Eenie, Menie, Miney & Mo

Eenie, Menie, Miney and MoI just recently decided to volunteer as a Foster Mom at my local Humane Society. This is my first brood - I received a mother and her four kittens when they were about four weeks old. At first I could not tell the three gray babies apart, but the white one with gray spots stood out, so I named them Eenie, Menie, Minie, and the stand-out is Mo. Before too long their different markings (mostly noses) and personalities became apparent. Eenie has an all pink nose, Menie has an all gray and cinnamon nose and Miney’s nose is part pink and part gray. As they grew, I also found that Menie and Mo were developing softer and longer fur. They are four crazy bundles of energy and love and I have truly enjoyed my first experience as a foster mom.

My cat is gray, and while I love all cats, I think I am a little partial to gray ones. Give them a big group hug for me and kiss each one of thier different colored noses for me.

When I lived in Augusta there was a pond with about 15 Mallard ducks and one lone goose. My apartment was not noticable from the pond but somehow they found out. Each morning they would waddle their way over in a line to my patio where they would partake of the days fare I put out for the birds and squrriels. When they finished eating they would drink out of the two bowls of water and they walk back up the hill to the pond. They came back in the early evening for dinner. I started buying loaves of bread and would feed them that. The goose got so used to me he/she would eat the bread or popcorn right out of my hand. When I started taking my young neice down to the pond they would wait at the top of the hill every afternoon for us and escort us to the far end of the pond to a swing. I felt like Dr. Dolittle with all of them honking and quacking around us.

**Mom Induces Labor So Husband Can Attend Game**

POSTED: 12:56 pm EST January 21, 2007

CHICAGO — Chicago school teacher Colleen Pavelka knows how much her husband loves the Bears. Apparently, she loves him even more.

Colleen chose to have the birth of their second child induced a few days early so Mark Pavelka could attend Sunday’s NFC Championship showdown between the Bears and the New Orleans Saints.

The baby was due Monday. But when Colleen went in for an appointment Friday afternoon, her doctors told her she could opt for an early delivery. She decided to do so.

After nearly six hours of labor, 8-pound, 9-ounce Mark Patrick Pavelka was born Friday night.

Colleen Pavelka plans to catch the game on the plasma screen TV in her hospital room, while baby Mark Patrick is bundled up in the Bears receiving blanket his grandmother bought him for Christmas.

**Pet Shop Owner Creates Beer for Dogs**

Jan 22, 8:38 AM (ET)

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - After a long day hunting, there’s nothing like wrapping your paw around a cold bottle of beer. So Terrie Berenden, a pet shop owner in the southern Dutch town of Zelhem, created a beer for her Weimaraners made from beef extract and malt.

“Once a year we go to Austria to hunt with our dogs, and at the end of the day we sit on the verandah and drink a beer. So we thought, my dog also has earned it,” she said.

Berenden consigned a local brewery to make and bottle the nonalcoholic beer, branded as Kwispelbier. It was introduced to the market last week and advertised it as “a beer for your best friend.”

“Kwispel” is the Dutch word for wagging a tail.

The beer is fit for human consumption, Berenden said. But at euro1.65 ($2.14) a bottle, it’s about four times more expensive than a Heineken.

I flew one year with my cat Shadow to MO on 10/31 she was all black luckily no one saw her. When we stopped in St. Louis to take on more passengers and cargo they loaded cases of white mice. That had to be one interesting flight in the cargo hold.

German shepherd defended Bay Area owner; ‘Buffy’ may lose a leg

Updated: 2:02 p.m. ET Jan 12, 2007

OAKLAND, Calif. - A dog named Buffy was seriously wounded after being shot defending her owner during a robbery.

The German shepherd leapt into action after Will Bartley arrived at his Oakland home after work, and the dog ran out to greet him. At about the same time, a gunman approached and demanded Bartley’s wallet.

As Bartley complied, Buffy lunged at the mugger, who opened fire on the dog. Bartley wasn’t hurt, but doctors say there’s a 50-50 chance that Buffy could lose one of her legs.

It’s not clear if Buffy bit the gunman before he fled.

This could elicit a tear or two…

Diane Klajbor in Milwaukee, Wisconsin notes that she was pretty sure she was a “dog” person. Her beloved golden retriever, Lady had been the light of her life for fourteen years. Lady had cemented Diane’s love for dogs and her passing was particularly difficult. When it was time to bring another new friend into her home though, it wasn’t a dog that Diane chose. She told herself that with the house empty most of the day it was more practical to find a cat to adopt.

Slippers, a 6 year-old ragdoll was the chosen feline. Diane notes that it took no time at all before they were fast friends. She thought there was something special about this cat. Then a particular incident may her certain.

Slippers had been living with Diane for a few weeks and was curled up in a corner of the couch while Diane watched television. She was watching a show about angels and how they arrived in moments of great need such as the loss of a loved one and a thought occurred to her. She looked over at Slippers and asked, “Did Lady send you to me?” Slippers head popped up and she looked Diane directly in the eyes, holding her gaze as she reached out with a paw and placed it in the center of her hand.

Diane says that this was when she knew that Lady, her beloved dog had sent her Slippers and that this lovely cat was meant to be her new buddy. This was also when Diane became an equal opportunity animal lover, loving dogs and cats just the same.

Q: “Why does my cat suddenly race around when there’s nothing there?”

A: Ah yes, the 5 O’clock Crazies! Or the “Zooms.” There are a number of names for this phenomenon, but you can rest assured there’s nothing wrong with your cat. Some behaviorists believe that house cats that no longer “work” for a living, the way their hunting ancestors did, tend to have a large amount of pent-up energy. And when this energy reaches “critical mass,” the cat explodes in a burst of activity that might be racing solo around the house, dashing up stairs, or whatever cleverness kitty can devise.

Comment by karin from SF
2007-01-22 19:28:00

My kitty has the “zoomies” a lot as he is an indoor kitty. Since both of us work, we don’t always get to play with him. Sometimes when we are walking from the bedroom to the the kitchen or to the living room, he zooms right in front or along side.

**Feeling Low? Could Be From ‘Blue Monday’**

POSTED: 8:16 am PST January 22, 2007

Feeling down this Monday?

You’re not alone, according to a psychologist at Cardiff University, who has declared Jan. 22 Blue Monday.

Dr. Cliff Arnall said on the news Web site icWales that a mathematical formula shows how the confluence of post-Christmas fatigue, holiday bills, bad weather and failed resolutions can make people depressed.

The formula is: 1/8W+(D-d)3/8xTQMxNA.

The site said the factors are W for weather, D for debt from Christmas bills, d for monthly salary, T for time since Christmas. Q is the failure to keep a resolution or quit a bad habit, M stands for motivation and NA is the need to take action.

“The truth is a lot of people feel down at this time and a lot of people have depression as well, particularly men, and they don’t want to talk about it,” Arnall said.

Four times the fun! That is so nice that you are willing to foster these cute kitties. I could not be a foster as I would want to keep them all. That would drive my husband nuts. :-)

Cuteness!

I want to try fostering. I wonder if i could foster a pregnant cat now that i all ready have my little Aeryn. I think though it may be better to foster singletons at first till my cat is used to other cats. then maby bring in a pregnant cat at a later time.
