Madeleine

Location: Austin, TX, USA

MadeleineThis is Madeleine, my maine coon kitten on her first night home with me. I often work at home and she loves sitting on my desk, watching me tap on my laptop. Maddie is so funny, sweet and playful that she’s healing my heart, which was broken from losing my previous maine coon, lion kitty Maxx, to carcinoma in January.

How are those? Any info you could send me to merchqueen1029@yahoo.com would be greatly appreciated. Both of my cats were adopted by me as adults and both had been declawed way before I got them. Everytime I think of adding another cat to the mix I wonder how unfair it would be, because I could never have a cat declawed. So this may be a good option.

Wow! such wide open expressive eyes, could look into them all day! How can you tell a main coon as a kitten? I may be looking soom and was wondering how to spot one at the pound/Dumb friends league?

MerD,

Maine Coons are very large and tend to have a somewhat triangular shape to their faces. Their personalities are wonderful…very sweet and very laid back. But if you have your heart set on a Maine Coon it would probably be a good idea to check out some of the websites of breeders to see what the specifics are for the breed since there are a lot of long-haired cats that resemble Maine Coons but might not be. You might also want to see if there’s a Maine Coon rescue group in your area because then you’ll have the best of both worlds…getting the breed you want and adopting a cat that needs a home.

I got lucky getting Jiggs. I had always admired Maine Coons, but I will only adopt, not buy kitties. I responded to an ad for Maine Coon kittens, and when I rescued Jiggs from a place that was overrun by cats, he fit the profile of what I thought they looked like. No papers, so I could certainly never show him, but I only wanted a buddy for Shaddo. Went to a cat show and one of the top 3 winners was a Coon who looked like my Jiggs. This one was described as a “Classic Brown Tabby Maine Coon”. They look for facial shape, triangular - like a slice of pie; the larger the better. They also have strong front legs, a gentle personality, and of course those beautiful markings. My baby will never win a show, but he’s my buddy & I’m his person. I’ve heard that Coons pick someone to be their person (staff, maid, caregiver…) and I’m so glad he picked me!

Well a lot of Maine Coons have the same markings as Madeline… also they will generally have a “mane” of fur around the neck, lots of fur in the ears, a big regal tail, and tufts of fur on the feet. They were designed to live in cold climates and have all of tha tfur to keep them warm. NEAT!!! My kitty is part Maine Coon, and has several of the characteristics - she looks just like this one, plays fetch, chirps, likes to be nearby but not right on you etc.

Hello from Minnesota.
Some years ago when we lived in PA a cat decided to move in with us, very independent. We had the feeling that this had once been a show cat, she liked to have her picture taken, bring out a camera and she would strike a pose. After reading about the Maine Coon I beleive that was her breed. We had her for 18 years before we lost her to Feline Cancer.
Morris (well, we had black and white TV) had a task for each of us, she was a wonderful, loving cat and I still miss her, she’s been gone almost 20 years.

The vets have something called a pill shooter. It looks like a long sringe and has a rubber tip with 4 slits in it. This allows any size pill to be put in . You hold the kitties mouth open with the left hand and put the pill shooter all the way back and push the end with your thumb and down it goes. You can give any dog or cat a pill in a second with no trouble. They cost about $4.95. No help from other people either…..you can do it yourself! I can’t live without mine. My Brownie just had a back tooth pulled yesterday. I took her in to have the one on the other side of her mouth pulled but that turned out to be ok, just needed cleaning. The one they pulled was loose and had a cavity in there. Right now she is hiding under the bed. She is afraid if she comes out, mommy will take her to the dr’s again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brownie is a 13 pound tortie.

2007-03-07 20:35:36

Yay for Rooty, although he probably feels a little yucky right now. So good to hear that it isn’t something serious, though. At least he has a lot of love to speed his recovery…and the meds help, too. :)

Sylvester must know I am thinking about adding another kitty because yesterday morning and this morning he was such a lovebug. Well, I caught Sylvester on the toilet with paws up on the toilet paper ready to shred. Caught him just in time. I picked him up and put in the bedroom and said a big “no” at the same time. He just looked at me like “what did I do”.

