Jetta and Boo Boo's Mom on "great info on cholesterol (fit and healhy kits 2012!)"

Here is some general information about cholesterol.

Total cholesterol is a horrible marker for heart health and should not be used as a reason to push potentially dangerous pills. Just as many people who have heart attacks have so-called "normal" or "low" cholesterol as so-called "high" cholesterol. Total cholesterol is pretty meaningless and not been shown to correlate well to heart health. Interestingly, though, lower cholesterol levels have been correlated with higher incidence of hemorrhagic stroke.

Cholesterol is a vital substance in the body. Particularly as we age, lower levels become associated with higher incidence of diseases such as infection, cancer, Alzheimer's and even heart failure. Hence, it's not unusual for cholesterol levels to raise some as we age (as a protective measure.) Of course, statin use is also associated with higher incidence of these diseases, as well.

Keep in mind, too, that the LDL number you get from a regular lipid draw is not measured. It's calculated by a not so great formula. If your triglycerides drop (a common occurrence on a low carb diet,) then the formula spits out a higher LDL number. So, that formula tells you nothing much about your LDL number. Nor does it tell you if your body is producing mostly healthy and useful (pattern type A) LDL particles or not so healthy ones that could be associated with problems (pattern type B.) If you have mostly pattern type A LDL particles (a good thing,) a regular lipid draw which calculates LDL is also likely to overestimate the LDL number. A VAP test will not only measure your LDLs, but will also tell you the particle size. If you want to know anything meaningful about your LDLs, get a VAP test. Healthy LDLs are very important and do good work in the body. They are not "bad."

A low carb diet higher in fat (especially saturated fat) helps to lower triglycerides, increase HDLs and increase levels of healthy LDL particles and decrease levels of unhealthy LDL particles. But, it can take 6 months or more to see the full results.

Remember, too, that the so-called "healthy" ranges for lipids have been lowered several times over the years. They have been lowered by a panel comprised of people with strong ties to the pharmaceutical companies, despite the fact that lowering cholesterol has not been shown to lower incidence of heart disease.

Your lipid ratios are a better indicator of a healthy lipid system than simply looking at "total cholesterol." It is more than possible to have numbers outside of the contrived ranges, yet have a healthy lipid system with good ratios and lots of pattern type A LDL particles. Conversely, it is also more than possible to have your numbers all "in range," and yet have an unhealthy lipid system, poor ratios and primarily pattern type B LDL particles. Personally, I'd rather have the first choice, even if it means my numbers aren't in line with the contrived so-called "healthy" ranges.

It gives some perspective from those involved in the shooting of many of the big cats, bears, and such. This is just another reason why private pet owners shouldn't own exotic animals.

How it works:
A new "To Be Destroyed" list comes out every night between 5:30-6:30 pm. If there is a cat or kitten you can adopt or foster call the ACC number if it is BEFORE 7pm- adoptions stop at 6pm or so. You will HAVE to pick up that cat first thing in the morning. They will not hold the cat-- they will kill it. The only way they will hold it for 24 hours is if an approved rescue calls that ...See More

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but these babies just touched my heart. It is always hard to see any animal, stuck in an Animal Control facility, literally facing death, but even as long as I've been doing this rescue thing, the hardest for me to see are the ones who came from a home. They just seem so "shell shocked" and out of their element. It just breaks my heart to see the fear such as I see in several of the ones shown above. Please look at their faces and see if you can possibly squeeze one (or several!!!) into your programs. Please direct all inquiries about these cats to Clayton Co. Animal Control at 770-477-3684<tel:770-477-3684>. - Robin Rawls - Clayton Co. Humane Society

I found this very interesting. A hospice nurse has written about the greatest regrets she sees in her dying patients:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/6361021/The-five-biggest-deathbed-regrets

I imagine they are all things we would agree with but how hard it is to put them into practice.

She goes into more detail in her blog: http://www.inspirationandchai.com/Regrets-of-the-Dying.html

Okay, I know this is a silly posting but what the heck. When I was growing up, no one in movie or television land even knew where New Zealand was. We got left off many American maps of the world. Now, Peter Jackson's holiday/country home is just up the road from me in Matahiwi, Orlando Bloom gets spotted in Greytown and James Cameron (Avatar) has bought a farm down the road in Featherston. Well, actually two farms, including a dairy farm. Wonder what he's like at milking cows?

