Capitol Hill Kittens

Location: Washington DC, USA

That was my first thought too! Dang, now I’m going to have to come up with a different poem. Original idea:

One of these kits
Is not like the others
Methinks just maybe
They have different mothers
But it doesn’t matter
They’ve decided to be brothers
I would keep them all
If I had my druthers
But my backpack is not quick
and they have wound up in another’s

Matt Geiger (? sp) is the name you are looking for and yes I live in the Woodfield community right across the street from him. He no longer has the Bison. One got out and created quite a bit of havoc for county officials. He sold the land and now there are new mansions being built in a community they are calling Buffalo Run. So where are you now?

Just west of Houston. My kids’ piano teacher lived in Woodfield, and I would spend one afternoon per week at her house. I know your neighborhood well. I also remember when th bison escaped–the Pinellas Sheriff’s Dep’t was in a tizzy for 3 days! Didn’t realize that Matt Geiger sold out, though.

Here is the recipe. Hope you enjoy!

FIVE FLAVOR POUND CAKE
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
3 cups granulated sugar
5 eggs, beaten
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch salt
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon coconut extract
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1 teaspoon rum extract
1 teaspoon butter flavor extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 325*F. Grease a 10 inch tube or Bundt cake pan. In small bowl
combine flour, baking powder and salt; set aside. In a mesuring cup combine
milk and 1 teaspoon of each of the 5 extracts; set aside. In mixing bowl cream
butter, shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and beat
until smooth. Beat in flour mixture alternately with milk mixture, beginning and ending
with flour mixture. Spoon batter into prepared pan. Bake for 1 1/2 hrs or until cake
test done (knife inserted in cake comes out clean). Let cake cool for 5 mins. and
then pour 1/2 of glaze over cake (while still in pan). Let stand another 5 mins. and
then turn cake out of pan onto cake plate. Slowly spoon remaining glaze onto
top of hot cake. Cool completely before serving.

Five Flavor Glaze for cake
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon coconut extract
1/2 teaspoon rum extract
1/2 teaspoon butter flavor extract
1/2 teaspoon lemon extract
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In saucepan combine sugar, water and the 5 extracts. Bring to a
boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved.

Fruity cocktails count as health food, study finds

A fruity cocktail may not only be fun to drink but may count as health food, U.S. and Thai researchers said on Thursday.

Adding ethanol — the type of alcohol found in rum, vodka, tequila and other spirits — boosted the antioxidant nutrients in strawberries and blackberries, the researchers found.

Any colored fruit might be made even more healthful with the addition of a splash of alcohol, they report in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

Dr. Korakot Chanjirakul and colleagues at Kasetsart University in Thailand and scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture stumbled upon their finding unexpectedly.

They were exploring ways to help keep strawberries fresh during storage. Treating the berries with alcohol increased in antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity, they found.

Any colored fruit or vegetable is rich in antioxidants, which are chemicals that can cancel out the cell-damaging effects of compounds called free radicals.

Berries, for instance, contain compounds known as polyphenols and anthocyanins. People who eat more of these fruits and vegetables have a documented lower risk of cancer, heart disease and some neurological diseases.

The study did not address whether adding a little cocktail umbrella enhanced the effects.