When I had the 24/7 kitty, I woke up one morning to the living room looking like it had snowed. She had gotten into the paper towels and shredded about five rolls worth. That wasn’t the only thing she decided to destroy and so eventually I had to give her back to the adoption agency because she was so unhappy that she was destroying everything in the place. This experience has made me think twice about adopting another kitty. I don’t want to ever go through the painful process of having to bring a cat back to the agency from where I adopted it.

It’s called denial. Went through it myself. I found out in October of 98 that I was pregnant and my full term son was born in February of 99. I was lucky enough not to have any morning sickness and I didn’t show until the last couple of months. And I only weighed 110 pounds at the time so it certainly wasn’t extra weight that was hiding it.

When my mom was pregnant with me, she didn’t find out for 5 months. She was ALWAYS irregular, so missing a period didn’t seem like a big deal. She was also on birth control when I was conceived.

My mom had my brother, who’s 12 years older and then had a stillborn and then 6 miscarriages.

I truly believe she thought there was no way she’d ever be able to have another child after she had my brother.

The article mentions her lack of menses due to obesity. Denial may be part of it, but if this is her first, she might not have known what symptoms to be aware of. And with no period for years, that wouldn’t have been an indication. Not so much denial as cluelessness.

I’ll bet she is a great helper too.My Annie has started something new. When she finishes her meals (I don’t free feed) she puts one of her toy fuzzy balls in her dish. Then, last night when Juliette finished her dinner Annie put 2 toy fuzzy balls in Juliette’s dish. They both eat in my bedroom. I’m sure she has a good reason for this. I wish she could tell me. My boy, Dewy, does this every time he eats. I’ve read that they are putting their toys somewhere they feel the toys are safe and will be there later. Since owners routinely don’t move the food dishes, this is a good spot for this. Dewy sometimes puts the toys in his water dish too!

My sister has two cats with strange behavior like that. One just does the usual putting the toys in the dishes- but she puts hair ties in the water dish, and fuzzy mice in the food bowl- never the other way around. Her other cat eats her meal and then turns around and mimicks burying the food bowl. It’s adorable!!! She does it every time, and we have no idea why. I guess she thinks she’s really burying it so that her nasty sisters won’t find her left-overs and eat them. Weird, huh?

**Baker Goes 56 Years Without Sick Day**
A Utah Hospital Worker Stays Healthy For Decades

POSTED: 1:29 pm EST March 6, 2007
OGDEN, Utah — Corrine Holston is feeling pretty good — like she does every day.

In 56 years of working for a hospital in Utah, Holston has never called in sick.

Not even once.

She was recently honored at a banquet at the Ogden Regional Medical Center and got to ride in a limo.

Holston is in the kitchen every weekday at 5 a.m. making cakes, pies and other goodies.

The 78-year-old baker said she doesn’t drink or smoke and is just too busy to take a sick day.

that story makes me sick….I think I need tomorrow off…I’ll just be calling in sick… do you hear that Corrine??? Corrine?!? hmmm…she’s probably at work. Love the way they honored her, though, with a banquet at the hospital where she worked with food she probably prepared and a limo ride (whoopee!) to where else? — the hospital! I am underwhelmed by the hospital’s generosity. How about some gift certificates…uhhh paid days off?

I agree with you CatRancher. How about some cash award for this lady. Sheesh. No sick time in 56 years…usually companies give five to ten sick days off per year and if you guess that she is making around $8.00 an hour. So let’s say five sick days is 40 hours times $8.00 is $320.00 times 56 years equates to $17,920! I think the lady deserves a nice cash award of at least $2,000 plus a nice five day vacation somewhere nice like Hawaii or the Carribean! Sheesh.
