Coconut

CoconutThis is our Coconut, we found him two years ago running in and out of traffic. We took him to the vet and he had a little scratch on his nose. This was his favorite place to be when I was at the computer. I know what your thinking, black cat, Coconut? Well, my then four year old daughter decided that we should call him that, and it stuck. His nickname is “Coco-nugget”. He is big and fat now and loves to drink from any running water faucet in the house. In fact if he sees you heading toward one, it is a race to see who makes it first. He usually wins.

I figured he was on the top of the inbox pile. He’s on top of the pile to show that he’s more important than any work you might have in there!

Cute kitty! He looks a lot like how my Squeaky looked as a kitten.

A little kit named Coconut was playing in the street
He could not have known that by doing so
His people he would meet.

Now he is a big ole cat
And silly and crazy, too
If you head for the water tap
He’ll win that race with you.

My Mickie used to turn the faucet on by pushing the handle with his head and then when he was through the water would run until we noticed what he had done. He hated water unless is in a glass that we had taken to drink from or fresh from the faucet.

Coconuts - Monty Python

Down in an english fair, one evening I was there
When I heard a showman shouting underneath the flair

I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts
There they are a’standing in a row
Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head!
Give ‘em a twist, a flick of the wrist
That’s what the showman said

I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts
Every ball you throw will make me rich
There stands me wife, the idol of me life
Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch

Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch
Roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch
Roll a bowl a ball, roll a bowl a ball
Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch

I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts (they’re lovely)
There they are a’standing in a row (one, two, three, four)
Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head! (and bigger)
Give ‘em a twist, a flick of the wrist
That’s what the showman said

Now that I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts (da da da da da)
Every ball you throw will make me rich (have a banana)
There stands me wife, the idol of me life
Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch (all together now)

Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch (harmony!)
Roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch
Roll a bowl a ball, roll a bowl a ball
Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch

COOL!!! I get the first stanza of the song stuck in my head quite often but never knew the rest of the song! (Lion King) It will be stuck for the rest of the day, but at least now I know more words!!! :-D

I had a little black kitten we rescued, her name was Yoyo. Sweet and soooo soft. We lost her at 5 yrs due to fatty liver disease. :-( (I stopped using that vet right after that.)
I hope you have many happy years with your little COCO nugget and that she remains a healthy kitten for many years.

Five is a perfect number! I have five and it is delightful; however, I do want more, all the time. I am hypervigiliant because I don’t want to become a cat hoarder, but I do sort of have the feeling that it is as easy to care for 6 as it is for 5, etc. I just want to buy a big house and take in strays. Is that so wrong?

BWAHAHAHAHAAHA :D

It’s originally from Monty Python’s flying circus

Comment by Mrs. Morgat's Kitten
2007-02-11 02:01:32

I’m gonna be humming it, too. But it goes way further back than Monty Python! A British singer named Gracie Field used to sing it during World War II, and it probably goes back further than that. Sounds like an English Music Hall type song to me.

Coconut is such a beautiful katkin! Glad you happened along when he was out playing in traffic.

All hail Monty Python’s Flying Circus! Still great after all these years….The song, though, is older than that. I suppose I had to answer this because of childhood memories: my dad used to sing it back in the ’60s, while faking a (not-so-good) Cockney accent. It’s a WWII-era novelty song that was–here goes, trivia fans–an early hit for Merv Griffin of TV game-show fame, if anyone remembers him. You’re right. Some of us WILL have the melody stuck in our brains for days.

We are moving about 120 miles within the next two months. Any suggestions on keeping my two cats safe and calm would be appreciated. I know they are already concerned by the packing etc. going on. Strangers in the house we’re trying to sell and moving men are going to be quite difficult.

Try Feliway.. Pet stores usually carry it. It calms cats in stressful situations. Your vet may be able to prescribe a mild tranquiliser.
Reassure them that they are going with you and please keep them indoors … When you reach your destination keep them confined for a few days so they can become accostomed to the new smells and sounds around them.. Good luck!

Hi,
On the day of the move confine them to a small room that only you will go in so they son’t get out until you’re ready to put them in their carriers. When you get there hopefully you can put them in a small room by themselves(w/ food & water, catbox) until they calm down some and then let them out gradually. Good luck!

My Dusty likes the running water too and will lie on the floor in the downstairs half bath and wait for me to walk by hoping I will have to go into the bathroom so I can turn the water on in the sink for him. He always gives me that “look” and meows at me as I walk down the hall past the bathroom door. “Do you have to go in here now mom?” he is asking me. “‘Cause if you do I want the water NOW please!!”

I love the way you express the dialogue we all have with our cats and the way they shape our daily lives into whatever THEY want. My Mikey tells me when its time to get up, time to go to bed and of course when I am supposed to feed them. Who needs a clock? The cats always know what time it is. They see me as a lessor being who needs to be told what to do.

Comment by mayra

That is so true. My Chloe used to be my clock and wake me up at exactly 6:00am. She was so reliable I stopped setting the alarm. She’s quit that job, though, and now only meows in my ear if I sleep in and she wants to complain that her breakfast is late. Still bosses me around in other ways too!

