Mittens
Location: Gloucester, Virginia, USA
Mittens was born in a NASA wind tunnel. He was just a few weeks old when his litter was found. I just had to adopt him, He was irresistible! He is always looking for a tight place to sleep. And at 5 weeks he found my purse. He is now 14 years old and still likes those tight places.

OK, I gotta hear the story! How did he come to be born in a NASA wind tunnel?
I agree — full story of the NASA kitten please.
He has his initial on his head!
A very prominent one at that!
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM for YUMMY! What a darling kit! Look how eager he is to get to mommy!
Wouldn’t I love to open my purse and find a surprise like THAT in it!
yes you would,he os SOO CUTE! you seem more of a jersey girl than a cat girl.
So what does that have to do with it! As of matter of fact I love cats more than you do! By the way Mittens is sooooo cute!
He looks sexy
What a sweet lil’ guy! Yes please, do tell the story of how in the world his mama came to be in a wind tunnel!!???
exactly what id like to konw!!!
;b
Third comment! I’m number 3. I’m number 3! (doesn’t take much to brighten up my day…) Spaced out Fuzz…
you must send a lot of comments….
;b
Beam me up Scotty! I second that question…how does a cat get into a wind tunnel at NASA where the security must be skin tight!
Interview went well yesterday. They fired about a 100 questions at me and they kept asking for examples as well. It was a screening process and here is hoping I passed with “flying colors”. I am hoping to hear back from them by the end of this week or early next week. Here is hoping they liked me enough to ask me to come back to meet with the hiring director.
Good luck. Many good thoughts ‘beamed’ your way Karin.
Good luck to you Karin! Positive thoughts and head bumps are coming your way.
Good luck. Job searches are nerve wrecking.
Good luck to you, Karin!
Best wishes to get hired Karin. I am also looking for a job and despite the nursing shortage it seems harder than is reasonable to get a job around here. I am getting thoroughly discouraged.

Plus the mother of the 2 year old her and her hubby’s 7th anniv. is the 14th. October is a busy month for my family also I have 1 neice and 3 cousins one is a mother/daughter combo all born on October 4th . The mother/daughter was in the hospital talking to me on the phone telling me about the birth when she got off the phone her roommate said, “Susan is my cousin too” different sides of the family.
Happy Birthday Alex! I can understand your excitement in getting new clothes as I always love it when I get new ones too! Enjoy your celebration at Copeland’s! Ask your Mom to let you eat whatever you want as it is your special day. Have fun.
Happy B-day Alex!

Hi Karin,
Good luck on your job interview, hope you get the job.
I am surprised that all you nurses are having a problem finding jobs!! I know that here in central Jersey the Sunday paper has at least two pages of jobs in healthcare, most of which are nursing. Well, good luck to all.
That is WONDERFUL news karin!!!
Karin good thoughts still going to you. Remember to send a thank you letter for the interview as soon as possible.
Little-known factoid coming up: in NASA’s early days, when they were still using conveniently-reclassified ex-Nazi scientists (yes, Mr. vonBraun, I *do* mean you), the test facilities were plagued by rodents. The mice would play around in the wind tunnel, and a number of Mercury launches had to be scrubbed because there were mouse-shaped dents in the nose-cones. In response to this, NASA hired a mouser, a calico, who they named Booster. Since then there has always been a cat at every NASA facility (if you’re in DC, check out the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum - they have an accounts ledger from 1969, the year of the moonshot, and among the entries for technical equipment you’ll see “July 20: fresh salmon for Lunar - $1.73″ The date coincides with the first moon landing, indicating that the facility mouser was included in the celebrations.)
One might assume that Mittens here is the latest in a long line of distinguished NASA felines (although there is less call for them these days), and had he stayed there his name would be up there with the greats of space travel: Gargarin, Armstrong, Yeager, and Mittens.
(It’s all true, you know - I wouldn’t make stuff like this up :))
cool factoid! Thanks Tony!
Wow, this is fabulous factoid background. I love knowing stuff like this, and it doesn’t really matter if it is true or not, as long as it is asserted with authority!
Beautiful kitty! I want him-
Interesting factoid, I would love to look it up, but alas school takes precidence. Besides, who am I to question a fellow tdk person, plus I like the idea of NASA putting our tax dollars to work in such a good way.
Abso true . My father told me that when he brought home our kitten back in the 60″s
Best of luck!!!!!!! Totally THEIR loss if they don’t hire you!
Fingers crossed for you!
Thank you all. I will send my interviewer a thank you note tonight. I have two more interviews next week at two different companies. Sending positive thoughts to Kathy that she finds something as well. Lots of nursing opportunities here in Northern California.
Having Lived in Newport News and worked at NASA - Langley, it all depends on which wind tunnel it was. First of all, the area, at the time I lived there, Some 12 years ago, was open to the public in fact you could go on a self guided tour of the facility. You could only see the exterior of the buildings though.
The low speed wind tunnels are huge structures and are raised off the ground in some areas. The portion where the testing is actually done is enclosed in a building. Gigantic fans send the air within the tunnels around in a closed loop.
Mittens may have been born within one of the buildings that house the test areas they are two and three story Brick structures and have offices and other lab areas within.
The VSTOL (Vertical/ Short Takeoff and Landing) tunnel (whereI worked ) had a large assembly bay and electronics shop in it besides the tunnel test area.
There would be ample room for A Momcat to sneak in and have a brood of little fur balls.
We had a raccoon get into our building once….
Ted
The best of luck to you, Karin. You’ve got lots of positive vibes being sent your way. They would be very lucky to hire you!
Drinking more coffee, lamenting the time
Fatigued mind composing this little rhyme
Waiting in agony for the new kitten
A cute fuzzy bundle with whom to be smitten
A hour’s been stolen or don’t you remember
And alas we won’t see it until this November.
Now again I am visited by cute fuzzy toes
In my next comment, I shall return to prose.
A cute little space traveler slipping out of the sack
Just in time to be popped into MeezerMama’s backpack!
Y’all stop copying me or I’m gonna go and get my pitchfork!!!
Oh my what violence! And to think, I was just going to relinquish him to you. Maybe I’ll have to snuggle him a little longer while Huddy’s Mama calms down.
gosh y’all, stop being so violent.guess what: TODAY IS MY 11TH B- DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:)

