And here is the next story from our home.

Introducing...
...Leela! She's the new baby here. All black, medium fur, tufts of fur at the tips of her ears and she has giant paws! Found in the rain at about 5 weeks, she went to the shelter and my sister fostered her. She's about 12 weeks now.
It's been a long time since there's been a kitten in the house, so I shopped for food and a couple of toys (geez, in my day, a piece of string tied to a piece of paper was a toy and a 2X4 with carpet stapled to it was a scratching post - now they want good money for these things!). Bought a couple of interactive toys and went through Shaddo and Jiggs' basket of toys for Leela to discover.
Brought the food and toys home, got the mail and there it was - "the card" from the hospital. (I nervously await the arrival of his ashes and pawprint.) Not only did everyone sign it, many wrote personalized notes as they knew Shaddo well and also knew he survived his brother Jiggs by only 5 months. Had the much needed meltdown, then opened and assembled the toys - sort of a kitten shower! I adopted Leela (aka, The Kitten Formerly Known as Lacy) the next day.
It's hard to let go of a 17 year chapter of my life, full of ups and downs, spanning most of the 90's and much of the 00's. I miss my boys terribly. Leela is trying to help to heal my wounded heart. It's exhausting being sad and happy at the same time.

This is my introduction of my cats from when this forum was new and we all were getting to know each other.

SHADDO AND JIGGS

Allow me to formally introduce our cat Shaddo, and our other cat, Shaddo's Brother. Ok, his name is Jiggs. It's the younger brother syndrome. We refer to them as "the boys". Shaddo came into our lives soon after we lost our beautiful long hair black beauty Smokie in 1991. She was only 1 1/2 years old when she got into something toxic. Then hubby's Dad died suddenly. In the middle of this, my niece mentioned kittens she knew of. Shaddo made it clear that he wanted to adopt us. He's part Siamese, and has the markings of a domestic short hair. We believe he inherited 8 of Smokie's lives (think he's used about 25 by now). A year later, an ad was in the paper for Maine Coon kittens, no papers. We rescued Jiggs from a tatoo place full of kittens. Jiggs has classic brown tabby Maine Coon markings.
Shaddo didn't approve of this little brown fluff-ball. Eventually, he figured this thing would be around, so he put up with him, but made sure the brown thing knew who was there first. In their younger days, they would sleep together; now they have their own places. The only time they're close together is at feeding time. I place their plates as close together as possible - just because!
Shaddo is hyperthyroid, and gets transdermal methamazole twice a day and both boys get vitamins twice a day. Jiggs gets 1/2 Pepcid AC for a suspected ulcer. Jiggs always lets me know when it's time to eat.
Anyone who remembers classic Buggs Bunny cartoons may know of the one where Buggs takes on a wrestler. This brings me to "round 73". We substitute Buggs and the wrestler with Shaddo and Jiggs. Shaddo is at one end of the yard aiming himself at Jiggs as the arrow in a bow. Jiggs is at the other end of the yard getting ready to shoot himself out of a cannon. That's the visual. They would run at each other at top speed and clash in the middle of the back yard. The boys were trained at an early age to stay close when they go out. They also must check in when mamma calls. They don't go out quite as often these days, except when it's nice out. No more going out at 4am, in the rain or snow.
The boys don't play anymore. They sleep, eat, look out the window, get under my feet, and mooch for whatever we're eating. Shaddo tends to run around a lot after meals. We have "steps" for them to get to where they want to go. From the floor to the chair to the ledge to the counter where there's a water bowl by the kitchen sink. Never mind that there's one by the food. Then back down. The cycle repeats over and over. Probably explains the occasional upchucking.
At 15 and 16 years old, there are so many stories that I could share, ranging from Shaddo nipping at Mom's ankle, to Shaddo getting trapped in my truck, to Shaddo stealing a hamburger, to Shaddo on the roof, to Shaddo trapping a chipmunk in the house for me, to the tag-team effort of getting a mouse out of the attic. It's usually all about Shaddo!
As for Jiggs, he's my lovebug. Sleeps at my feet and stays with me when I'm sick. He's lost weight and his fur isn't as wooly-bully as it used to be, but he's still a beautiful cat.
So that's that. Shaddo: Shaddoobie, The Shaddomeister, Shaddorama, Schnobben, Sluggo, Hey Grey Cat. Jiggs: Jiggzie, The Wookie, The Brown Cat, Mr. Mooch, Messy Marvin, The Big Brown Fuzzy Thing. Love them both sooooo much!
.....
Jiggs died on January 3, 2008 at 16 years, and Shaddo followed on June 9th at 17 years.

