How loving and sweet of you to open your house to a pregnant momma. They are adorable and lucky to have found you!

To Catrancher in IA, my mom and I suspect we have a Maine Coon. When I got her, I only saw the mom, not the dad. Could I email you pictures to have you give me your opinion?

Good morning all TDK’ers. I hope that you are well.

I’ve got the best story in the world for you. My friend in NY took her class to Orlando, FL. They all stayed in a hotel. A pregnant stray was hanging around. Naturally the class fed her. Then she disappears. One of the maintenance men decided he would do the right thing - so he took her to a church parking lot and abandoned her. The class asked about her and learned her fate. My friend drove to the church - and there was the cat - this was at least one whole day after she disappeared. One of the students called her boyfriend in Cambride MA and asked if it would be ok to bring her home. He was ok with it. So the cat flew on the plane and went to Cambridge. She had the litter. After eigth weeks I then flew from FL to NY where my friend lives - we rented a car and I drove to MA where we got one of the kittens. All the kittens found homes. Talk about a happy ending. And boy are those cats happy.

W www wow eeee!!! What a fantastic picture

Sorry this is so long, I couldn’t edit it any further. I only hope you get a chuckle.

DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from shredding on the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant and cough it up on the carpeting.

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to annoy these vile oppressors, I once again knocked a vase of flowers from the highest reachable shelf, must try ripping the feather pillow over their bed (again).

DAY 762 - Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep depriving, incessant pleas for food at ungodly hours of the night.

DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in
attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was …Hmmm. Not working according to plan…

DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called “shampoo.” What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth and the tiny bit of flesh under my claws.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of “allergies.” Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant. He has mastered their frightful tongue (something akin to mole speak) and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured.

But I can wait; it is only a matter of time….

**WWF: Coffee threatens Indonesian animals**
Tue Jan 16, 9:36 PM ET

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Coffee beans exported to the West are being illegally grown inside an Indonesian national park, threatening the habitat of endangered tigers, elephants and rhinos, the WWF said Wednesday.

Around 19,600 tons of coffee from the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park on Sumatra Island are mixed with legally grown beans by local traders and exported each year, according to the global conservation organization.

“If this trend of clearing park land for coffee isn’t halted, the rhinos and tigers will be locally extinct in less than a decade,” Nazir Foead, WWF-Indonesia’s Director of Policy and Corporate Engagement, said in a statement.

“We think even the world’s most committed coffee drinkers will find this an unacceptable price to pay for their daily caffeine buzz.”

WWF said several Western food and drink companies were buying the illegal beans.

The group said it had told the companies of its findings. Some denied buying the tainted coffee, while others were discussing how to avoid buying it in the future, the group said.

Bukit Barisan Selatan is one of the few protected areas where Sumatran tigers, Sumatran elephants and Sumatran rhinos coexist. It is one of the most important habitats left for the three, all endangered or critically endangered species, the WWF said.

Indonesia is the world’s second-largest exporter of robusta coffee, which is often used in instant coffee and packaged coffee sold in supermarkets.

**Surprise chimp born at La. sanctuary**
2 hours, 2 minutes ago

SHREVEPORT, La. - In a mysterious bit of monkey business, a female at a chimpanzee sanctuary has given birth, despite the fact that the facility’s entire male chimp population has had vasectomies.

Now managers at Chimp Haven are planning a paternity test for the seven males who lived in a group with Teresa, a wild-born chimpanzee in her late 40s who had the baby girl last week.

Workers have started collecting hair samples from the chimps for testing. Once they identify the father, it’s back to the operating room for him.

Chimp Haven managers said they knew something was up when Teresa was missing during morning rounds on January 8. Later in the day, she appeared with a newborn chimpanzee in her arms.

“Well, we were all just a little bit surprised when we heard the news,” said Linda Brent, a spokeswoman for Chimp Haven.

The baby chimpanzee was named Tracy and she and her mother are doing fine, Brent said.