Happy Birthday!!!!!
Happy Birthday Alex. I hope that your future holds all the best there is in life–and all of the furry friends you want.
Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Alex, happy birthday to you! and many many more!
Hellfire and Brimstone! Look out everyone! Huddy’s Mama doesn’t like being a trendsetter!
I think Huddy’s Mama needs a human form of “catnip”. hehehehe
See!?! He’s already to go home with somebody. He’s saying “I’ve got the keys. Let’s go!” Huddy’s Mama, I officially put your name on him to put in your sac/satchel/tote/backpack.
Thanks, Tiger. You’re a real buddy!!
Come on, Mittens. You’re coming with ME!
You may be the master
at snatching the cat
But this morning, I’m faster
First time for that
Yeah, I noticed… ;( By a few seconds while I was typing.
Well since the server was down, I just had to let little Mittens play here. But all seems to be well now. Huddy’s Mama, here’s the space cadet
If he’s not claimed in the next 15 minutes by Huddy’s Mama, I’ll take him home with me. Him and his wind tunnel. I’ve always wanted to play with one of those!
Rcket science FUZZ. He is as cute as can be !!! Yep…. I want in on that story too.
Uh… that’s supposed to be rocket… new contact lenses and I can’t see real well
IF YOU DON’T MIND ME ASKING,HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR SMILEY FACES SMILE WITH TEETH LIKE THAT??
Alex…instead of the ) at the end of the smiley, make a D (capital D only, not small d.) So instead of :), you get :D.
And incidentally–Happy birthday!!!
I hope someone answers you Alex because I don’t know either.
I use the colon : and a D
And Happy Birthday !!!
Happy birtday, here is a link on how to make all the neat smiley faces.