***PLEASE READ: NEW PROTOCAL 1/12/12:

From the Barrow Officers:

"All Applications and Rescues MUST have all paperwork into the Office no later than noon on the Tuesday before the scheduled PTS date. No other information will be accepted past that time or date. No other contact will be made until the Wednesday Afternoon, which will be done via email ONLY. There will be no guarantee that any animal will be here past any date, due to space restraints and the amount of animals received on a daily basis. If you or anyone is interested in any animal, please do not hesitate to place an application on the animal. Time is the enemy of our Shelter. The more time taken to consider an adoption or check multi emails on the same animal, the less time we have getting more animals out of our shelter to new and loving homes.

Please be considerate and realize that at most times it is 1 to 2 people answering emails; this takes time to read and respond to everyone. Phone calls are not returned due to time constraints; emailing is the only accepted means of communication at this time.

Please have all paperwork in order, which helps us handle each case swiftly and quickly.

Thank You
DHarper@barrowga.org - Senior Officer

Out-of-state Rescues and All Adopters: please request an application from the shelter via email to dharper@barrowga.org. Include ID numbers of animals when available. Applications can also be requested from the Barrow Buddies site after shelter hours.

**Euthanization takes place on Wednesdays commencing at 8:00 AM. All animals should be considered at risk and the ability to hold anyone beyond their allotted time is predicated on allowable space at the shelter based on new intakes that come in daily. To save a life, do not delay, The shelter requests, that rescue commitments & adoption application requests be received by 12 noon on the Tuesday prior to the euth date.
It's RAINING Cats at Barrow - Rescue, Adopt, Network to Help by 1/31 The last several weeks, there have been not too many cats in need at the shelter & now they are SLAMMED with many. The last 2 days, they have filled up just about to capacity."

I know looking at these pictures is upsetting but the more disgusted and outraged New Yorkers get at the way the city runs AC hopefully things can change.
Call the Mayor, help groups that rescue and foster. Sponsor and adopt Conway the movie star kitty may be dead or rescued. It is after 6 am when they start the daily killing. Isn't what I said disgusting.Daily people, who are they, take the lives of precious animals. I feel no understanding towards them. I feel pity for people who do this for a job They need to reframe their thinking as does the city of NY and pet owners.

SEATTLE -- The vice president of Costco announced his company will no longer buy or sell pork from an Iowa farm where an animal rights group recently videotaped severe abuse of pigs.

Craig Wilson, Vice President and General Manager of Costco, wrote in a statement Thursday that Coscto has no direct relationship with Iowa Select, the farm where Mercy for Animals shot the undercover video. However, Costco's pork supplier, JBS, announced they will severe all ties with Iowa Select.

Mo on "Purina - maggots, vomiting, "webbing""

There have been many complaints about purina food lately - http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/ralston.html if you want to read more details. In brief, people have been finding maggots/webbing in the food, and pets are vomitting and getting sick with some dying.

Yet Purina hasn't recalled due to this issue, how many pets have to DIE first, before they admit the problem?

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/natural_balance.html

A few complaints (again, no recall, but it should have been quite a while ago!):

1. I have two cats with autoimmune disorders and a third with vision loss and recovering from a hernia surgery. Do I really want any of the three vomiting and sick? Absolutely not. I feel that the company approach to this formula change is unacceptable and that consumers should be made aware that there is a change. How are they to know to wean their pets? This is so frustrating since I go to the extra expense of feeding my pets something that is supposed to be better quality than what the average pet owner buys in the grocery store.

2. My dog, Zissou has become very sick after eating the Natural Balance L.I.D (Lamb and Rice formula). The proof of purchase # is NBR080432AR exp: 31/AUG/2012.

He has been eating this formula for nearly three months but the very day and the first meal from this bag resulted in vomiting and runny stool. It has been deduced with the help of my vet after a near a week of a sick bud that it is the food that is tainted.

I would avoid this batch. To avoid future occurrences of this, I am switching brands. After doing additional research, it looks like I'm not the only dog owner that finds this company unreliable.