Catkin's story

My earliest memories are of snuggling with my brothers and sisters against my mama's warm furry flank. There were humans in this place, too; they provided food and playtime and other good things. Mama had had a home once, before she was turned out to wander the streets pregnant and hungry, and she taught us to trust humans. She also taught us how to eat grown-up food, how to use the litter tray, and all those important things house cats need to know.

One day, Mama and my siblings and I were sent to another place; seems that we were in a "foster home" and now that we were a couple months old it was time for us to find our own homes. My siblings and I were put in a big cage and people would come in and play with us. When the clinic closed, they let us out to play with the resident cats and some of the other cats waiting to be adopted. One by one, my brothers and sisters went away with their new humans, and I was left behind. Maybe because I have black fur? I had two other kittens to play with, but they were born "feral" and didn't like humans too as much.

One day a pair of humans came in, saying that they wanted to adopt an adult cat. Actually, I had seen them a couple weeks before, when they had brought in their cat to be boarded, but at that time I was too busy and I just ignored them. The molly-human went off to look at the adult cats in their cages, but the tom-human stayed by the kitten pen and I stared back at him with my big round eyes "You want to choose ME". He picked me up and I relaxed in his arms, purring, and let him hold me on my back. Then the molly-human came over to play with and pet me. They went away again, like everyone else, but a few days later they came back for me!

cat story

Runty, Pretty Boy, Loki and Snowey came to my husband and I in a cardboard box on our door step. Literally. A feral mama gave birth on our poarch, and we didn't have the heart to turn them away. We got mama fixed, adopted the litter which my current cat (the matriarch) eventually accepted. The kittens are also all fixed. I never intended to have kittens, but they are such joy to our lives now. Mama is also now adopted.

Rose -
I grew up in Georgia. My sis and I were dumped in a backyard where there was a feral colony being fed by the homeowners. There were ten of us there. Everything was fine for a couple of years, food everyday and woods for shelter. The people caught each of us and got us "fixed" so we didn't have kittens. Then one day they caught us all again. I overheard the lady say they had to get rid of us or Animal Control would. That didn't sound good. People came in a big van and loaded all of us in our carriers into the van. We drove for days it seemed like. Finally we got to Maryland and more people poked and prodded us and "evaluated" us! I didn't know what all was going on, I'd never been handled by people or inside of a house before! They kept saying I was a pretty meezer and shouldn't live in a woods, but that was all I'd ever known. Most of my friends were sent to a place called "Good Shepard Sanctuary" where kitties that are wild can live forever. They thought I was too special to go there! A lady they called Vencka said she had a special place for me! She brought me to Dancing Cat Hill.

For the first six weeks I lived in a big cage inside the front door of this big house. There were ten other cats living there so it seemed kind of ok, but I never saw the inside of a house before. The people there would feed me and try to pet me, I didn't like that part so much. They said I was real pretty, course I already knew that! Finally one day they asked me if I'd like to come out of that cage and explore the whole house! It was kinda scary doing that but I decided I liked it. Besides there is the handsomest guy cat, Schatzi, that really likes me too! He's my boyfriend now and we curl up together. He keeps telling me the people are ok, he lets them pet him and even pick him up and stuff. I still don't know about that but I like hanging around with everyone. They don't let me go outside. They say if I'll just sit on their laps that one day I can go out. Personally I think outside is overrated. It's really nice being inside and warm or cool and having food always available. I've been here a year now and I think I'll stay!

Magoo:

Came as a foster with his sister at about 5 months old- he had been rescued after his mom was hit by a car. His two other sibs died, and Magoo and Maggie were so sick they almost died. Magoo's eyes were bleeding and he was blind. Before he came to me Magoo and his sister lived at a vets office for months where they were nursed back to health. Upon entering my home, Magoo hid behind the fridge and stove for at least a week. He slowly got comfortable. He followed his sister everywhere, she was his seeing eye cat. When she got adopted, Goo cried and cried, blindly searching for her. It was heartbreaking! But he adjusted, and his personality began to shine. He became more independent. He wormed his way into his foster mommy's heart and...adoption!

Amos:

He and his brother were fosters- at 8 weeks old, they were very shy, their nickname was "The Standoffish Brothers." Their first adoption fell through so they had to go to the pet store adoption center. I cried and cried. Brother Boris was adopted within a few weeks and Amos became despondent with grief. He would not eat and got very, very, sick. He was brought to a foster home for intensive feeding rehab, and as soon as he was well enough, I adopted him. He was never meant to leave me!