Hi Elaine, Please don’t feel that way. All are welcome here whether or not ‘welcome’ posts are sent. Just join in on the friendly banter and comment on the sweet kittens. May I say that sometimes there are posts that are unusual and we aren’t sure how to take them. Please don’t take offense but I think the post about your stolen kittens was in that category and we weren’t sure how to take it. I apoligize if you felt ignored. Your story is very sad. That woman was no friend since she took advantage of you. I’m glad you went to the police and made them aware of her wrong doing. We appreciate your updates too. Everyone needs to be aware of people like that. We all love our kits and other family pets very much and we want to keep them safe. You are very kind to take in homeless kitties and giving them a warm and safe place to live. Welcome to the coolest kitten site on the web.

I concur! Welcome Elaine. Rest assured that you were not excluded in any way. I have never looked at this as a clique, just a happy group of people who share a commen interest and love for our furry friends. I don’t think everyone who posts to this site had some sort of official welcome, in fact I think I have actually seen less than 15 or so, and those only in the last 2 months. I certainly didn’t, I lurked for a while (back when only 40-80 comments per kitten were being made) and then made small tentative comments for many more months.
I personally was very distraught over your loss, I just did not know how I could help. Please don’t be put off, just keep coming back and enjoying the positive comments and beautiful babies that lurk here every day. :-D

Whenever there is a new person on this site, like me, you have to join in and become acquainted over time. When you are a new member of any organization it takes time to become known. Keep adding your positive comments, asking questions, etc, and little by little you will become familiar to everyone too.

Dear Elaine from Portland, Ore.
I have been observing this site since June 2006, tho, never posted. After reading your comment today, I felt compelled to post. Because you didn’t receive a welcome letter or a dozen roses at the front door, does not mean that no one cares. I did read your posts, and remember them quite well. Being thousands of miles away, it would be hard to advise you on the protocol that you should take. This is a loving “blog”,where those who contribute, may share everyday, or once a month, or whatever. The bottom line is to share the love about our feline friends, and the love that they bring us (all other four legged and two legged included).!! So because you didn’t get the “welcome” that you wanted does not mean that no one cared of your situation…trust me many did…..just were lost for words on how to handle it.

I have been posting here for a few months, at least, I can’t remember when I started. I didn’t know what to say about your story. I just know you sounded so upset and with good reason. Bill is our Poet Laureate, Huddy’s mama has the communal backpack for verbally kidnapping kittens (by words only, not real) and you can ‘bring in your own, and sneek past her…if you can…., Rosie is the ‘Fuzz’ inventor, and you’ll figure out the other regulars. Elaine: I was not officially “welcomed” either, but I must confess, I did not introduce myself, as I have seen others. I am rather new at the whole blogging experience (though I am now quite addicted) and I thought the protocol was just to jump in. I realize that may be difficult for someone who is in pain or shy, and luckily I was neither of those things, but I have felt pretty welcome here, even without official postings of greetings. I just barrel on through, and add my comments when the feeling strikes (or boredom at work is overwhelming). I hope you will do the same, as everyone is interested in the ongoing commentary.

I think ‘Coconut’ is INSPIRED. Your daughter is wise. He’s furry on the outside and sweet on the inside, right? He grew up to be almost round, and he’s definitely a nut–all kittens are! Perfect name for a little ink-dark guy who was contrary enough to be found playing in traffic. BTW, is it a trick of the photo, or do I see tabby stripes on the black of his coat?

Coconut is a little dark angel! Love the ROUND eyes, and the tail draped over the edge of the IN basket!

My little black kitty at ten months old is a faucet stalker, too. I have one of those filters that swings up when I want water to drink or cook with, and when I use the filter, there’s a secondary stream of water that comes out behind it–Dara goes after that with a vengeance–trying to bite it, bat it. Even gets her head under it and gets all wet! Everything’s a toy with cats this age.

Here’s hoping Coconut will have a long and happy life in your loving home!

Oh My! Adorable!! I’m the biggest black kitty fan. My husband and I rescued ours too and she is our “dark angel” named Kahlua. She enjoys playing with the water facets also!

Thank you everyone so much for your wonderful comments about my Coconut. And thank you Ivory Bill for that cute poem, I just love it. Both of my daughters think he is “Famous”for being on this site. “Not like he wasn’t the most famous part of the family to begin with.” I found this site a few months ago and it is a highlight of the day for us to come home and see the new precious kitty for the day. It makes our day. My girls love it. We love cats so much and glad to know so many other people enjoy them as much as we do.

JCL

It’s grrreat to have another cat-fan from the Bayou state — after all, the mascot of LSU is — The Fighting Tigers!

“Y’all take care, and clean your paws before — and after dinner!”

They are right, Coconut is famous now. What a beautiful kitten. Must be even better now that he is a big kitty and there is more of him to love.

Coconut has the crazy kitty look in his eyes. I love black cats! (RIP to my rescued blackie, Lyndon, who lived to be 19 years old!) and to Cocnutters — pounce on it!!

I’m real late posting for Coconut but here is another posting for this sweet boy. I had a black cat named Salem about 10 years ago (now crossed the Rainbow Bridge). My sons named him after the cat on Sabrina the Teenaged Witch. Many people don’t like black cats but they are great. Well, I think all kinds of cats are great. I would have a housefull but my husband won’t let me.
