Dorrie

Location: Sheffield, UK

DorrieThis is Dorrie at six weeks, on the first day I got her. I rescued her when I saw her being swung round by her tail by a little boy. She was underweight and infested with fleas, but she’s now a healthy and hellraising seven months old.

No, they’re children. At heart, the human being is a selfish creature until taught better, and this is especially true of children. If you want a child to grow up to treat animals with respect and kindness, you have to teach them that way from the earliest ages.

The little boy downstairs, who has pets of his own, began to exhibit some of these beastly tendencies, and I was quite concerned. What happened was that he came up to visit with me, and he was tormenting my little Rufus. Before I could intercede, Rufus bit him, HARD. The little boy started to cry and looked at me for sympathy, but I told him this was what happened when you were mean to animals.

His mother, LUCKILY, was very supportive of me, and did scold her little boy, and let him know that animals will fight back if provoked. I hope this will nip it in the bud-

I know, it’s awful, isn’t it? I was at a holiday party when a boy who was about five decided to start chasing the cat and trying to grab her tail. Lily (cat’s name) has always been a wary cat (she’s a rescued feral) and she immediately flipped out and ran faster than I thought possible, hissing and fluffing up her fur. I was furious when Lily and the boy ran by- with his parents watching and not doing ANYTHING about it!! I stopped him and asked him what he was doing. He said he went up to her to pet her (NOT what it looked like, but who knows, maybe he really meanT well in the beginning) and she ran away so he was catching her. I said maybe she didn’t want to be petted right now but he said no way, all cats loved being petted. His parents were starting to glare at me (For what? Trying to help poor Lily?) so I decided it would be useless to take it further, and reluctantly let him go. Thankfully, shortly afterward Lily fled upstairs where he couldn’t catch her. I really, really hope his parents scolded him for that later.

Ccat, you were very nice to that little boy. I wouldn’t Have been so nice. I would have asked the child to stop no matter what look the parents had. I would have explained to the child that the cat doesn’t want to be petted as it is running away from you. I would have also asked the child to please sit down and leave the cat alone. If the child couldn’t sit down, I would have asked the parents to get involved and if they do not, then I would cut the visit short. The child is your house and your cat and therefore you have the right to scold it if they cannot contain their child. The child is in your house and it involves your cat and therefore you have the right to scold it if they cannot contain their child. I feel if someone visiting me cannot respect my rules and my pet, then why have them to visit me. If they want to visit, we can do it at their place or at a cafe. I know it sounds harsh but that is just my opinion.

As a working parent, I will tell you that is no excuse. You make time. It is that important. My husband and I both work full time, and our 8 year old son knows how to treat animals. It is his responsibility to feed the cats and give them fresh water everyday. The proper treatment of animals will translate directly to human relationships as he gets older. It is especially important for children to learn to care for creatures that are weaker than they are. This way they can become well rounded, compassionate adults.

I completely agree with you MeezerMama. It just seems some parents out there don’t want to take the time….at my previous home, I had neighbors with teenage boys, and you wouldn’t believe what they did to their own dogs in their back yard. I called animal control and the police but there was nothing they could do without me filing a written complaint with my name included. I was afraid of these boys and felt so bad for these dogs. Then one day the dogs were gone. I do applaude parents that take the time, and show children how rewarding an animals affection can be.

I agree that the parents have the responsibility to teach their children to respect all life. Let’s keep in mind, however, that kids have minds of their own and will do as they will. Children of any age cannot be watched 24 hours a day. I wonder how many of you are parents yourselves that are fully blaming the parents. Many parents do all the right things and their children still go a different route. OK.. off my soap box now.

This also could be a cry for help from a child who is abused himself. Often people that are picked on try to find someone smaller and weaker then they are and pick on them. It is a vicious cycle. I am so glad someone was there to step in and stop the abuse to this sweet baby. Maybe that little boy needs a hero too. Just food for thought. Have a great day everyone !

This could be the first lesson on treating living beings with care and respect. He may be an only child without a pet of his own.

There is one nearby whose name is Tia and has blue eyes which I find quite unusual. I asked my husband about adopting another kitty and he said that as long as you know that the cost and care will double and are willing to take responsibility for that, then he will support me in my decision. Soooo will Sylvester accept a seven month old kitty when Sylvester is a year and half. Time to think.

2007-03-06 15:39:42

I agree, kids can be hundreds of times more destructive. I’ve always hated the fact that rental places charge you for animals. I paid a $250 non-refundable deposit for my boys and I pay $25 more a month in rent because of them. However, they haven’t damaged anything in the apartment. On the other hand, the apartment complex made us move into one in which the carpet was permanently stained pink in EVERY ROOM, all because someone had a little kid who couldn’t hold a cup of koolaid in hand for the life of him (or her). It just burns me!! Then again, it’s more the apt. complex’s fault for not ripping up the carpet when they should have!

Comment by LeeAnne in FL
2007-03-06 16:00:17

I think there should be a deposit fee for people with children under a certain age. Some children can destroy more things than any pet can!! That’s just like some complexes refuse animals of a certain weight because of the noise, ummmm….do they not realize when a child runs in an upstairs apt, it sounds like a stampede going through???

LeeAnne,
I agree that children CAN be as destructive as some pets but I feel that I should not be punished for having children under a certain age.
Children of ALL ages, not just young ones, can be destructive if not properly taught how to behave themselves and respect what they have and the things around them. My babies are taught very early what respect is, being a person, possesion or a pet.
And also, what about young adults (heck even some older ones) that are out on thier own and party all the time, up at all hours of the night with loud music. Should they also be charged extra because of thier age.

As far as the weight for certain anaimal, alot of places put a limit on this for saftey reasons along with property protection. If you think about it alot of the animals especially dogs that are kept out of apts for thier weight are the meaner dogs (pit bulls, dobbies, etc) This is a risk to not only other residents but to employees as well. I not sayign that I agree with this but here in Texas that is the main reasons listed for puting a weight on animals allowed in Apts. Granite it goes back to same as with kids, It is all in how they are raised.

I agree and totally understand Tracie, but I guess my problem is that my cats ARE my children, I haven’t been blessed with human children only furry ones. Like all parents, I’m protective of the children I have and adore! All in all, lots of adults need to be re-taught respect too. There are too many adults doing cruel things to other adults, children and animals…..it’s a vicious circle…..and it’s terribly sad..

Hey LeeAnne, try a 3 year old who screams like a banshee when he didn’t get his way and then throw temper tantrums at any hour of the day or night. The property manager wouldn’t do anything about it for fear of getting in trouble due to laws about discriminating against children in apartment rentals. So I had to listen to this until thankfully they moved out this past October. Now we have a bunch of twentysomethings who are actually just as bad as the kid as there apt is “party central” now and they litter the property with their cigarette butts. Disgusting! The property manager doesn’t care. Slimelord! :::getting down from my soap box now:::

Is Dorrie short for A-dorrie-able? I know that is lame but thankfully she is not from the abuse she had to endure. Thanks for rescueing her.

I’m so glad that you saved her - you will have a lifetimes of kitty hugs. I think in this case the parents are to blame. I know both my parents would kill me if they ever found out I had treated an animal like that. A good upbringing is necessary - there is no excuse for not educating your kids in how to treat people and animals.

Why are people so cruel. She looks a bit like my kitten Maisie.

Dorrie has such a trusting look on her sweet little face. Blessings on you for her rescue. It warms my heart to know that the trusting look on her face is for one who deserves it and repays that trust with love and kindness. Kisses for her splotchy nose.
