Nikko

Location: Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada
NikkoNikko was rescued from the SPCA. I wonder if maybe he spent too much time staring at the fish through a window and thinks he is part aquatic creature. The fishbowl is his favourite place to sit when we are all in the kitchen.

Anyway, he looks like he’s a character!!!

Happy Weekend to all.

We are due for more snow on Sunday. Hopefully it won’t be as horrible as last week. I think I need to get to the grocery to get the pre-snow obligatory milk, bread and toilet tissue. I don’t really need it, but I think it’s the law here on the east coast. ;)

Hi Elene-How is the kit you helped the other day doing? Has he/she picked a name yet?

Comment by Elene in York, PA
2007-02-24 17:39:36

Hi Teresa, thank you for asking. The answer is, I’m not sure. He is eating and seems healthy. Has stopped most of the shaking when I am in talking to him. I can put my hand near him and no hissing or laid back ears, but I think he is feral not just a lost or abandoned pet.

I missed my appointment for his clinic visit because I could not put him in a cat carrier. He of course won’t go back in the trap. I was hoping he would use the carrier as a sleeping and hiding place (like all my other rescues) and then I could have just closed the door. That isn’t happening yet. So far I’ve had to cancel 4 appointments and it is frustrating. Worth it of course. My big fear is that if he is feral, and because he is at least 2-3 years old, I will have to release him back outside.

I’m leaning toward Stache (paulajeanne’s suggestion), Finn (Susan’s idea and my last name is Irish) and Yoric (from Kate the Grate). Of course, as everyone with a cat knows, it sometimes takes a bit of time before the exactly right name surfaces. Some of mine started out with 2 or 3 different names in the beginning.

Try dropping a towel over him and stand the cat carrier on its end so the opening is at the top and slide him down in there and be very, very fast with getting the door closed. I always had a hard time getting Petey in the carrier when he was going back home to my beother’s house. I got him minus the towel but the up ended carrier worked. Good Luck I hope you get to keep him indoors and not have to release him back onto the mean streets.

I can’t even catch may Max to put him in - he flows through my arms like water. I usually only get one chance, and if I blow it, that’s it - I have to call and cancel with the vet. If I do succeed and get him there, he’s so traumatized by the whole ordeal that it takes him days to come out from under the sofa. Any ideas about how to make this less stressful for us both?

Ask again on Monday when more people are here they might have a solution. Someone mentioned something to calm a kitty when traveling but I just don’t remember what it is. Have you asked your Vet?

Comment by Susan in OH
2007-02-24 23:44:49

Yep, and she wasn’t very helpful. Tranquilizers would be ineffective, she said, and Feliaway, which we used throughout the house to try to calm him when we were acclimating him to D’artagnan didn’t seem to have much of an effect on him either. Also, Max still has his claws, and doesn’t hesitate to use them when he’s trying to get away. I caught him as a 4 month old baby with a box trap, and he was easier to manage then. But as an adult he has a positive talent for escape. Maybe I should have named him Houdini. :?

Susan - Go to a healthfood store and get Rescue Remedy. It’s for humans but many people, especially those dealing with feral, scared and/or agressive cats have had good luck with it. You just put a few drops the his water bowl. It has a minty taste cats seem to like. It isn’t a tranquilizer. It’s more like a “prozac” kind of thing. I’ll put my Lil Hunney story on later today on the Monday kitten and you can see how I won over Lil Hunney (my feral). Do you have or can you borrow a small cage? You can put food in there and then wait for him to go in after it. It will be bigger and not as scary as a trap. Whe he does, close the door. You may have to not feed him for 24 hours so he will be hungry enough to go in the cage. Good luck.

Elene, You have had more than your share of snow this winter, here in Minn we are getting it this weekend. They say 16+ inches by Monday - ech! I lived in PA for 14 years, I think we had snow you could measure twice,
we lived north of Philly.
We had a cat “Fuz” who liked to sleep in a flower pot, I never did plant anything in it. For some reason it was stored in the garage for about 5 years, I found it one day and took it into the house to clean it up and maybe finally plant something in it - Fuz saw it and was
into it as soon as I set it on the floor. She didn’t forget her favorite place to nap! ! !

Another suggestion, albeit weak, might be to find a vet that does house calls. I know some people who have never been able to to get their animals to a vet, so the vet comes to them.

This kitten is just trying to help control his fur flying around in the kitchen… ;-)

Nikko is sooooo cute! I bet his little white bib is very soft. I wonder if he thinks no one can see him.
This photo reminds me of a ground squirrel story. Across the driveway from my office a chain link separated our property from an open field. Of course if you had open area, a chain link fence and a few bushes you had prime ground squirrel habitat. Every day the squirrels would climb to the top rail of the chain link fence for sentry duty. If my coworkers or myself would walk by when the sentry squirrel was on duty, he would scamper below the top rail of the chain link fence to hide for a minute then pop his head over the rail to see if all was clear.
Have a wonderful day everyone!!

Thank you Teresa I just checked the site out. I would be in hog heaven as I loved feeding the squrriels besides the birds where I lived before in Augusta. I made them a big pot of pop corn each day and sunflower seeds when I had the money. I put all the food out and one of them dug up flower blubs and I ran outside and he was sitting on a branch about eye level with me. I shook my finger at him was telling him he had his nerve to do that after I fed him all the time. I had a flash in my mind what I looked like and backed off and went into the house before someone called those nice men in white coats.

Awesome. I dunno what it is about kitties, but they really do have a wonderful knack for finding the most interesting places to have a sit. This reminds me of that joke site Bonsai Kitty…though there is unfortunately a lot of people that commented on there that don’t understand satire.

It’s a silly site granted, and I don’t really find it all that amusing, but it’s worth a look…kind of in the manner that looking at a train wreck illicits a look.

Obviously, a forward-thinking kitty: when they put the fish in, he’ll be ready!

Cats do like to find odd places to squeeze into, usually round ones. My Shy used to sleep in a fruit bowl on the dining room table until he got spooked by something and crashed it on the floor. And one morning I woke up and found The Biffer curled up in a frying pan I’d left on the stove (luckily it was clean, so she didn’t get all greasy).