Mercedes -
I heard thru the kitty grapevine that Dancing Cat Hill was a great place for a kitty to live, I sure had to work hard to get there though! I was just a tiny girl, maybe 3 weeks old, and it was a cold February day. My mama was looking for someplace to keep me warm. There was this big monster thing that had just been parked near by and mama carried me up into its heart where it was real warm. She told me to be good and wait for her to bring my brothers and sisters. While she was gone though the monster woke up! It was roaring and growling and I growled right back and put my fur up and hunkered down just as small as I could. Suddenly the monster was running really fast over the streets, it ran and ran. It would get tired and stop and rest. I would scream then for my mama really loud but I guess she couldn't hear me. Then the monster would start roaring and would start running again, roaring and growling the whole time. It did that all day and at least I was warm but my momma never came back. Finally the monster ran for a really long time, it felt like hours, and I could see the road flying by underneath us. I was really scared and shouted the whole time, I was almost hoarse from all my screaming. It was dark when the monster stopped. Suddenly it's head was torn open and there were two people looking at me! They seemed surprised to see me even though I'd been trying to tell them I was right there all day long! A big hand reached in and pulled me out of the monsters heart. They poked me all over to see if I was ok and I was but I was hungry and needed my mama. They got me some goat milk and warmed it up for me. I told them I wanted to go to Dancing Cat Hill but they hadn't heard of it, instead they took me to Vencka, the kitten whisperer. I stayed with Vencka for a long time until I was big enough to go to adoption fairs. I asked her could I please go to Dancing Cat Hill instead? She told me I would find my furr-ever home at the fair.

Vencka was surprised to see the couple from Dancing Cat Hill at her fair, she introduced us - apparently they had already heard about me and my wild ride in the monsters heart and wanted to meet ME! They said I had to come live with them! Vencka took me over the next day and it's a wonderful place. They told me my name would be Mercedes in honor of surviving a day in the heart of the beast by the same name, they call me Cede (say-dee) for short though.

Baby Sawyer----
Mommy had my older sister, Roxy, for a year now and was tossing around the idea of having a second fur child. She had been looking on Petfinder.com and area rescue agencies for a couple of weeks now and was uncertain how Roxy would take to being a big sister. She kept talking about adding a second child to her brood at work and as luck would have it, a manager came into the lunch room one day and said, "Who wants kittens???" Every said, "Necole does!". My manager explained to me that his wife had adopted a stray on their property, convinced him to keep her (Sassy) and when they took her to the v-e-t to be spayed, the nice vet felt Sassy's tummy and said, "Bring her back in a few weeks after she's had her babies." This was news to Sassy's mom and dad! In the middle of April, me and my three brothers were born. Sassy's dad wanted to give me and my brothers away at 4 weeks old but my soon-to-be-new-Mommy said, "No! Let the babies stay with their momma for a few more weeks!" Sassy's dad isn't too versed in kitten care LOL
Sassy's Mommy brought me and my brothers to my new Mommy's work one day and let us play in the showroom so my new Mommy could see us. Mommy called another lady who works with her and said, "Get down here quick! We've got kittens in the house!" The other nice lady had just sent one of her kits to the Rainbow Bridge and Mommy thought the kittens would cheer her up. Mommy and the nice lady sat down and let me and my brothers play around them, trying to chose who would go home with who. After we played for a long time (good thing Mommy wasn't busy at work that day!), I climbed up Mommy's leg and into her cardigan sweater. I plopped down on Mommy's elbow, snuggled inside the sweater and fell asleep for a long time. Mom look surprised and said, "Well, I guess I was chosen!"
The other nice lady ended up taking my brother home and his name is now Toby. I hear he gets along better with his goggie-brother instead of his cat-sister but all-in-all, he has a wonderful furever home now. My other two brothers were adopted by customers of the dealership so I hope they are doing OK.
A couple of weeks after Mommy picked me out, Sassy's Mommy brought me back to the dealership to go home with Mommy, since I was now 6 weeks old. I hung out with Mommy at work for a couple of hours and then I went home with her to meet my new sister. Sister wasn't thrilled with me at first but now she treats me like I'm her kitten :) I'm really good at wiggling into hearts!
P.S. Sassy's Mommy says I look JUST LIKE Sassy :)
P.P.S. My mommy says she likes reading all of these stories :)

I love this thread and reading everyone's stories; but I have so many cats and they ALL have a story (my favorite breed is rescue!), and I'm only telling about the current group! I don't want to take up too much space here! lol

Maybe one more story tonight, the next three came together although they are not related - Kelly, Emmett and Jake.

