Lisa, I bet they would be just as thrilled with a headless field mouse as a can of premium food! LOL My cats think the epitome of gourmet is one of those pre-cooked chickens at Kroger or Sams. You can get them for around $4.00. When I bring one in and the boys smell the aroma, they are all around my legs begging within seconds.

This brings to mind when I worked at Neiman Marcus for a few days last Christmas. There was a display of fancy dog items, including dog perfume (tiny bottle) for $85. There was dog nail polish for $15! I asked one of the women who works there, "Does anyone actually spend $85 on perfume for their dog?" She replied, with barely disguised contempt, "Yes, they do."

There is a specialty store here called Bark 'n' Purr. There isn't a single three ounce can in the store for less than a dollar. That is the tiny can!

I keep the girls on mid-price food--Iam's--because Misty is fat and CJ had such extensive intestinal distress when she was a baby. And cat food is one of the last things I'll give up.

But, like any mom, I'd love to be able to treat them with the super-gourmet foods I see at Bark 'n' Purr. Maybe that day will come.

The price of everything has gone up, why wouldn't pet food. Of course we could probably get it cheaper if they get some of the ingredients from China but would you feed anything that had ingredients from there?. Personally I don't much care about the price, my animals are worth every penny. I buy premium pet foods because they are just as economical because they feed better and in the end I will save on vet bills. The thing is the world has changed and we had all better get used to it.

I just purchased a 10 lb bag of Science Diet dry food, 10 cans of science diet wet cat food, 4 cats of progold wet cat food, 30 lb container of cat litter and a catnip plant and my bill was $65! I believe the dry food will last around two months as I have been only giving a 3/4 cup a day to each of my cats. This was all purchased at Petco. I haven't attempted to try Costco yet but may look into it for the cat litter.

Will throw my 2 cents in... As we all know, many of the grocery stores have their own brand label. Upon comparing the label ingredients, which were identical to the name brands, the store brand was considerably less,(this is pertaining to can cat food). For instance, the brand name of Fancy Feast is roughly $12.50 for 24,(3oz.) cans. The store brand is $8.50, with the exact ingredients(in order), the same can design, and the only difference is the packaging. It's not economically feasible for grocery stores to "produce" their own brand label products, so the major suppliers will supply them with the "name" brand goods, packaged with the store name. I believe, knowing the ingredients, with which you want for your furries, one should compare the higher priced brand names, to those of the "store" brand products. You may be surprised, and save a few $$$$ also.

Rebekah and I have 5 furbabies and a feral outside that we started feeding. We spend an average of $150.00 a month on can food, dry food, litter and treats. Plus we have Sarah's med. that is $25 a month. She also takes another one, steroid, but we only get it filled every other month and I don't know how much it is. I don't think it is much though. We have had to sacrifice several things for over a year now just to afford keeping these cats. We haven't had a haircut since last Christmas. Rebekah works in a law firm down town and always kept her nails done. But she hasn't had nails in almost 1 and 1/2 years now. I have one set of clothes, and Rebekah has maybe 4 or 5 sets. And I could go on and on, but I think you get my point.:) It's crazy. I don't know what people are going to do.

If anyone understands what you mean CW...it's me. lol. At one time I was taking care of 24 cats & I wasn't eating as well as they were. I've since, with the help of absolute angels I've met on TDK (& lots of prayers) managed to widdle them down to 13...14 if I count Knight (whom I haven't seen for over a week. Thru-out the years I've had a few insist on telling me I was simply killing my cats with the type of food I was giving them.

I've always fed them Friskies wet. I, for over 10 yrs. had fed them Chef's Blend kibble, until they changed the recipe. None of the cats liked the new stuff,so I had to find a food they all could & would eat. All my animals are at different age groups & have different quirks of need (some of the older have hard times with kibbles & some are only able to eat canned.

I add lots of love into each dish I fix up. And I'll tell you that if you really know your pets, you know what is right for them. I've been blessed with having happy, healthy & rambuncious cats that since have been adopted out.

It's ironic that the ones I lost over the Rainbow Bridge at much to young of age & wanted more time with them all, ended up being the precious little abandoned kits where they were discarded like garbage by the owners. I'm well under the "keeping my head above water" scenario.

But I can say that at least 10 of those rescues have only been blessed with having shots to keep them healthy. I'm so grateful I learned so much at home about caring for animals in a healthy way. I'm positive that knowledge helped & I'm proud to say with very careful tending to all my fuzzies needs, that not a single one died from issues I could have prevented.

So,I've always told my friends that they may be able to afford the fancy stuff, but,my babies do quite wonderful under the "cheap spread of food (Thank God). lol. I've even tasted a kibble or to so I could understand why they did or didn't like a specific kind. Frankly, kibble isn't too bad. But I won't be adding it to my diet anytime soon. lol

It's not any better over here. I estimate our weekly shopping bill has increased by £10-15, which is a lot over the month. Home fuel is up, mortgages are up, petrol is up - and we're asked to accept below inflation pay rises - so in effect, pay cuts. The outlook is not good for the foreseeable either.