Teresa had 10 other offspring before retiring to Chimp Haven over a year ago. This is her first baby in 13 years.

It’s also the first chimpanzee born at the sanctuary although officials there hope there will be no more accidents.

Chimp Haven provides long-term care for chimpanzees who are no longer needed for laboratory research. It was established by a group of primatologists and is located on 200 forested acres about 20 miles southwest of Shreveport. The first chimpanzee residents began arriving in 2005, according to the sanctuary’s Web site.

Dee, do you remember that one large lady (so I am) that sang and when she asked what she could do to improve? Simon said, leave the room I was thinking of many shots of botox to the vocal cords. I wonder if those people really think they can sing or if they are just looking for their time in the spotlight no matter how awful they are.

The one that I thought was such a dufus was the guy in the orange tee shirt that couldn’t sing so broke into some strange dance he was double trouble. I believe in encouranging children with praise if what they do is praise worthy if not give encouragment to find something else. But to build a kid up so the world can slap them upside the head is child cruelty on the parents part. The one that has been giving vocal lessons that couldn’t hit a note if he had a baseball bat was a perfect example.

**Animal party bans mouse poison in parliament**
1 hour, 45 minutes ago

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch Party for Animals, which entered parliament for the first time last November, has forbidden the laying of poison to deal with a mouse infestation in its offices, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

The party, which campaigns for animal rights and compassionate farming, will only allow humane traps in the parliament wing where its offices are housed, allowing trapped mice to be released unharmed, the daily De Telegraaf reported.

The Dutch parliament, or Binnenhof, which is centered around a cluster of medieval buildings with turrets and a moat, has a lingering problem with vermin, the paper said.

It added one Christian Democrat politician joked he had strewn bread crumbs around before handing over his office to the Party for Animals.

The party says it is the first animal rights party to be elected to parliament anywhere in the world. It won two seats in last year’s general election.

Food for thought… this was a rather large dog. How did anyone get this dog to sit still long enough to bury it. Maybe it was a case in which someone accidentally hit it, knocked it unconscious and simply assumed that it was dead. I would definitely like to give the person the benefit of the doubt.

Tinafish—I wonder the same thing everyday. The whole nature vs. nurture debate, I guess. And are they insane, or evil?? And , of course, it hits me extra hard when the abuse is perpetrated upon the least forceless; animals, children, the elderly and the infirm. People always suggest the idea of giving a pet to a young child to teach it responsibility (when everyone knows that mom and dad are going to be doing all of the grunt work), I believe young children should have a pet to teach it empathy—something that is sorely lacking in many people today.

In honor of “Lazarus”, I’m posting this very bittersweet story I found, about another mastiff dog.

**BLADE GUIDES STRAY DOGS TO SAFETY**

by Deborah

My best friend, Blade Runner Sweetboy, a beautiful English mastiff, passed away last September. All animal lovers can understand what life has been like for me since his death. I was fortunate, though, to have five other dogs to comfort me.

In 1996, before I adopted Blade, I had been going through a traumatic divorce in which I had a breakdown and felt like I didn’t want to live anymore. The very next week after my marriage ended, my dog, Nikko, died. I didn’t know how I was going to survive all the losses.

My oldest brother sent me a check and told me to go on a journey and find a dog like the one I’d lost. I came across the mastiff breed, which was just like Nikko. When I arrived on a farm about an hour from my home, the dog, whom I would name Blade, my angel with fur, greeted me. Since that day, Blade has become my best friend.

Although I love my dogs, none of them could take the place of Blade. I had him before all of them. A friend of mine thought he would get me a small puppy, hoping another dog would ease the pain of losing Blade. Unfortunately I felt resentment toward the puppy and asked my friend to take the dog back. He understood my grief and granted my request. I cried day and night.

After Blade’s death last year, I still ventured to the park and took one of my other dogs or went to the stores Blade and I used to go to, hoping to feel the same bond I had with him.