Kelly - Me and my brother were found wandering around a field in Glen Burnie when we were about four weeks old, without our mama. We were taken by Animal Control and given to Vencka, a sweet lady that cares for motherless kittens. She had a lot of kittens like us that she was bottle feeding and raising until we were big enough to go to adoption fairs at Pet Smart to find our furr-ever homes.

Jake - They found me on the streets of Baltimore with my two brothers. At first I was called Whisper because I'm the strong silent type, and my brothers were Armani and Giovanni because they were so beautiful (they always called me Runt!) But had lost our mama and we were so little that we needed to be fed with a bottle so we were given to Vencka to be taken care of.

Emmett - My mama brought me and my sister to a doorstep in Laurel when we were still very little and left us there. I don't remember much about that cause I was real sick, my eyes hurt, I couldn't see too well thru the gunk in them, and I was soooo hungry. I was much smaller than Sis, about half size. We were brought to Vencka who's a kitten whisperer! She took really good care of me but I was very sick and not growing.

Kelly - One day when I was about 7 weeks old this woman and man came to visit Vencka and to see me! The woman said I was just exactly the little red kitty she had been looking for (of course I knew that already!) She hugged me and cuddled me a lot. While she was loving me Vencka put Emmett in the man's hands and Emmett did his very best to purr and cuddle too. All the while my good friend Whisper was there hanging around but the people weren't paying any attention to him. The couple said they'd like to take me and Emmett home but Vencka said I was too young and Emmett was too sick to take that day, besides she had to make sure they were good people that would take care of us. A week later the couple came back to get me but Emmett was too sick to leave Vencka. Whisper made eyes at them but they still didn't notice him, I guess they were blinded by my handsomeness and Emmett's cuteness.

Emmett - a week after Kelly went with the couple I was finally feeling enough better that Vencka decided I could go with them too, and guess what - they decided they wanted to give Whisper a home too since he was missing Kelly so much, but only if we'd all call him Jake.

Jake - I didn't mind the name change, it was better than Runt or Whisper anyway! I was so happy they wanted me too cause I really missed Kelly. I purred my quiet little purr and gave them silent meows to let them know.

Emmett - I am the same age as Kelly and Jake but when I first came to Dancing Cat Hill I was only about half as big as them. I ate and ate and ate but just couldn't seem to grow much. They fed me really good food but I couldn't digest it very well. But the couple kept trying new foods until they finally found ones I could manage. I finally started to grow and now I'm still smaller but at least I'm normal size, I still feel like I have to eat all the time though.

Kelly - we're all very happy here together, we love our big brothers Yogi and Schatzi. There's a lot of girls here too and we just ignore them. I love hunting mice and moles out in the field. Jake, Emmett and me are fearless out in the hedgerow!

Roxy Anne------
Mommy has just moved to our first apartment by herself to help bridge the distance gap between her and her new boyfriend (Ex-Mr. RM) She was in a bigger city, had just called off her wedding and didn't have many friends here yet. After a few months of living alone she suddenly had a thought, "Why don't I have a pet? A nice kitty to keep me company." So she started looking through the Craigslist ads to see if any nice kitties needed homes. Mommy stumbled across an ad with a picture of three kittens being held up. In the picture, I was the middle kitten, my brother was a tuxi and my other brother was a tiger with white eye liner and the ad said we were 6 weeks old. Mommy emailed the picture to Ex-Mr. RM and said, "I want the tiger kitten!" Ex-Mr. RM said, "I like the girl in the middle!" Mommy didn't want me (at first)!
Mommy got off work early the next day and went to the store and bought toys, food, dishes, cat bed, etc. Then she drove to the house where I was and the house was dumpy :( She was worried us kittens wouldn't be in good shape and when Mommy knocked on the door, a lady answered who had two kittens in her arms...me and my tuxi brother. She said my tiger brother was adopted earlier today. Mommy heard a male voice in the back of the house ask if someone was here for the kittens and the lady said yes and the man said "good because I don't want to have to use them as snake bait." Mommy was horrified! So Mommy sat on the floor and waited to see who would come to her first. My tuxi brother was nervous so he stayed by the lady who answered the door and I went up to Mommy and climbed up her legs to her shoulders and sat there like a parrot. Mommy laughed and made the remark that her boyfriend would be happy tonight when he came home and saw who was now living with her. Mommy was worried about my tuxi brother but the nice lady said someone had already called about him and would be there later on tonight or tomorrow to pick him up.
Ex-Mr. RM kept texting Mommy and asking which kitten she brought home and Mommy kept telling him, "You'll see when you get here tonight." When he walked through the door and saw me Mommy and me playing in the middle of the living room floor...he smiled and was so happy Mommy chose me! Mommy said, "her name is Roxy Anne and she needs a bath because she has fleas." Mommy had always known that her "first born" was going to be named Roxy Anne since she liked that name so much. Good thing I fit the bill...sassy and cute as a button! Even though Mommy had to break up with Ex-Mr. RM, she's glad he was there to help raise me and I'm glad that I have my Mommy :)

