Christmas, and the month or so after, is a great time to adopt pets. It’s hard for people like up to think that there are “unwanted” kittens, but there are millions, not to mention dogs, in this country. Many people buy a pet for someone for Christmas and the family either will not or cannot keep the pet for some reason. If you are able and want to take on a new pet, this time is an excellent opportunity - the shelters will be overflowing in January and February - and unfortunately any time there is a large deployment from a military base. At times like this, it is even possible to adopt pure-bred animals, if that is your thing, that were bought as gifts. If you’re looking for a new pet, please adopt and head out to those shelters in the next couple of months. (((If my husband would let me, I’d probably go out and get 2 kittens AND a dog, but……… I don’t think that will be happening any time soon! ;) )))

i agree jenniwin it brakes my heart to think about all those cats, kittens, dogs and puppies at the shelter my family adoptid 2 dogs from the shelter we had both of them for along time but then one of them ran away and the oher one died of old age so we got 2 new dogs one of them the owners didn’t want it because it ran away and got fixed we also got 2 cats from the shelter and it just makes me mad that so many people get kitttens or puppies for people for their birthdays or christmas and then they just take them to the shelter a couple days later

Take a look at the two beautiful cats in the photo at this site. The article is very confusing…did the cats have a home originally? And how is being abandoned not considered abuse/neglect? And if they were starving, how were they not abused?

To me this kind of abandonment is worse that turning the cats out on the street. At least on the street they could have fended for themselves, but to be locked up in a building eith no food is worse than cruel. I have strong feelings about this one as when I was a child we adopted a siamese that had been left in similar circumstances. The original owner abandoned her two cats while her husband was deployed by the military. She left a bag of food that they had to tear into and the cats learned to flush the toilet for water. Fortunately a neighbor realized the cats were locked in the house before they starved to death after the food ran out. Heathcliff was an awesome cat and yes his companion was Kathy. We were lucky enough to get him and friends of the neighbor took Kathy.

I think that if they could animal cruelty charges would be filed in this case, but it is up to animal control as to whether they will follow through. It makes me sad to see this as I had a white cat that was catnapped right from under my nose when I lived in Florida.

**Bank issues credit card to cat**
2 hours, 32 minutes ago

SYDNEY, Jan 4 (Reuters Life!) - An Australian bank has apologized for issuing a credit card to a cat after its owner decided to test the bank’s identity security system.

The Bank of Queensland issued a credit card to Messiah the cat when his owner Katherine Campbell applied for a secondary card on her account under its name.

“I just couldn’t believe it. People need to be aware of this and banks need to have better security,” Campbell told local media on Thursday.

The bank said the cat’s card had been canceled. “We apologize as this should not have happened,” it said in a statement.

I found this at another site—thought it was very heart-warming…

Years ago, my wife and I adopted Fluffy, a longhaired, pure white kitten. When we rented a “No Pets” apartment, my parents took Fluffy for us. They lived in the country and she had free roam about their place. She came home daily, but obviously preferred roaming the countryside.

My dad had emergency surgery to repair an inflamed kidney and had a long and painful recovery. When he came home from the hospital, Fluffy came in, jumped up on his bed and laid her right front paw on the bandage over his surgical scar. She stayed there, except to eat or go outside (no litter box), but then came right back in and back to her place. When Dad had recovered enough to sit on the living room sofa, Fluffy sat at his side all day, every day, often putting her paw on his bandaged incision. When he recovered enough to begin normal activity, Fluffy began returning to her daily travels, but returning to his side at night. Once he got back to his pre-surgery activity level, she returned completely to her daily and nightly wanderings. But, when she thought he had needed some extra love and affection, she never left his side.

**Cures for Kitty Crimes**
By Cricky Long for The Daily Cat

Cats often surprise us, and usually it’s in a good way, such as with an affectionate head butt on the ankle or companionship just when we need it. But sometimes they can rub us the wrong way. For some reason, this usually happens after a long day when all you want to do is sit down, relax and snuggle with your kitty. Only the moment you start to unwind, you discover that your kitty wasn’t such a good feline today.

It could be a torn curtain, a soiled rug, an overturned plant or some other tell-tale evidence. In that moment, you might think your cat is out to get you. But it is only following natural instinct. It’s up to you to channel your cat’s energy in a more positive direction.

According to feline behavioral consultant Mieshelle Nagelschneider, “Cats will repeat behaviors that give them a reward, but they will stay away from behaviors that give them a negative experience.” This means you can change your cat’s behavior by providing appealing alternatives, while simultaneously laying down deterrents to prevent your cat from exhibiting undesirable behaviors. Here’s how.

1. Never reprimand or use physical punishment of any kind on your cat When you reprimand your cat, your cat will learn to associate you, rather than the act, with the punishment.

For example, if your cat soils outside the litter box, pushing your cat’s nose in the soiled spot is not going to do anything except stress out your cat. Conversely, according to Nagelschneider, you can stop your cat from eliminating in an inappropriate spot by playing with your cat in that location. This activity, which will trigger your cat’s prey drive, should put an end to the potty naughtiness, since cats usually will not soil where they eat, hunt or play. However, you must also figure out what is causing your cat to eliminate outside the litter box, and fix that problem. More often than not, litter box aversion stems from the type of litter you’re using, the location of the box or its sanitary condition.

2. Never punish your cat after the fact Felines are smart, but no cat is going to be able to associate punishment doled out a minute or more after the “kitty crime” took place.

