Actually, it is called the United Kingdom due to the Unification Bill of 1704, resulting in an “organic” union of the kingdoms of Scotland and Ireland, in the person of James I.

I knew that British Studies major woud come in handy one day-

Oh, I forgot: Constantinople was changed to Istanbul after the Fourth Crusade and the ultimate Islamic victory over the Christian kingdom of Constantine, one of the last Holy Roman Emperors.

New Amsterdam was lost by the Dutch to the Stuarts, and James, Duke of York (later James II, deposed by the Dutch rulers William and Mary - how ironic), was Lord High Admiral at the time (his brother, Charles II was king). As a result of the victory, New Amsterdam was re-named after the Duke, New York.

I have been doing a little research on Ragdolls and Maine coons.

I got her from Emerisle Ragdolls just outside of York. When I did my research, I noticed a lot of breeders who did more than one kind of cat often had Raggies with Maine Coons. And here I am with a Raggie and a Coon! When I first got the Coon boy, Minstrel, I got a little Birman girl, Skittles, at the same time from the same breeder. She died last month very unexpectedly and I just couldn’t go on, so Pixel was an attempt at coping. I know it was not the cleverest thing to do toget another cat so soon, but it just hurt so much. It’s turning out well though, Pixie is a wonderful girl and she really is helping me cope. She’s no replacement obviously, but I do think she is a worthy successor.

Anyway, back to the point, I would definitely recommend Coons and Raggies together. They get on very well from what I have seen!

I may live in the U.S. but i am looking all over at breeders, so I can get the best from the best. Thank you again.

***NYC couple hail cab for 2,400-mile ride***

NEW YORK - Betty and Bob Matas have retired and are moving to Arizona, but like many New Yorkers they don’t drive, and they don’t want their cats to travel all that way in an airliner cargo hold.

Their solution: “Hey, cabbie.”

They met taxi driver Douglas Guldeniz when they hailed his cab after a shopping trip several weeks ago.

They got to talking about their upcoming move, and “we said ‘Do you want to come?’” said Bob Matas, 72, a former audio and video engineer for advertising agencies. “And he said ‘Sure.’”

It was initially a gag, Matas said, but as they talked over the ensuing weeks it became reality.

They plan to leave Tuesday on the 2,400-mile trip to Sedona, Ariz., with Guldeniz driving his yellow SUV cab 10 hours a day for a flat fee of $3,000, plus gas, meals and lodging.

They’re getting a break. The standard, metered fare would be about $5,000 — each way, according to David Pollack, executive director of the Committee for Taxi Safety, a drivers’ group. But city Taxi and Limousine Commission rules direct drivers and passengers to negotiate a flat fare for trips outside the city and a few suburban areas.

It’s also a good deal for Guldeniz.

“This job is not easy, and I want to do something different,” said Guldeniz, 45, who has been driving a taxi for two years. “I want to have some good memories.”

The Matases will ride in relaxed comfort in Guldeniz’s sport utility vehicle while their cats ride in the back in their travel cases. A mover will haul their belongings.

“It’s a little unusual, but it will be fun,” said Betty Matas, 71, a retired executive administrative assistant.

I’ll accept images of kittens I know to be under a year old, but if I think they look older or I’m just not sure (and yes, it’s hard to tell) I’ll generally pick smaller animals. In the end, 99% of pictures are rejected because a) they’re *obviously* cats, or b) because the pictures aren’t great.

It’s been 20 years since I had to fly with a pet, but I went with Delta when I moved from HI to GA and they treated both people and pets right. I have never had a complaint about their service.

While I have never sent pets on Southwest, they seem to have their act straight on everything else. Another airline with which I have never had a problem.

When it comes to sedatives, that issue is probably best settled between you and your vet. You two know your pets best!

I wish you well!

It’s been a few years, but I took 2 kittens on an American flight from Florida to Maine. At that time the airline only allowed 2 animals per cabin on the larger planes. Just check the individual airline for the current rules - might be available on their web sites.

We rescued a kitten on our annual vacation to our resort in Cancun last November. The staff at the Cancun airport were awesome (the ticket agents were taking pictures of his “passport” and the security agents were kind). We flew United. Make your reservations in advance, as most airlines only allow a limited number of pets in the cabin. Make sure the carrier fits under the seat. Our flight attendant was a little snippy (probably a dog person). Bandido did not need sedatives, he was better behaved than any of the kids on the flight. We put dog wee-wee pads in the bottom of the carrier in case of an accident, but he did not even use it until SF. BUT, make sure you have a harness and leash on each cat. When we came thru San Francisco, we had to take him out of the carrier to go thru security. And the security agent was an absolute vile bitch! Customs even took away his food. I will never go thru customs in SF again (or Miami either). And I will never, ever put a pet in cargo. I had a poor experience with Southwest about 18 years ago. When we picked up our cat (she had radiation treatment at UC Irvine, drove her there, but she had to stay 2 weeks ), her face was battered and cut and Scoundrel was traumatized for weeks. They left her on the tarmack (in August) between cages of 2 large dogs. Honestly, the animals are not treated any better than your luggage. Good luck on your trip.

