Eggo

Location: Olmsted Falls, Ohio, USA

EggoThis is Eggo relaxing on his rocker. We saw him at the shelter, but someone picked him before we could. We were very disappointed. We went back to the shelter the next week and he was back. The couple that adopted him found out they were allergic to cats and brought him back. So we scooped him up and brought him home. He’s a year old now and enjoys playing with his brother Luxor.

Darling Eggo looks a lot like my 18 year old Peebee. She is a dainty lady, just 7 pounds, never has been outdoors and is still very playful. She and her sister, Squeek, barely tolerate each other, even after all these years together. Peebee stands for “Precious Baby.” I hope Eggo has a good long life, too.

I’m curious - why did you name him Eggo ??? He is lovely, and your other cat is Luxor ??? I love to hear why/how people name their cats and would love to hear the story on these two. Still wondering what Dou Dou means from a few days past. It must be like “cher” for cherie the canjus say - yes - no ??

We named him Eggo because we used to have a cat named Waffle who we loved dearly. Eggo reminded me of him. I didn’t want to give him the same name, so I named him Eggo. Luxor is named for the Casino in Vegas. In ancient Egypt cats were worshipped, and we worship Luxor. Hope you get to see Luxor soon.

One my Tansey’s favorite toys in the whole world, are little rubber snakes. She chose that toy for herself, picked it out of our Halloween stuff (it was part of my Medusa costume one year). She was so little that when she would carry the snakie in her mouth, most of it was under her little kitten belly. Sometimes she would trip on it, but she never let go! She would play for hours if you would throw her special snakies for her.

We met with an oncologist from Johns-Hopkins last week and because of my husband’s immune deficiency, his dr. is on the fence about chemo. It greatly increases his risk of an infection and my hubby can’t fight them off well. He’s presenting it to a panel this week to get other doctors’ input. The cancer was in the second stage (lymphatic vessels) and the chance of recurrence is only improved by 4% with chemo.

***Duke Lacrosse Case Charges to Be Dropped***
April 10, 2007 — - The office of North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper will announce that he is dismissing all charges against three Duke Lacrosse players, ABC News has learned from sources close to the case.

The three players, Reade Seligmann, David Evans and Collin Finnerty, were facing charges of first degree kidnapping and first degree forcible sexual offense. The charges stem from an off-campus party on the night of March 13, 2006.

In the hours after the party, one of two dancers hired to perform for the players claimed she had been violently raped in a bathroom by members of the lacrosse team. The players had also been indicted for first degree rape, but that charge was dismissed on Dec. 22, 2006.

Special prosecutors from the Attorney General’s office took over the case after Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong recused himself in January, citing charges of unethical conduct filed against him by the North Carolina Bar. Since then, Jim Coman and Mary Winstead have examined the case from scratch, interviewing key witnesses and working through reams of evidence.

The reasons that will be cited for the dismissal are not yet known, though the case has been riddled with criticism and colored by controversy since its early months. Defense attorneys released documents showing the accuser changed key details of her story in the weeks and months after the alleged assault.

Legal analysts and forensic experts have criticized what they call a critically flawed photo identification lineup — a lineup that led to the identification and indictment of Evans, Finnerty, Seligmann. No DNA evidence was found matching any lacrosse players with samples from the rape kit, while DNA from unidentified men was found on the accuser’s body and clothing.

On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General confirmed to ABC News that his office had completed its investigation into the Duke lacrosse case. A press conference on the outcome of their inquiry is widely expected sometime this week, though members of that office have not yet revealed a date and time.

Oh, the DA wasn’t an idiot. He knew exactly what he was doing. He just thought he wouldn’t be caught.

There have been a few stories of other players from the team having job offers withdrawn because of the accusations - even though they weren’t accused of anything.

One of them said that the company told him that ‘they were afraid some of the women might feel uncomfortable having him working there after what happened.’ Even though, as well all know - nothing happened except a bunch of lies

It is just VERY important that a woman’s statement of rape is taken seriously…and VERY damaging to victims of rape everywhere when a woman makes a false accusation, let alone the individuals who are accused… This whole thing makes me feel ill…. Aggressive prosecuters with hidden agendas (or NOT so hidden agendas) can ruin lives, too. Whatever happened to gathering evidence BEFORE charges are brought? I wish I knew the truth of the situation…but it is so buried in bull**** that it will most likely always be sullied.

2007-04-11 18:16:48

Of course, Catrancher, it’s important to take any criminal complaint seriously but at the same time all should be approached with a sense of scepticism from an investigative standpoint.

An investigator should always assume that everyone is suspect until the facts are in and they he should assemble the case and make his conclusions.