For example, if you come home and find that your cat unraveled a roll of toilet paper throughout your house or decided to play in your laundry hamper, nothing you do to your cat in that moment will deter your pet from going after the TP or the hamper the next day.

However, there are a couple of things you can do to prevent this type of undesired behavior, which usually stems from boredom. First, make the problem areas inaccessible for your cat. Then, save your feline’s favorite toys for when you are about to leave so it has something to play with while you are gone. You may also want to hide treats and toys so it can hunt for them while you are out of the house. Also, try to make sure your cat is getting enough playtime while you are home.

3. Never get caught at the scene of the crime — or punishment Keep the action and the consequence very clear for your kitty. Allow no room for misinterpretation.

Let’s say you want your cat to stop jumping up on the table. If you scream every time your cat jumps on the table, your cat is more likely to think you are nuts than perturbed by its actions. (A really smart cat may even learn to jump up on the table only when you are not present.) But if you put something on the table to deter your cat, such as a motion-triggered noisemaker or any kind of unpleasant-feeling surface, like crumpled foil or bubble wrap, your cat should have no problem associating the act of jumping on the table with the unpleasant result. You then won’t be perceived by your cat as the screaming nutcase or the bad guy.

4. Call the experts If your cat suddenly begins to exhibit unusual behavior for no apparent reason, take it to the vet for a checkup. A medical issue could be at the root of the problem. If your pet receives a clean bill of health, yet you are still unable to resolve its behavioral issues, call in a cat behaviorist for help. Your vet or local cat rescue organization may be able to provide you with a referral.

**12 Orphaned Pups Find Surrogate For Milk**

POSTED: 9:37 am PST January 4, 2007

A western New York family had a crisis on its hands when their dog died after giving birth to 14 puppies.

A dozen of the Newfoundland-Saint Bernard puppies survived, but they needed milk.

Luckily, the Pufpaff family found a surrogate. A friend’s dog who just had puppies was pressed into service.

Laura Pufpaff said that within hours, the motherless pups went from near death to completely healthy.

The friend’s dog is now mothering 20 puppies — her own eight plus the 12 orphans.

Family and friends are pitching in to help. Things can get crazy at feeding time, when laundry baskets are used to lug the pups around.

What an eye-opening article! It’s something many people would never think could happen. And how great is it that Sophia was trying so diligently to help her sister!

**Paper Shredders Risks and Pets**
By: Erica Cacioppo

Hi! My name is Erica Cacioppo. On May 26th, 2006 my lab/pit mix, Shelby had a horrific accident involving a paper shredder.

I woke at 6 AM to a horrible sound. It was Shelby screaming! It was a sound I have never heard and can’t get out of my head. I ran downstairs and asked my husband Gino, who was holding her, what was wrong. Before he could answer I saw the most horrific sight of my life, Shelby’s tongue stuck inside our paper shredder. Our other dog Sophia, thinking Shelby was being attacked was pulling relentlessly and with all her might on the shredder, not knowing she was making matters worse. Even though in shock of the situation we worked as fast as we could to get Shelby to the vet. We had to pry Sophia off and put her in the bathroom. In that time Shelby had bit her own tongue off. I suppose in animal instinct.

Gino got Shelby in the car as I got dressed and got together our purse and wallet. This all happened in a matter of 5 minutes. Our closest animal clinic was an agonizing 20 minutes away, at which time Shelby was bleeding profusely. We got there just in time. She started going into convulsions just before being put under for surgery. During the operation she got between 40 to 50 stitches and loss her entire tongue. After the surgery the vet, Dr. Emo, told us she didn’t know how Shelby would be able to eat and drink, as she has never seen or heard of an injury like this. At this point we had decided to put her to sleep. Thank God the vet did extensive research and found a study on dogs with the same injury and they adapted to the situation over time and had the same attitude and a great quality of life. We then decided to give Shelby the chance she deserved.

It paid off! She is very happy! Shelby getting her voice back was no problem, 2 weeks later she was barking at the neighbor dog again. She can eat wet food very easily with our help and as of mid June is doing okay with trying to learn to eat dry food again. She is drinking water through a syringe that we give to her. She lets us know when she wants water. She is starting to learn how to scoop up water on her own and on June 17th ate her 1st rawhide that she stole from her sister! She still drools some, but has learned to wipe her own mouth on towels we have in the house and outside for her. We have no doubt she will completely adapt with some time and effort. She’s our miracle baby!

We want people to know that this happens and that if it does you can save your baby! If you are in a similar situation please e-mail this web site and they will contact me and I can help you with any questions you may have. I beg you to please tell everyone you know and please UNPLUG your shredder or GET RID OF IT!!!! You NEVER want to go through what we did!!!!!! It was utterly horrible. We couldn’t eat or sleep. We have bad nightmares about what happened. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!

Thank you,
Erica Cacioppo, Shelby’s owner

Valerie reminds me of a foster kitten we named “Tripod”, but on her it was a front leg that was golden while the rest was grey. I don’t think she was polydactal, though. Either way, the more the merrier!

This is the sweetest picture. Looks like a regular kid picture with one not looking at the camera. The paw on the shoulder of the other kitten is precious. It looks like Mikey is telling Timmy a secret.

Alright, who put a picture of 3 bad tabbies on this site?? You bring those bad little tabbies over here at once, I need to teach them how to behave like proper little tabbies. Though I will have to pet them and love them first, then perhaps we will get around to acting like proper bad little things.