Good morning, everyone!
I just came back from the vet with Bob. He hadn’t been feeling well for a few days, and was throwing up everything he ate on Saturday. Sunday he wouldn’t eat at all, but he started eating a bit yesterday, so I figured he was getting better. He’s been so lethartic, though, that I decided to go to the vet this morning. It seems he has a kidney infection! He hasn’t eaten any recalled food, but I’m still freaked out about his kidneys being infected. He had shots of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and some succutaneous fluids injected. After we left, I had to give him his first dose of antibiotic drops - he’s had it with me now!!! We’re going to see how he does on the meds, and if he’s not better in a few days, we’ll go back for bloodtests, x-rays etc. It’s so scary!
Poor Bob is sleeping on an office chair right next to me right now, totally wiped out!
Does anyone know anything about kidney infections in kitties?

Seems to be more common in male cats. That has happened with us. If taken care of early they normally recover well. Menden, my husbands first cat, had trouble through his whole life. When he had a problem we had to take him in and he would sometimes take antibiotics, although once he had to have a procedure because he was blocked. He did okay though. They inserted a catheter to break up the crystal blockage and he was fine. He did die of kidney failure but not until he was over 18 years old. Don’t give up on the little guy and know we are praying for a speedy recovery.

2007-04-10 16:28:20

I don’t have any advice on the kidney infection, but giving meds-now there I can help. Always give meds while the cat is on a slippery surface. Why? If they try to back peddle while you’re trying to get the meds down him, he hasn’t any grip and can’t get away as easily. The best way to get the liquid meds in is to just squirt it in and hold the mouth closed while blowing in the face. Seem weird but they have only two choices at that point-swallow or gag. The blowing encourages the swallowing. It seems a little extreem but you want him to get better and you can’t just ask him to take his meds.

Thanks everybody, for your advice and well-wishes - I’ve hugged Bob from all of you (though he’s still just sleeping - hasn’t moved since I put him on the chair when we got in to work two hours ago - guess the meds are making him drowsy, too).
I’m going to take your advise, Rosie and blow in his face when I give him his meds tonight. This morning, it seemed I ended up wearing more of it than he swallowed!!!!!

I am happy to hear that Bob is home with you and on the mend. As the vet recommended a special diet cat food? When my Freud had an infection, he lived another 15 years, but always had to be kept on the Science Diet prescription food. I’m not recommending ANY type of cat food, however, it’s whatever the vet recommends!

Actually the vet didn’t even mention food, which I thought was odd after all the recalls and kitties with the kidney problems? Anyway, when I asked him if I should feed him anything special, he said to let him eat anything he wants to eat. (Which has the boss’ beta fish VERY worried at the moment!!!!) He started eating a little of his old food again yesterday, so I guess I’ll keep feeding him that.

Sorry, just read your post. Purrs for your baby to get better.
Food plays a very big role in their well being. I really think a kitty with kidney problems needs to be on special vet food.
Maybe he can eat anything he wants (including beta fish) when he is sick but not long term.
If you possibly can please ask another vet..Hugs for your baby :)

Thanks, Evangeline!
When he’s better or when we get back to the vet, I will ask him to recommend a kidney-friendly food for Bob. I was feeding him Nutro Natural Choice dry kitten food at first, which he really liked. Then after that company started recalling other of their foods (but not Bob’s food), I decided to change to something else. I started him on Blue Spa for kittens and mixed it with his old food. Now that he hasn’t been feeling well and I’m trying to get him to eat, the Nutro food seems to be the most tempting to him.

I heard on CNN that right now the only link between all the recalled foods is wheat gluten So no food with that until the next bomb drops on us :(

What food doesn’t have wheat gluten in it? I’ve looked around and haven’t found any. Maybe I just didn’t look in the right place.

Great Dane, You may want to ask your vet about Science Diet Prescription K-D dry food. It is for cats with kidney problems.

Science Diet DRY uses corn gluten instead of wheat gluten. That is what I feed my babies.

the dry Nutro Natural Choice indoor formula also uses the Corn Gluten rather than wheat gluten. Big relief to me

Itchmo has an article or twelve about the danger of corn gluten, which is used as a natural insecticide. We and our pets are not out of the woods yet…

Good luck with Bob, my thoughts are with you. I don’t know anything about kidney infections, but my Skittles had polycystic kidney disease and she lived quite happily with it with special food and the daily pills. I hope your Bob can do the same for many more years.

Thanks, everyone, for your support!
Bob had just been lying next to me for some 6 hours, except for a visit to the litterbox, so I went and bought him some tuna. The smell woke him up, and he jumped down and sniffed at it, but wouldn’t eat it. Then he proceeded to jump back on “his” chair on then on the desk, where I keep a ziplock bag with a little dry food for him. He seemed mighty interested, so I put some out for him and he ate it all. Just about 10-12 pieces, but still! Funny how he chose his dry food over tuna!

Great Dane, that sounds very encouraging! I’m sure once the meds have a chance to kick in, he’ll be feeling much better. Kidney and bladder infections aren’t that unusual in boy kitties; you do want to watch him closely as he heals, though, to be sure he doesn’t develop a blocked urethra. I’ve been through these many times, and it sounds like your vet is doing all the right things. I’ll be praying that Bob recovers quickly and has no further problems. Hugs to you both!

Elaine, thank you very much for this post. My boys eat tuna on occasion, but maybe they will settle for another type of treat next time. Most recently, it was ham from Easter dinner.
