Have been working on a poetry unit and can’t get the kids interested because they say “no one writes poetry” so I have to ask can I take a poem into them and show them that poetry can touch a life everyday?

Comment by Ivory Bill
2007-04-30 11:05:38

You are welcome to use anything I have written if you think it will inspire anyone. I would suggest yesterday’s poem, though, rather than this one.

I actually kind of agree with the kids. Ever since Rod McKuen (sp?), the art form has been non-existent in popular culture. His stuff was so vapid that it kind of made everyone give up.

Sox’s mom,

I am teaching poetry now. I did the same unit last year, and at first, the kids groaned. Then they realized two things: 1. The “music” they like (rap and hip-hop) are VERY rhyme driven–if you tell ‘em to “drop it like it’s hot,” they can rhyme all day. and 2. Poetry is NOT all “moon, June, spoon.” When you introduce them to e.e. cummings and William Carlos Williams’ “This is Just to Say,” the kids get all excited to learn that they can break all the grammar rules they spent all year learning and get away with it.

Also, I have them look up poetry on the Internet about famous people and turn it in. Yeah, everything I got was about Tupac and Selena, but still, the kids were actually reading and discussing poetry, and some of it wasn’t half bad.

It’s all in the presentation.

What a shame! I can tell you that people DO write poetry — I do, anyway! In fact, it’s one of my passions, to the point that I now have an MFA in poetry writing. As someone else has commented, poetry is not all “moon, June, spoon” — in fact, good poetry is nothing like that. As for Rod McKuen, mentioned by another poster…YECH! I agree with you, his stuff was AWFUL! Not poetry at all, IMHO.

Sox’s Mom, how old are the kids you’re teaching? I might be able to recommend some poets for them to read, but first I would need to know their approximate ages, in order to recommend poets they might like and understand….

Remember the discussion on ants, someone (sorry, can’t remember who), suggested bay leaves. I put 1 bay leaf near the area the tiny ants come in to invade my kitchen. First day I saw one ant. Last night I left my ice cream bowl on the counter without washing it. It should have been filled with the invasion but this morning not one ant. We have had some heavy rains and maybe they were washed away temporarily, so I can’t say for sure it’s the bay leaf. Tonight I will remove it and leave another bowl (good excuse to eat more Edy’s Raspberry Chip Royale) and see what happens in the morning.

That was me! My mama (i’m 50 -the baby) lives in Orlando, Fl., and has complained for years about ants in the house and I told her to use the bay leaves but apparently she’d rather have the ants! When we moved into our house we saw ants coming up thru the carpet in the basement - it was so wierd to see - and put a leaf right on the spot we saw them and they were gone in hours. I am glad to know that at least I do know something that is appreciated (unlike the unappreciation I get from my kids - because I’m too old or from my mama because I’m too young to know anything!) Charlie is so cute - another cat from my home state!

“At least 45 people are reported to have eaten pork which came from a hog farm in Ceres, California in the United States where pigs from the American Hog Farm were fed pet food which was recalled because it was contaminated with the chemical melamine.

So far none of the individuals have experienced signs of illnesses, but
it is not known what effect the chemical, when ingested, has on humans because no major study has taken place on melamine.”

This is scary for our pets and ourselves too. I am wondering how this happened. I mean I read the articles, but I still can’t believe it was this easy to get a contaminant in. I just met a lady who is just devistated because she feels immense guilt for killing her cat because she fed him poison. I wish she could see there was no way to know, and she is not responsible for his death.
