MC - Bobby didn't introduce Whitney to drugs. That is a common misconception. She was doing drugs before she met him and she was doing them after they broke up. Unfortunately, she had a terribly addictive personality. All that being said, RIP Whitney. Hope she finds the peace on the other side that she never managed to find here.

It is sad. Unfortunately, she was her own person with much power and money. She could have walked away from Bobby Brown or said no to the drugs. In the end they were her choices to make, good or bad. The pressure to remain on top much have been so intense she couldn't withstand the pressures. May she rest in peoac away from the demons that haunted her.

Very tragic! She was just 48. Elvis, MJ, and now Whitney Houston.

"I wanna dance with somebody", "I will always love you"...my favorites. What a glorious voice! She raised the bar so high that very few could sing like her. Even in India her voice is considered as a benchmark.

RIP Whitney Houston.

I was shocked to hear these news today. So sad to lose these great figures we grew up on, makes you realize how the world you knew is changing. Not sure it is fair to blame Brown while we are not aware of all the details yet. But it can remind us to remember and appreciate the great artists still living and not let them be forgotten and feel irrelevant with the rising of new talents (talents?).
No doubt she was a classic diva with huge voice and political agenda who didn't use her sexuality in a provocative way to succeed and this world need more woman like her.
Bless her soul.

The thing is, Krazikat is that our body makes the cholesterol we need. The more we try to control/reduce it, the more it will make. It is a necessary part of life and you are right, our brains need it! The more important factor is not the number but the TYPE of cholesterol. The big fluffy kind is the one we want :)

I haven't read all of the articles yet JBBM but I am so glad someone has provided some good info on cholesterol. It is an important part of cell wall strength and protects transmissions of signals through the nerves. It is believed that some memory problems are a result of too little cholesterol. ( I had several articles on this years ago but can't find them now :( ) Another strange fact, I have always eaten waaaay too much high cholesterol food and my levels are just perfect according to my doctor. Go figure. Definately keep a healthy amount of cholesterol in your diet.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but these babies just touched my heart. It is always hard to see any animal, stuck in an Animal Control facility, literally facing death, but even as long as I've been doing this rescue thing, the hardest for me to see are the ones who came from a home. They just seem so "shell shocked" and out of their element. It just breaks my heart to see the fear such as I see in several of the ones shown above. Please look at their faces and see if you can possibly squeeze one (or several!!!) into your programs. Please direct all inquiries about these cats to Clayton Co. Animal Control at 770-477-3684<tel:770-477-3684>. - Robin Rawls - Clayton Co. Humane Society

Other sweet kitties facing death by heart-stick here - most kitties die here!

Here is some general information about cholesterol.

Total cholesterol is a horrible marker for heart health and should not be used as a reason to push potentially dangerous pills. Just as many people who have heart attacks have so-called "normal" or "low" cholesterol as so-called "high" cholesterol. Total cholesterol is pretty meaningless and not been shown to correlate well to heart health. Interestingly, though, lower cholesterol levels have been correlated with higher incidence of hemorrhagic stroke.

Cholesterol is a vital substance in the body. Particularly as we age, lower levels become associated with higher incidence of diseases such as infection, cancer, Alzheimer's and even heart failure. Hence, it's not unusual for cholesterol levels to raise some as we age (as a protective measure.) Of course, statin use is also associated with higher incidence of these diseases, as well.

Keep in mind, too, that the LDL number you get from a regular lipid draw is not measured. It's calculated by a not so great formula. If your triglycerides drop (a common occurrence on a low carb diet,) then the formula spits out a higher LDL number. So, that formula tells you nothing much about your LDL number. Nor does it tell you if your body is producing mostly healthy and useful (pattern type A) LDL particles or not so healthy ones that could be associated with problems (pattern type B.) If you have mostly pattern type A LDL particles (a good thing,) a regular lipid draw which calculates LDL is also likely to overestimate the LDL number. A VAP test will not only measure your LDLs, but will also tell you the particle size. If you want to know anything meaningful about your LDLs, get a VAP test. Healthy LDLs are very important and do good work in the body. They are not "bad."

A low carb diet higher in fat (especially saturated fat) helps to lower triglycerides, increase HDLs and increase levels of healthy LDL particles and decrease levels of unhealthy LDL particles. But, it can take 6 months or more to see the full results.

Remember, too, that the so-called "healthy" ranges for lipids have been lowered several times over the years. They have been lowered by a panel comprised of people with strong ties to the pharmaceutical companies, despite the fact that lowering cholesterol has not been shown to lower incidence of heart disease.

Your lipid ratios are a better indicator of a healthy lipid system than simply looking at "total cholesterol." It is more than possible to have numbers outside of the contrived ranges, yet have a healthy lipid system with good ratios and lots of pattern type A LDL particles. Conversely, it is also more than possible to have your numbers all "in range," and yet have an unhealthy lipid system, poor ratios and primarily pattern type B LDL particles. Personally, I'd rather have the first choice, even if it means my numbers aren't in line with the contrived so-called "healthy" ranges.