Unfortunalty, the attitude is now one of “accuse, arrest, speak to the press, then investigate”

This happened to my husband. He had an affair, the woman found out he was marriend and accused him of rape. He was found not guilty, but we went through 2 years of *ell during the time for the trial. Why do people automatically assume that the woman doesn’t have an axe to grind?

Comment by CatRancher from Iowa
2007-04-11 19:46:48

Well, now, Instinct, I beg to differ. I don’t know which “women’s rights groups” you are referring to but the “sisterhood” I belong to pressed for changes in the law regarding whether or not the victim could be “asking” for it by dressing provocatively, walking down a dark street, etc. An error in a woman’s judgement or manner of dress may lead a man to assume (or hope) she wants sex, but does NOT mean she is asking to be a victim of a brutal assault. Let’s make that VERY clear. Clearly these strippers put themselves at risk and push the limit of our empathy. Let’s make that VERY clear, too. BUT, I agree with you whole-heartedly, that the very laws enacted to protect women who are victims of rape from being questioned about their moral “integrity,” are being abused by a few and leading us to question (and rightly so) the woman’s moral “intent.” Too many high profile or celebrity rape cases are being tried in the media — identities leak, accused and accusor are maligned before going to trial. It is hard enough to prove innocence or guilt in today’s blurred moral climate and to quote my dear old Dad, “opinions are like a**holes, everybody’s got one.” We can only teach our daughters to respect themselves and use good judgement and teach our sons to respect themselves and use good judgement. A drunken strip show is potential trouble for both.

There is another factor involved in the false accusations and the witch-hunt conducted by the so-and-so ex-DA. There is an enormous amount of animosity and jealously toward the exclusive and expensive University on the part of the much-poorer (and largely blue-collar townspeople.

The ex-DA is a “townie” (if you remember “Breaking Away”), and had an axe to grind based on his own prejudices. This is the most blatant case of reverse snobbery I think I have ever seen. Innocent lives have been brought close to ruin, if not outright ruined. The ex-DA needs to do some serious jail time. Merely being disbarred would be an insult to us all.

Well not to be devil’s advocate, because what those girls did was scandalous.

But let’s not lose sight of the fact that the lacrosse team is a bunch of idiots, which is pretty much what came out. Like lots of athletes, they do what they want, when they want and to whomever they want to do it to.

Yes, it was wrong for those dumb girls to do what they did and lie the way that they did.

But in light of the pampering these athletes have gotten over the years, it’s really hard for me to feel badly for them.

Ah, but HM, what did they do that was wrong? They hired a stripper.

Was it stupid, yes. Was it leagal, yes. The only thing done that was illegal was the ‘dancer’ filing a false police report and the DA for malicious prosecution.

In the case of the players, innocent until proven guilty was thrown out the door and they were expelled from college for something they didn’t do at all.

Would you feel better toward them if they were just middle class white guys who had hired a stipper?

So because they did something that was dumb and leagal they should be branded as rapists even though they are innocent of that?

Or is it becasue they come from money that they should be tarred and feathered for something they didn’t do?

But I guess what the stripper did was OK because she is a poor single mom, huh?

It was OK she lied to the cops because she’s a single mom - how noble of her to work and go to school and support her child - as if there aren’t hundred of people out there doing just that without getting so drunk they pass out and scream rape so they don’t end up in jail for pulbic intoxication

Comment by Huddy's Mama
2007-04-11 16:19:29

No…I never said that.

I just think that in light of the way they have behaved in the past I just can’t get upset that something happened that put them in a bad light because they don’t seem like good people to begin with.

The fact that they come from money means nothing to me because, quite frankly, money doesn’t mean a lot to me to begin with and I’ve been on both sides of the money spectrum i.e., from money coming out of every orifice in my body to being a homeless shlepp sleeping under a bridge.

Hell, innocent people get into trouble all the time. Just ask all these people that have been exonerated in Dallas recently after spending DECADES in Texas prisons.

Okay, everyone back to their corners! There’s enough blame to go around. No, the boys did not rape that girl and yes, she filed a wrongful suit. No, they should not have expelled them for a crime they didn’t commit but purhaps the scandle was the straw that broke the camels back for the dean. If we had young men behaving like that on our campus I am sure the same thing would have been done. The alcoholic partying alone would be grounds. No one is innocent in this mess. In time purhaps these boys will recover their reputations BUT only if they clean up their lives and live the straight and narrow. Is it fair? No but who said life is fair? As for the girl she’s screwed! (ha ha?)

Agreed, I have a few friends who have had it happen to them which is why I am angry about this.

It hurts women who are reporting a real rape and hurts men who are falsly accused.

And Rosie is very correct, if the dean and the athletics department had taken corrective action against their parties and rowdy behavior in the first place we may have never ended up at this point. Instead they were more concerned with a winning season.

