Mittens

Location: Gloucester, Virginia, USA

MittensMittens was born in a NASA wind tunnel. He was just a few weeks old when his litter was found. I just had to adopt him, He was irresistible! He is always looking for a tight place to sleep. And at 5 weeks he found my purse. He is now 14 years old and still likes those tight places.

Beam me up Scotty! I second that question…how does a cat get into a wind tunnel at NASA where the security must be skin tight!

Interview went well yesterday. They fired about a 100 questions at me and they kept asking for examples as well. It was a screening process and here is hoping I passed with “flying colors”. I am hoping to hear back from them by the end of this week or early next week. Here is hoping they liked me enough to ask me to come back to meet with the hiring director.

Little-known factoid coming up: in NASA’s early days, when they were still using conveniently-reclassified ex-Nazi scientists (yes, Mr. vonBraun, I *do* mean you), the test facilities were plagued by rodents. The mice would play around in the wind tunnel, and a number of Mercury launches had to be scrubbed because there were mouse-shaped dents in the nose-cones. In response to this, NASA hired a mouser, a calico, who they named Booster. Since then there has always been a cat at every NASA facility (if you’re in DC, check out the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum - they have an accounts ledger from 1969, the year of the moonshot, and among the entries for technical equipment you’ll see “July 20: fresh salmon for Lunar - $1.73″ The date coincides with the first moon landing, indicating that the facility mouser was included in the celebrations.)
One might assume that Mittens here is the latest in a long line of distinguished NASA felines (although there is less call for them these days), and had he stayed there his name would be up there with the greats of space travel: Gargarin, Armstrong, Yeager, and Mittens.
(It’s all true, you know - I wouldn’t make stuff like this up :))

Having Lived in Newport News and worked at NASA - Langley, it all depends on which wind tunnel it was. First of all, the area, at the time I lived there, Some 12 years ago, was open to the public in fact you could go on a self guided tour of the facility. You could only see the exterior of the buildings though.

The low speed wind tunnels are huge structures and are raised off the ground in some areas. The portion where the testing is actually done is enclosed in a building. Gigantic fans send the air within the tunnels around in a closed loop.

Mittens may have been born within one of the buildings that house the test areas they are two and three story Brick structures and have offices and other lab areas within.

The VSTOL (Vertical/ Short Takeoff and Landing) tunnel (whereI worked ) had a large assembly bay and electronics shop in it besides the tunnel test area.

There would be ample room for A Momcat to sneak in and have a brood of little fur balls.

We had a raccoon get into our building once….

Ted

Drinking more coffee, lamenting the time
Fatigued mind composing this little rhyme
Waiting in agony for the new kitten
A cute fuzzy bundle with whom to be smitten
A hour’s been stolen or don’t you remember
And alas we won’t see it until this November.
Now again I am visited by cute fuzzy toes
In my next comment, I shall return to prose.
A cute little space traveler slipping out of the sack

Seems, since they don’t know why it showed up so big and so fast, they have to go in, Take it out and look for what triggered it. Poor Nate. Poor us, this will be a huge sum, 1500, but he’s 7, and the best dog I ever had.
