Portia
Portia came from my inlaw’s farm, where I caught her in the barn. I’m not quite sure how old she is in this picture, but she enjoyed her kitten milk. Now she loves to drink water from the kitchen and bathroom faucets, and jumps on the washer and plays with the water when it’s filling up.274 Comments »

Got Milk? Fuzz!
I think your kitten is so beautiful..im a cat lover i have several cats …Im so glad theres still people out there with compassion for lil animals….
so am i,i love cats i have alot this kitten just happens to be sssoooooooo cute
What a beautiful little girl! I look like that after my kitten milk too!!
Looks like a little goatie (however you spell it) hehehe. So precious!!!!!!!!
Portia.. that is so aristocratic! And she deserves it; she looks very distinguished (even with the traces of milk on her chin).
Is she a long-haired kitty?
it is aristocratic! I’ll bet she was named after Portia in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice!
Just as my late Juliet was named after the “Juliet” of Romeo and Juliet. (because she was filled with passion, not because I thought she would ever stab herself! haha!)
My Desdemona was so named because I knew she would grow up to be so beautiful that everyone would be jealous of her; my little Miranda was so named because some thought she was a boy, initially. There is a wealth of names to be had for our noble beasties in the works of Sir William–
Very true! And my Gabriel was named after Gabriel Garcia Marquez, for his sense of wonderment, and Emily was named after Emily Dickinson, because she is crazy…
And of course Atticus from To Kill A Mocking Bird one presumes.
Whoops, forgot about poor Atticus. Named after my favorite character in my favorite book and movie.
Now my Sylvester’s name comes from the Warner Bros cartoon - Sylvester and Tweety.
My black and white boy is named D’Artagnan, in part because of the markings on his face (he looks like he has a moustache and goatee) and in part because of his swashbuckling demeanor. Of course, our older cat thinks that we should have named him Beelzebub
!
Calpurrnia is called after Julius Caesar’s wife - the trials that woman had to endure in being the wife of Caesar. Also, I just thought I was clever. Cal cuz she’s a calico, purr because she’s always got a purr for her Mom, and nia to tie up any random loose ends. I had run across the name in one of the many many books I devour and thought that with a second ‘r’ in there it would be a good kitty name. Next thing I know, I am saving my sweet girl from a visit to the animal shelter. A guy I worked with was getting rid of her for this woman he was seeing - can you imagine?!
but since Decibel has come into our lives, Calpurrnia is called Auntie. Go figure…
I had an Ophelia, who was as beautiful as could be. I named her that partly because she was a little crazy, but mostly because the name means “helper”, and she definatly was a helper.
thank u, yes she is a long hair
Such a sweet, tiny ball of fluff.
Portia is precious
Awww Portia…….come to me Portia. *puts Portia VERY GENTLY into her backpack*
So precious!
Your backpack must be getting pretty full with all of your recent pickups!!
I empty it every night though.
I should hope so. Poor liitle babies all scrunched in there together! But I understand the compulsion and am tempted to do likewise.
I should hope so! Poor little babies all scrunched in there together! However, I am temped by the same compulsion-I sooo understand.
I understand your backpack — as my greatest ambition in life is to become a “cat lady”
Should it then be called the CatPack?
ahhhh little Portia - what a ball of furr. Her little milk beard!!! hahaha
kitten fever !!!!
Is there such a thing as “too cute ???”
Not on this board :)….I think I need one of those backpacks??
Well actually it is called cute overload and in some cases (people with weak hearts) it might be fatal
Portia you are a tiny sweetheart. Never mind the backpack, you would snuggle nicely in my sweatshirt
there is a website called http://www.cuteoverload.com
It is a cute site.
OK, that picture is just waaaaayyyy to cute
Portia is such a little bity sweetie! She short and sweet and fuzzy-wuzzy! She looks very petite. What a beutiful kitty angel.
Oh, what a cutie. She’s an adorable little ball. I may have to fight Huddy’s Mama for her.
(sneaks up behinds Huddy’s mama to play with Portia)
AWWWW someones just begging for a snorgle
what an adoreable chubby ball of cuteness….I hope she keeps that cute pudgyness, not all of it though. ^_^
Just make sure you give her back.
This is so sad, but so sweet too. It proves that most of us would do anything for our babies if we thought they were in danger.