My point is that they threw these boys to the wolves before an investigation was even done. Someone needs to explain to me why we publish the names of someone who is just ACCUSED of a crime but not the name of the accuser?

Just because you’re accused doesn’t mean you’re guilty but with todays press (and even yesterdays) they will have you tried and convicted and every detail of your life on the internet by lunchtime.

People forget rape is about power, not sex. Too often people think that because a female is permiscuous (sp?) she can’t be raped. Or because a man is famous and/or good looking he wouldn’t need to rape. THAT is the misconseption that needs to be overcome. THAT is the truth that needs to be understood.

Well, as a criminal defense attorney, and one having defended accused individuals, this interchange has been very interesting. I am wondering where all this indignation on behalf of these young men is coming from?

Remember, this young woman did not file charges; she has no ability to file charges. That is the job of the prosecutor. She is merely a witness. It is up to the prosecuting branch of local government to determine whether or not the witness in this type of situation has a credible story, and/or if they believe they can win their case. Note, these two things are not the same thing.

I think there were several factors at work here, many of which have been mentioned. First, where is it guaranteed that one’s reputation is sacrosanct? I have done 77 felony trials in my career; over half of those have been acquittals. Most of those clients have been in custody during the pendency of their cases. What about their jobs? their families? their reputations? There are no guarantees that even if one if wrongfully accused, that one can be restituted back to the position you held before the accusation.

And that is all that it was - an accusation. Accusations can be made with very little evidence to back it up. These boys were actually very lucky that they had the wherewithal to force the prosecution to do further investigation and ultimately dismiss the case.

I would bet a thousand dollars ($1000.00) that if these boys were young African-Americans, living in any inner city/urban cite such as Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, Chicago, etc., and the victim had been a white woman, the case would have gone to trial, irrespective of DNA testing. Why? Because any prosecutor would have felt that they could have won that case (see note above).

Please do not delude yourself that such factors are NOT taken into consideration by prosecuting agencies. The whole tension between “Town and Gown” is another factor. I went to undergraduate school in New Haven, CT., and the tension there was rife, most of it couched in deep resentment toward the brutal power these universities wield against the town population.

The benign tolerance that large universities have toward the “rambunctious antics of our young men” is another factor. If the victim at Duke had been a co-ed, chances are the incident may have never come to light at all. It would have brushed under the rug, “for the good of the school”.

There are so many factors to be considered, and it is way too easy to make these boys angels and demonize the victim, and vice versa. It may true that these young men may suffer some long term consequences from this incident, but nobody said life was easy or fair. In the law, there is a concept known as “assuming the risk”. It is a concept that illustrates the situation of one accepting the responsibility - ALL the responsibility -for your actions, even though consequences that you did not foresee. These young men were drinking and they hired a stripper - both illegal acts. I say they assumed the risk of something going terribly awry, and they should consider themselves lucky that it may only be a loss of face, rather than one of them dead from alcohol poisoning, or violence done to one or more of them and that woman.

This was not an easy situation, and hopefully, everyone concerned will learn some valuable lessons from it, although with all the molly-coddling that these young men have been receiving, I am afraid that they will in no way believe that they did ANYTHING wrong or ill-judged. And wouldn’t that be the ultimate tragedy?

“So drunk they pass out and cry rape?” Last I heard, having sex with someone who is passed out and not able to consent to sex IS RAPE!!!!!!

As a victim of a sexual assault, I cannot fathom why in the world someone would report this horrific crime unless it actually happened–the intrusiveness to both body and soul is like another crime in and of itself. Many women don’t report sexual assaults in fear that they won’t be believed. THIS WOMAN’S NAME SHOULD BE PUBLISHED just so she can hear from the thousands of women/men/children she has betrayed.

What a sweet little waffle.

I would like to ask the TDKers to please say a prayer or send good energy to the cat I found last night. On my way home last night I found a cat in the middle of the road right before the highway starts. He had obviously been hit, but was still alive. I pulled over and called the Police Department Animal Control. They came to take care of the cat and sent me home. I was crying hysterically and barely slept all night. All I could think about was how cold it was last night and how it was all alone on the road in pain and I could do nothing to make that pain go away. I have cried alot in the past 12 hours. I hugged and petted my babies as much as I could and Tiger let me use him as a pillow for awhile. I called the PD a few times to find out any information, but all they could tell me was that they had taken care of hthe cat. So I do not know the outcome and I hope at least he is no longer in pain.

Bless your heart for saving the little kitty. I get so sad every time I see an animal on the side of the road, who didn’t make it because of the carelessness of a human. I will pray for the kitty, that he is no longer in pain.

Yes, bless you for your kindness. Even if he didn’t make it, he left this plane knowing that there is love in this world even for a hurt and homeless kitty like him. You gave him a great gift.