Good morning!!
He is so adorable! I love his coloring…. a cutie pie!
Okay, 5th comment! I’m really easy to please. Wish Nate and me luck friends, we go to see a surgeon. He’s my dog, but such a good brother to the three cats, and has a wierd large lump on his hip. It was biopsied, not cancer but ‘other’, and we are seeing if he needs major surgery to remove it. I sure hope not.
I hope that Nate is okay. Sending good wishes, head bonks and luck your way!
Thanks
You’ll be in my prayers, Tiga and gangs’ mom. I’ve got to take one of mine in tomorrow for shots and to get her fixed.
Good luck to you too.
Good luck with Nate, Tiga and gangs Mom. Hope it works out okay.
We’ll be waiting to hear your news. Hoping all goes well…
Well, we saw the surgeon, and Nate has surgery scheduled for next Wednesday, to remove a fatty tumor. Seems, since they don’t know why it showed up so big and so fast, they have to go in, Take it out and look for what triggered it. Poor Nate. Poor us, this will be a huge sum, 1500, but he’s 7, and the best dog I ever had. Thanks for the support guys, and you can just call me Tiga, for my baby girl,(Midnight and Cinders round out the gang) I answer to anything anyway. (Probably ‘Dumb’, cause I’m gonna do this.)
THankfully it can be operated on. I hope the cost won’t break your bank account.
A NASA windtunnel? Wow! Don’t know if he’ll get into a backback today folks; looks like he’s found himself a purse. He is adorable.
I took that pretty boy out of the purse and put him in my backpack instead. More room in there!
Hi Huddy’s Mama,
Have you seen the new backpacks? I seen one the other day that had wheels on it with little windows and places to carry all his stuff. It was interesting. I thought of you. It would give you more room with all the kitties that you borrow each day! lol
If you don’t make it to be the first to catnap the kitties, we will share with you. You don’t have to worry about me being first. I usually wait my turn.
Shhhhhhhh… he is contemplating the dimensions of the purse for further research..being born at NASA, you just know he is a little genius!
E=MC2 FUZZ!!!
He should take the nerd test from yesterday!
Maybe he thinks it’s a tardis, Samantha!
Doctor Who for the win!!
Ha Ha! My friend’s husband always says that his wife’s purse is like a Tardis - it looks small on the outside but somehow it is filled everything you might possibly need in any situation! I’m sure that’s the case here - this purse is that little cutie’s spaceship!
Hi Rubia in the UK,
That is the kind of purse I like, small on the outside but with really deep pockets. Must be magic pockets! lol
Kinda sounds like my purse. It has everything in it.
Mine too!
Hello Mittens!!!! Me and my Little Man are right down the road in Newport News!!! Nice to see a close Gloucesterite on here
EVERYONE please think good thoughts for my little sis. she is 9 months pregnant with her first baby and her dr. visit yesterday showed not so much fetal movement, though still pretty good heart beat..she goes in for more testing today (stress test etc) hopefully her and especially the baby are and will be ok….
sending love and purrs your way
Thoughts and prayers coming your way!!!
Both of my pregnacies were like that right before delivery. My Doc told us it was because they were gettingin to position and resting before the birth. I hope that this is the case with your sis.
Positive thoughts coming your way, Samantha.
Positive thoughts being sent her way, Samantha…
Prayers and positive thoughts for your sister Samantha!
take heart usually at 9 months theres not alot of room to move so she is probly ready to harvest the bread
Samantha, prayers for your sister and her baby have been said since this morning. I couldn’t get on something was terribly wrong with Yafooey today.
Hi Susan,
You had that problem too? I had to give it up and wait an hour or so. How are you and sweetie Petey?
Mr. Love Bug is hale and hearty. He is totaly adverse to me reading when I could be kissing him. Now if I could just find a real life guy that was that affectionate!
I tried to get on this morning and had to wait until very late this afternoon. I didn’t know if the problem was with Kittenmaster or Yafooey.
Why on Earth would a happy, warm, well fed infant want to move around to be delivered? I think/hope the baby is maybe just kicking back and enjoying the last few days of that easy life.
thinking good thoughts….baby just waiting to be born…gathering energy! (besides, it’s probably cramped in there!)
Samantha in CO,
Sending good thoughts your way. Sorry your sister is having problems. Hopefully the baby is just saving up his energy for later.
Major prayers going their way. It can still be fine, you know. Hold in there.
He just blows my mind! No chance of the wind ever blowing my way and Mr. Mittens winding up in my back pack. I want in on the wind tunnel story too! Cats are the most amazing creatures and I am continually entertained. Charley, the remaining college kit, is getting better in the bed. He is starting to outgrow his rooting under my chin every time we move. He is settling in and becoming a much better bed buddy.
So Kittenmaster…did the Gremlins get into your server again? I noticed the web page was down this morning. Hopefully you have fed them and banished them to their cage.
I think they were fed after midnight…
And they got wet, too! Which makes for more gremlins.
I’ll second that, I was begining to worry I wouldn’t get my dose of Mittens today……oh, the horror!
I was trying all day to get on!…was having the KTs (kitten tremors from withdrawal)…
OMG, I didn’t realize it was the server (I barely know what that means, anyway) because I am pretty computer illiterate, so I was calling the data systems guy here in our office, demanding to know what was going on?!?#$?
After making them check everything, and trying to get on to TDK on everybody else’s computer, the data systems guy finally told me that the problem may be on the other side (?) I did have to calm down a bit, but my hysteria was overwhelming.
Thank goodness we are back on track (or line, actually).