A month after Blade died, I was at the park and a big golden retriever ran after me and jumped in my car. He was so friendly and wouldn’t get out of my back seat. I tried to locate his home but with no luck.

This stray dog came home with us and stayed a week until I found a sign with his picture on it, hanging on the stop sign near the park. His human companions were so thrilled to get him back.

When I got home from returning the first retriever, another golden retriever was on my front lawn. I thought it was my neighbor’s but when I got to his door and saw his two dogs inside, I knew this must be a different stray dog who had gotten out of her fence.

This dog, too, stayed a week until finally, I saw a sign with her picture on it. Her human companions were shocked that their dog was at my house because she lived over five miles away and was a trained police dog. I cried when I returned her because in my heart I felt that Blade was somehow telling these strays to come to me, where they would be cared for until their homes were located.

I know it sounds crazy but after those two scenarios, I felt content that Blade was still protecting me and other dogs.

2007-01-17 19:55:47

Dee, You are killing me today! What a heartwarming, sweet, tale about Blade the dog. My lab/chow mix (Winter) is very sick with cancer. She is at home resting comfortably and we are waiting for the inevitable. I cry daily as Winter’s tail wags a little less everyday. All of the cats (5) and Tallulah (the jack russell) are all hovering and staying very close to Winter.

Petey steals my glasses and I looked all over for them yesterday morning. They were bent up so I am not sure if he did that or if I stepped on them at 5:30AM and didn’t realize it. He tries to snatch the glasses off of my face I think he works for Lenscrafters and is trying to drum up more business.

That is so funny, Susan! Atticus knocks my contact lens case off of the bathroom vanity all the time. Do you think they are trying to prevent us from seeing the destruction they may have caused?

I think he assosciates my glasses to reading my book which he this is his nemissis. Luckily the frame is silver metal so he can’t chew but this is twice they have been bent so they sit diagonal on my face. I tried to straighten them out this morning as my bro was taking me grocery shopping and I looked like the dork of the century the way they were sitting.

I have to replace my ear pieces once a year because of teeth marks. It’s a great way to wake me up. they go for the glasses on my nightstand and chew em up! bad kitties. I know now to keep only capped bottled water on the nightstand after several mishaps! (I KNOW they do this on purpose to wake me up!)

I think your kitties don’t want you to leave the house.

Ha, if I don’t leave I cannot come with his treats and food. I still think he is taking kick backs from Lenscrafters.

Petey gets a half a can of wet food when I have breakfast and the other half at dinner time. He always has a bowl of dry food and water. When he wakes me up by rubbing his face all over mine and flipping my head back like a Pez dispenser he just wants me up so he can play.

**Escaped Chimp Gets Snack, Cleans Bathroom**
By Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - An escaped chimpanzee at the Little Rock Zoo raided a kitchen cupboard and did a little cleaning with a toilet brush before sedatives knocked her out on top of a refrigerator.

The 120-pound primate, Judy, escaped yesterday into a service area when a zookeeper opened a door to her sleeping quarters, unaware the animal was still inside.

As keepers tried to woo Judy back into her cage, she rummaged through a refrigerator where chimp snacks are stored. She opened kitchen cupboards, pulled out juice and soft drinks and took a swig from bottles she managed to open.

Keeper Ann Rademacher says Judy went into the bathroom, picked up a toilet brush and cleaned the toilet. Rademacher says the 37-year-old Judy was a house pet before the zoo acquired her in 1988, so she may have been familiar with housekeeping chores. Judy wrung out a sponge and scrubbed down the fridge.

It took a couple of tries, but the zoo sedated the chimp, who fell asleep on top of the refrigerator with half a loaf of cinnamon-raisin bread she had pulled out of the freezer.

The zoo veterinarian gave Judy a drug to bring her around. Rademacher says Judy was groggy but fine after the episode.

The zoo says there was no danger Judy would get out of the primate keepers service area and onto zoo grounds.
