D’arcy

Location: Manila, Philippines

DThis is our Himalayan kitten D’arcy in her favorite spot - the top of her scratching post! Sometimes we even catch her falling asleep while still trying to keep her balance. When my girlfriend and I bought her she had a really bad cold and lots of fleas but since then she’s managed to become an active and healthy cat.

Thank you and thank you all for your kind prayers and thoughts on Monday. After 5 really rough days it was so nice to get home to the kits. At least until the very rotund Emma decided that she needed to sleep all over me last night and “massage” my bladder! the other two stuck pretty close to us both and offered kitty comfort.

Years ago I had a cat named Buddy who would perch on the head of my Budha, so we started calling him Gutama Buddy. When Buddy became an adult very large (black Persian mix) cat he would still like to perch on Budha but because he was so big he would have to reach around and hold on to Budha’s chin. It looked as if he were wearing a fur hat with eyes! Too funny. D’Arcy reminds me of him, seeing her sitting up there like that. I bet when she’s older that post will look like a fuzzy lolly pop!

Yes, the second eyelid acts as a protectant. Sometimes you see it when kitty is just waking up, but if it’s prominent, it’s an indicator that something may be wrong. Sometimes it’s nothing; a slight cold or irritant in the eye, but it can also indicate something more serious.

Comment by Rosie in SA
2007-04-12 19:40:07

Not to get too technical but the second eyelid is that thingy in the corner of the eye, like where tears come from on a human.

D’arcy knew, even from a young age, that she belonged on a pedestal…
I want to nibble those tiny ears!
Speaking of the pet food mess (when aren’t we?), you really want to see what Menu Foods is up to on their corporate parent’s webpage:
http://www.evanmorris.com/weblog/2007/04/get_us_out_of_here.html
Don’t miss the full name of that corporate parent, or the blogger’s comment under the pic.
The blogger in this case is my brother, who has even more cats (12) than I do (7). He thinks the kitten in the pic looks dead; I think it looks like it’s saying “My bowl is full of dead bugs!”
(let’s see who gets that old reference…)
Even if you only have one cat, you’ll identify with this account of why you should never do the dishes by hand:

MORE on the pet food disaster, from the BUSINESS section of today’s New York Times:
…There are strong indications that Xuzhou Anying, a company with a main office that seems to consist of just two rooms and an adjoining warehouse here, possessed substantial supplies of melamine and even sought to buy quantities of it over the Internet.
If melamine was intentionally blended into the wheat gluten, the findings could become a vast setback for agricultural trade between the United States and China, a country known for lax food-safety regulations.

Cute! Back in the 60’s we had a cat door and cat perch in our garage and our cat Mitzi brought home a cat. It turned out to be a Himalayan who escaped from his owners at a local motel. Somehow she found her way to us and came in the cat door! I found out she was ‘lost’ by reading the lost and found in our local paper. Delilah was reunited w/her owners and other their other pet Sampson.

I add that the motel was over 5 miles from us and across a very busy hiway!

***Listerine Rinse Recalled For Contamination Recall Affects Glacier Mint, Bubble Blast Flavors***

WASHINGTON — The maker of Listerine is recalling one of its rinses after tests showed it was contaminated with microorganisms.

A Johnson & Johnson spokeswoman said a company unit is recalling 4 million bottles of the recently launched Listerine Agent Cool Blue plaque-detecting rinse, marketed primarily for use by children.

The recall affects the Glacier Mint and Bubble Blast flavors.

The company said tests showed contamination, despite the use of preservatives. However, the company said there have be no reports of health problems from the contamination.

The affected rinses have been sold in supermarkets, drug stores, mass merchants and other retail outlets, and it’s sold to dental professionals’ offices nationwide. Johnson & Johnson is contacting dental professionals and retailers directly as part of their recall notification process.

Consumers are advised to stop using the product and throw it away. Consumers can get full refund by calling the company at 1-888-222-0249 and mailing in the back label, including the UPC code.

Because we all know how much the UN loves the United States…

****U.N. Wants NYC Cops for Peacekeeping****

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday whether some of the city’s police officers could be deployed with U.N. peacekeeping missions.

Recruiting police for the U.N.’s 16 peacekeeping missions around the globe has been historically challenging.

“New York City has one of the most diversified police forces around and I think the secretary-general would like to explore possibilities,” U.N. deputy spokeswoman Marie Okabe said before the meeting. “Getting police to join peacekeeping operations is one of the high priorities for the U.N.”

Bloomberg left the meeting without speaking to reporters. Stu Loeser, the mayor’s spokesman, said his office had no comment.

New York City has recently fallen short of its police recruiting goals so it’s unclear if it would have any officers to spare for international peacekeeping.

The U.N. peacekeeping department said 321 American police officers are currently involved in missions abroad, primarily training local police. Of those, 225 are in the Kosovo region of Yugoslavia, and others are in Haiti, Liberia and Sudan.

Why? Why? Why? does the UN think they have the right to further take advantage of NYC??? As a former NYer, it won’t happen! NYC police are for the city, by definition, NYC has no money to police the world! *steps off soapbox, goes back to work.*
