You are right. My cat (a boy) was named Misty Mittens when he was very young, we thought that he was a girl!! But, when we took him to the vet I remarked that she was such a good girl and he turned to me and said, “Your good girl is actually a good boy!” OOPS!! Since Misty Mittens is not a very masculine name I wanted to name him Mr. Misty (like the Dairy Queen treat) but he is now called Reggie, short for Reginald (very masculine). What name do you think is better?

I shouldn’t even be LOOKING at other kits today–it’s my baby Snicker’s first birthday!!! well I have a new cat rescue here, if you remember I mentioned about a month ago during the blizzard I had a new face show up at feeding time. Well I had not seen the cat for a while so figured he must of moved on. well caught him this morning he must of got in a fight with something his right eye must of gotten scratched and it is all clouded over and puffy. He is frightened but not totally wild he must of had some human contact in the past. I got him in the house in one of my big dog crates( big enough for a large shepherd) he has plenty of room to move around. my cats have all went up to greet him and he didnt get to upset just some quite growling. this sounds promising to me hopefully he wont be to hard to tame down being blind in one eye now he wouldnt have a chance outside. other then the eye he seems healthy I got a pretty close look at him in the trap. going to call the vet in the morning.

Athena what a great day. So glad you were able to get the poor baby. Maybe he was a drop off or abandoned instead of a feral. Hopefully the vet can do something about the eye. Maybe if its not to far gone he can save it. These excess cats and kittens are such a sad story. Thank goodness for people like you.

Hope his eye is getting better - my Mike has only one eye now - several years ago he had a border/territory dispute and got a scratch - by the time I realized it he was blind - my vet said part of the eye moved forward - I was assured it does not hurt him and he is fine - does not seem to be affected by less vision.

I am really bummed out this weekend. When I came home from work on Friday I discovered one of my feral cats dead in my neighbors yard. She had given birth to 2 kits in June ‘04 in my rose garden-one calico and one gray. I captured the calico, she’s my Patches. I got her mom, the gray, and 2 others trapped and neutered through AZ Cats, the local TNR group. “Patches’ Momma”, as I called her, was always special to me. About 2 weeks ago, she disappeared, so I was worried and kept looking for her. I guess she was at least 4 years old, I know I was able to give her a better life even though so short.

I’m so sorry about Patches’ Momma. I’m sure you made her life better by giving her regular meals and having her spayed. Most outdoor cats don’t live past 3 years of age.

My favorite ferals also died. One was Dot, I have 3 of her last litter Max, DeeDee and Pixie. Her and baby Bandit disappeared and are assumed dead. Then my very sweet Roma had her litter last Easter Sunday and 7 weeks later stopped coming for her meals. I knew she was either very sick or dead. Three weeks later my big feral Brutus brought 4 babies to my patio for dinner. I know they are Roma’s kids and they are now my Rosie, Charley, Cuddles and Shy. I was never able to trap Dot or Roma for spaying and they paid the price. I think the hardship of motherhood is too much for the ferals.

Pretty kitty!

Hey guys, I’ve got a puzzle for those of you with long-haired kits. We’ve got a newcomer to the shelter who is a long-haired tortie, and her coat is a MESS! She’s got huge matted hairballs all over her — I took a comb to her for as long as she would let me, but I barely made a dent. Anyone got a product or you recommend for dealing with this kind of problem?

Comment by Athena
2007-04-01 21:28:57

with my longhair cats it they get mats I try and pull them apart into smaller mats with my fingers, pull them sideways not pulling away from the cat, just keep pulling them into smaller mats until I can comb out the small pieces

Comment by Jennifer
2007-04-01 21:31:10

Honestly? Sometimes you just have to cut them out. Mom had to do that to a couple of Persians she’s rescued and fostered. Good luck.

Comment by Sandi from Mt
2007-04-01 23:38:36

My Tessie has short hair but it has the fine undercoat and she can get bad mats. I got a pair of scissors at Pet Smart that has the end blunted so I am in no danger of cutting her. Sometimes I just have to cut at the mat until I can get it all out

I had a friend with a long haired cat that had her shaved - at least partially - every year to get out the matted hair. I am lucky, my long hair doesn’t have that fine underneath hair that gets all matted. AND she lets me brush her as much as I want. All I have to do is show her the brush and she will jump in my lap.

Dove maks a spray leave in hair conditioner that might help. Spray and try and comb or pull apart the matted areas.

A good thought, except she runs at the sound of the spray bottle. Poor thing is very skittish and may well have been abused.

try a baby detangler, safe for babies so should be safe for cats.

Comment by MerD in Colorado
2007-04-02 13:57:55

There is also a product called “Mane and Tail”. It is the most awsome detangler and conditioner ever. It is a horse product, and natural. You can dilute in a dish and only put your fingers in to rub it on the mats. THen you can use it on your hair, makes a great ovenight conditioner, or daily conditioner if diluted out enough. I have used it for years…. Although I think I would cut the mats in your kits fur first, and use it on a regular basis to keep the small ones from forming into big ones.

Try putting the liquid in a tall glass and dip the comb in the glass then you won’t have to spray.