As far as cat food goes, we pay about £45 for a bag of Science that lasts us two months (between three cats) - Bones' senior food costs about £6 a week.

If anyone been follwing the business news, it's really looking very pessimistic. The bail out of Lehman Brothers and the almost collapse of AIG .. gosh, when will this end. And the revolving credit used 8.5 billion to bail out AIG all comes from tax payers like us. I really wish there is a gleam of bright light in the near future.

With all the health benefits of companion animals, you would think we could get at least a partial dependent deduction on the tax roles.

Actually I find myself leaning more to the "Fair Tax" model.

I have been very fortunate to have neighbors that have been helping me with cat and dog food. I came home one afternoon, after getting paid only $25 for the week and thinking that I was going to have to spend all of it on dog and cat food instead of buying some groceries for myself, to find two large bags of science diet - one for my dog and one for the cats - that my neighbors had brought over. They also gave me two boxes of Whiskas pouches for the cats. This is after bringing over a large white garbage bag (I guess the original bag ripped open) of cat food. Thanks to my neighbors, I went from wondering how I was going to be able to afford food for the animals and food for myself to having enough food to feed the animals for quite some time.

I agree CW...it's really getting out of control. Depending on how many cats and dogs you have to feed..That case of food won't even get you through the month! Argh! We try to use decent kibble and buy a minimum amount of canned but try to entice them with bits of cooked chicken and Salmon heads n' tails we get from neighboring fishermen. It's tough just to keep everyone fed these days. :(

I've been noticing the same thing...we have just 3 cats, but the price of food, litter, treats, etc has just seemed to explode! Not to mention the vet bills!!! It really makes me concerned for the animals awaiting adoption..I've noticed a big slacking off in the number of adoptions at the shelter I volunteer at, and I'm kind of guessing it's a matter of economics at this point..so sad!
Maybe if the IRS would let us count them as dependents on our tax returns?!!..:)

I do agree that the cost of providing for our fur babies have risen enormously. I am able to afford premium brands at prices that break the bank only because I only have my Lucy Belle. So, I do understand that it is very difficult to buy premium or better quality food when you are a multi cat household. Since I brought Lucy Belle home, I have a special fund set up for her, so that I can provide for her and allow her to live the way she does, even at times of adversity. Maybe it's not the right place to sort of preach, but the quality of food does reflect on the quality of life. Although premium brands tend to be very expensive, but in the long run, it really does cut out expensive vet bills. I am a huge proponent of quality feline nutrition and because of this, I have to really skimp on buying my favorite cup of frap at Starbucks or going out to fancy restaurants. It's all about budgeting, and plenty of give and take.

Hi All,

I'm late for getting ready for work but I just have to vent. Yesterday I went food shopping at Sam's Club. The cashier rang the case of cat food, case of dog food, jug of litter and box of birdseed (for outdoor birds) first before the human food, and the total came to $61.50! Just for that! Food for animals has gone up in price enormously. I have to wonder how people are able to take care of their pets when gas prices are astronomical and food prices for themselves has gone up, and then this.

Sorry about the bad new from the State of Texas. When one needs help, they seem to take their time on notifying you if you qualify and then by the time they notify you that you do not qualify, you are basically screwed. It is the same in Calf with unemployment benefits. Takes them 2-3 weeks to determine if you are eligible and then it takes them another two weeks to send out the check. So you are waiting at least 4-6 weeks before you get the first check and by then when you do get it, it is so low of amount that you are behind on rent, bills, and no money left for food. They say we must have at least six months of savings in the bank for unemployment but I have heard of people being out of work for a year! Our systems need to be revamped.

I understand in Europe that even though their taxes are high, they at least get good value for them. I was once told that if you are unemployed in Sweden, that the benefits are so good, there is no need to worry about finding a new job. I wonder if that is still true.

Thinking positive that something good turns up for you Gatakitty! Sending prayers too.

On top of that, the State of Texas in its infinite wisdom (NOT!), decreed that I could go without getting paid for an entire month, then let me know about it 4 days after I was supposed to get the first benefits check. We're already out of money, and there are 3 more weeks until Hubby gets paid again. Of course I appealed, but by the time that process gets worked out, the month will have passed. The neighborhood is downright scary and pay is less than I made in the hinterlands, but it's only a temporary job until the end of the semester in Dec. I might take it just to get some income until Homeland Security clears me. I've got until Fri. to decide what to do--that is, if they offer me the job in the first place.

Meanwhile, I batten down the hatches and wait out Ike. Buzzard luck--cain't kill nothin', cain't find nothin' dead.

Well, he IS a handsome little lad -- I'll tell Ruggles about Willow when I get home tonight!

And Rotley stared at Windi's picture last evening, sighing copiously.

Thanks, honey. That's dear little Ruggles and his favorite (and very grubby) yellow mousie.
