Hello, Im new here. Im trying to find someone who maybe can help me find answers to a health problem in my moms kitten. She found a litter of 4 kittens, took care of them and got their shots, then eventually got rid of 3. She kept the 4th one because she didnt think he was well, because he stayed very small and had copper colored eyes, almost orange. Since then he has been fine, playing and eating everyday. He is now 8 months old and this morning he took a turn for the worst. He was unresponsive this morning so my parents rushed him to the vet. The vet listened to all his symptoms and looked through their books to come to the discission that he has a extra vein in his body that is causing toxic waste to stay in his liver. They say he will have to get surgery to remove the vein and even if he gets the surgery he may not make it. We have no clue what to do because we cant afford to pay for this surgery. We are wondering if anyone knows of a website where I can look up rare defects in kittens or if anyone can give us advice on what to do. We dont understand why it took 8 months for him to get deathly ill, this is why we want to look up more information about what the vet calls a Port vein. Please help us if you can. Any information is greatly appreciated

Yes, Taco is a purebred Ragdoll, and quite a handsome fellow. Panting is usually a sign of being too warm. Has he been to his first vet visit yet? That's where you can get advice.

I had Max (RIP) that was a Ragdoll mix. I don't remember that he panted very hard. Though I got him when he was 7 months old. What I remember is how beautiful he was and how he loved to drape himself around my neck. Ragdolls seem to be very mellow and loving. Be sure to brush him as he will get matts in the ruff around his neck, which is typical of Ragdolls or cats with longer fur. Can't wait to see a picture of your new baby.

I picked up Comet today. I plan to rename him Sunny because he is really more of a sunshine gold and he seems to respond very well to his new name. He is a BIG boy - he is 6-1/2 months old now but was 6.7 lbs at 4 months! I already love him and Ashton has met him face to face with no fighting. However, Sunny will stay in the bathroom most of the time for a while until they seem comfortable together. Ashton was not real sure of the situation at this point.

Hi Karma and welcome. Love the names of your pets! I don't think we have any other TDKers in Alaska - do keep us up to date with the seasonal changes and the wildlife around you - I would love to hear more about where you live. I'm down the other end of the world in New Zealand and live a couple of hours away from JCAT. I have a siamese (Dara) and a tabby (Ringo). Feel free to join in the chat on the Cafe or Nightshift (NS) threads.

Welcome to TDK Peg! Good luck with intergrating Comet into the family, can I recommend a product called Feliway? It's a synthetic feline hormone, and very good at easing stressful/anxious situations (for cats not for humans unfortunately!!). It's available in a spray, but I've found the plug in diffuser much, much better whenever I've used it. Keep us posted, and again, welcome out of the lurking shadows!!

Thank you all. Luckily, my husband gets out for good in July, so this is the only place I had to move. I don't mind the middle of nowhere so much as I hate Alaska. I'm not good with the cold (I'm from California, and when it hits 50 degrees, I'm complaining), and in the winter here, it gets to at least -50 for about 2 or 3 months. It will also be dark all the time for a month or two. I moved here in July and had cabin fever by September. I'm hoping having the new babies around will help. Training the puppy definitely takes up time, and the kitten is great for cuddling when my husband's not around.

Welcome Peg! Oh, Comet's a beautiful boy. I'm a sucker for orange boycats. (Any chance you could take sister Luna too?)

My first orange boycat, Sid (for Siddhartha) slept on my pillow from the first night we had him. I loved it and encouraged it. Even up to his last days, Sid would sleep on my pillow. The love of orange kitties is so deep, so unconditional, that you're going to have a special friend for many many years.

Your older kitty may not like the rambunctiousness of little Comet at first, but I think it's great to get an older kitty a young companion. Sometimes you might see the older one play like a kitten again, and it's so rewarding to see them act so much younger than their chronological age.

If you like, on Catster, there is a forum for older kitties, called "Olde Furts". I have an old furt: Tansey is 16. She was 10 when we got a kitten, and she still plays like a baby herself.