How sad, indeed. This is something I’m sure we all would do without thinking of the consequences. God Bless Mrs. Henry and may she reunite with her beloved kittys on the other side.
I would do the exact same thing as this lady did. There is one thing, however, I would do differently which is NOT to have lit candles around cats. Some people do and have no problems but I say why tempt fate? Candles and cats don’t mix and sometimes have disastrous consequences like this story. Okay, I’ll get off the soapbox but this is one of my pet peeves.
I light candles around my cats, but ONLY when I am right there. I do not walk away from that candle even to use the toilet if there’s a cat around. Two of my three kitties have had run-ins with candles, which weren’t serious enough to really damage the cat, but it was enough to convince them to leave Mommy’s candles alone forever.
The idea of flaming kitties kept me from lighting my candles. Last Christmas I saw that Brookstone has battery operated scented pillar candles, for those of us who can’t burn real ones. The vanilla one smells yummy.
thinkgeek.com actually has some led candles that look a LOT like real ones - my cat knows to stay away from candles, but I was thinking of getting those anyway.
I also do not light tapers. If I light candles, they are votives or pillars.
I have hundreds of candles and I never leave them where the cats can get them. Most of mine are in sconces or they are glassed in and impossible to knock over.
The only cat I have who messes with the candles is Maverick, and all he does is put his foot in them to put them out. It doesn’t seem to hurt him, and it’s given him the nickname “Mavvy Waxxy Paw.”
If it is the smell of the candle that you like, get a coffe cup warmer (the sell them at walmart and places like that) or a candle warmer and use the jar candles. That is what I do. You get the wonderful fragrance with no fire danger. The wax also doesn’t get as hot so not much danger there. I have found that candle scents last about 10 time longer when you use a warmer so you save money too. At work, I warm my candle for about 1/2 hour and then the scent keeps going for hours. I have been using the same little candle since September and it is still going strong!
I’m not sure I understand how this works. Does it just heat the candle so you don’t have to light it? Sorry I’m kinda slow today. It sounds neat though.
You’re exactly right. It is just warm enough to melt the wax and release the scent. The warming plate is surrounded by a plastic housing that stays cool. You can get them in Wal-Mart for $5-10. My daughter was given one last summer when she was in the hospital recovering from an auto accident. It has since become a fixture in our home. NOTE: the candle lasts much longer this way than burning, as well. The jar candle we were given (and use regularly) still appears full and new.
Well then I’m going to Walmart after work. LOL
QVC also sell “flameless” pillar candles. they use LED light and they flicker like real candles. for those of you who aren’t QVC addits you can go to http://www.qvc.com and do a search for them. such a sweet baby today! im partial to the really fluffy ones, to the dismay of my boyfriend.
A truely sad story. That woman was a hero (heroine). I once lit one of those voltive candles and one of my cats walked over it and burned his belly, I was heartbroken and felt “lower than a snake’s belly” (it’s a Texas thing). He got extra rations of gooey food for weeks! NEVER AGAIN!
I worry about something like that happening so often, that I’m too afraid to use my slow-cooker when I’m not home! The ASPCA offers free pet rescue stickers–click on the link. It’s a great idea for all pet owners to have one of these placed in a visible spot…

Dee if you don’t have their litter box in the bathroom try putting the slow cooker on the vanity and close the door tight.
Susan–their box is in the bathroom–what I meant was I’m afraid that there may be an electrical short while I’m gone. (I know, I know, I’m neurotic! haha!)
I also worry about that! Good thinking.
Thanks for the link Dee. My neighbor has one and I was always thinking about going and getting one. So I went to the link and signed up for one to be sent to me.
You didn’t add the rest of the line “lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut” The only thing lower than that is whale poop.
Huddy’s Mama, are you near Houston? I’m in Galveston, so I read this story this morning in the Chronicle. Such a sad story, but I know how the woman felt. I would have done the same thing for mine.
Yes ma’am. I’m between Houston and Katy. I was just in your neck of the woods at the San Luis about a month ago!
That would sooo be me… I am so devoted to my cats.
I have some battery operated candlesticks. I got them at walmart’s a few years ago. I think you can still get them, around christmas time. I’m always afraid of setting the house on fire. You can also find battery operated colored lanterns. They put out alot of light. They are great, when the electricity goes out or you need a lamp outside.
What a contented looking little ball of fluff! I’m new to posting here but I have to say - this is a great little community of cat people.

Glad to have you aboard, Mike. Welcome!
Welcome Mike..what part of the world are you in?
Welcome Mike… I’m relatively new here too. I have learned so much about cats here, and the people here are awesome…
We’re almost neigbours, in the big scheme of things… Halifax.
Wow, Mike, you are a bit away from most of us? How’s the weather up there? Glad you’re here!
Cool! A fellow Cannuck. I have a kitty named Sydney but I can’t lie she was named for the the city in OZ not NS.
Welcome, Mike! Nice to have you with us!
Hello, Mike!
Welcome to this nice group of people I have been enriched by them in my life. They give great info, rally around when one is down and bring many chuckles to our day. You will be a most delightful added addition.
Hi Mike!
Is that quote from the same Jim Davis that does “Garfield”?
I love the Garfield cartoons. Welcome aboard.
Welcome to the group, Mike! This group of people provide me with laughter, tears, amazment, and joy. They provide such good tips and articles. A day without TDK is like a day without chocolate.
