morning, I thought I heard something under my car that was parked in the garage. (we’d left the door open most of the day because it was so nice outside) I bent down and looked under the car an there was my old little girl, laying down, purring and looking at me! I scooped her up and saw that she was emaciated and could hardly stand upmon her own! I gave her water and something to eat. Took her to the vet. She was very weak, old and sick. With his care she lasted another 2 months. She was grateful the whole time! no matter what kind of discomfort or pain she had, she always had a purr form me!!. I will never forget Claudia!
Sorry for getting so long winded. Just needed to tell you about my precious little girl.
I know that Claudia is waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. She sounds very special.
What a beautiful life you gave her bless your kind heart.
has i read this it bring tear in my eyes.that was so touching.i have two cats myself.they are my life.we need alots more people like us in the world.love your story
I’m bawling, but I love it.
Tootsie is a totally adorable Tortie! And based on mine and various others, they love trees. (As well as,playing in water, as long as it is only paws that get wet!)
she’s super cute! i’m sure a half bare tree is worth it when you’ve got a sweetheart like that!
My parents have a Tortie, named “Mouthy.” She is at least “Sweet Sixteen,” but I don’t think that she is older than seventeen. And by the way, she is in terrific health!
Y’all take care, and have a Happy, Safe and Blessed New Year!
She is a cutie
tootsie roll is the youngest of our 5 cats. she is definately the baby of the family she is always in my lap purring her little heart out. thanks all for the kind words.
*~Candy from Chicago FuzZ~*
I love the name and she’s adorable!
Happy New Year!
Tootsie is such a cute girl. She looks so sweet in that basket. I love her little face. Hugs & kisses to you Tootsie.
Torties are soo adorable and have very unique personalities! I’m glad you have the patience for one! I have 3 myself, named after candy as well. Reeses is by far the most tortie-like; she won’t take any crap from the other two and she hisses at everyone but me. But she also can be very loving when I’m the only one around. Congrats on such a beautiful kitty!
Ahhh torties! Me luvs ‘em! And the whole “flipping over” to flip on the switch–priceless! They’re nervy, edgy, nagging, or “insistant”. Torties are wunnerful.
My mother adopted a torite (older) that some idiot threw away behind a Bonanza restraunt. She was living in a hole she dug under a shed. No claws and she was already fixed! No one claimed her and we never saw any ads in the paper. Here the papers give free ads to lost & found pets. My mother now says Fluffy is the sweetest most gentle cat. The cat will put her paw up on my mothers face and “paw” it as if to say Thank you for rescuing me! My mother is getting older, but she knows if anything happens to her I will gladly take care of her cats. She is a tortie but not the color as Tootsie Roll. Fluffly is more calico colored and has a black Zorro mask. But I noticed all torties have very round large heads, and big eyes and a cute “pug” nose. My tortie IS the color of Tootsie. I really love those cats!
What a sweet little baby!
I love Tootsie! What a cutie pie.
I have a tortie named Mallorie. I adopted her 3 months ago from a rescue center in Nashville. She is the most wonderful little darling. We are in love. She’s on my lap now sound asleep and of course - I keep trying to find something new on the net to do to keep from waking her.
I had two torties before Mallorie. MollyMarie and Gwenna were tortie sisters. They and their mommy, Bella have gone over the rainbow bridge where I know MollyMarie is twisting, jumping and chasing butterflies. I miss them.
Tootsie is one of our funniest cats. We have a few more pictures of her, like one in our tree and one of her in my pocket in the camo pants.
i really love tootsie so can you tell me what months the other pictures are on
what……………..the kitten is vary cut.