Schatzi -
I'm Mali's nephew. My mom was too smart to get caught in the lady's traps and she lived out in the woods for almost a year while the lady kept coming trying to gather up all of the kitties that lived there. Unfortunately mom got pregnant twice during that time and I was born in her second litter of six. Mom was really tired and weak when she was pregnant with us, she got sick and finally let the lady catch her. The lady took her to live in a barn! This nice lady and man came to visit us all the day I was born. The lady said I looked just like my cousin Yogi and that I should come home with her but the man said no, they had enough cats already!

I really liked it in the barn but mom had a hard time, she was really sick and trying to nurse us too, she almost didn't survive. I loved the horses and would play around their feet. My brothers and sisters were wild, but I loved to cuddle. The lady and man came to visit us several times (she didn't know it but I was weaving a spell on her) and the barn lady called me a "love-bug." One day the lady and man said ok, I did have to go home with them! Imagine my surprise to find my Aunt Mali and my cousins already living at Dancing Cat Hill! I've been here almost four years and it's a wonderful place with lot's of woods and fields and hedgerows for wandering.

Mali -
I was born in a house in the woods and lived with a lady and a bunch of other cats. She was sometimes a nice lady who put out food for us, and sometimes she wasn't so nice and would forget about us so we didn't eat for days. I was always hungry! She was lost in a fog of stinky drugs, and had strange other people come around too, some of them used to kick at me when I went outside or came inside. One of the big boy cats (he might have been my daddy, I don't know) liked the girl cats and as soon as I came into my first heat he got me pregnant, along with three of my siblings!

The lady got sicker and sicker and then one day she died! We were hungry for a lot of days, but then this nice lady started coming around trying to catch us. She brought food! We hid for a long time but we were really hungry and most of us got caught in the nice lady's traps (I heard that eventually we all did, but it took two years, there were 14 of us!) Anyway, by the time I got caught I was almost ready to have my babies. Some of my friends went to a shelter. The nice lady had taken me to a barn along with three of my pregnant friends. I was there for a week, and except for the noisy horses I thought it would be a pretty good place to have my babies. I didn't even dream of a home, but one day this man and woman came to the barn and said they wanted to take me home even though I was going to have babies! They said they loved my pretty tuxedo coat!

I wasn't sure I was safe, people hadn't been very nice to me up until then. But the man and woman gave me lot's to eat and a room of my own, and a big cozy box that was perfect for having my babies in. They did have one other cat who said she didn't like me but I just paid no attention to her, I already handled tougher cats than her! I waited for a whole other week to be sure my babies would be safe and finally it seemed ok to me, so I used the nice box they had provided and gave birth to six little ones. The woman found me just after I had the last one. She said they were so beautiful and she called the man to come and see too. They looked so happy!

They kept us all in the library room, and would visit with us in the morning and come and sit with us at night and fed us well, as much as I wanted to eat, the bowl was always full! I was so happy! My little ones grew big and even though the woman and man wanted to keep all of us they said they had friends that really wanted to give two of my babies their own homes so one day two ladies came and took Maahes and Maggie away. But Yogi, Annie, Trixi and Colebee still live with us. I've been here almost five years now and Dancing Cat Hill is a pretty nice place to live for a cat!

Wheaten -

I was born into a house that had lots of kitties and puppies. There were too many of us so we got taken away and taken to the shelter.
I had 5 brothers, 4 who looked like me, and one who was all black named Satchmo. All my brothers were taken away to their homes except for Satchmo. I was so little, I don’t’ think anybody wanted me because I was the runt.
One day the shelter lady picked me up and took me to a room where another lady was. The lady picked me up and put me on her shoulder. It felt so good I just purred myself to sleep.
I don’t remember much after that until I was riding in a big box. I was in a room all by myself and I didn’t like that at all. I was used to being around other kitties so I hollered so loud the lady came in, wrapped me up in a blanket, crawled into the tub and put me on her chest so I could go to sleep. And sleep I did.
The first few weeks were hard because I couldn’t’ come out of the room by myself and I had a really bad cold. But the lady – who I call Mama- took me to the doctor and he gave me a shot and some medicine and I have been ok every since.
I have 2 brothers who I love very much. I love to sleep with them and make them chase me. I still talk a lot and I love to be up higher than everyone else. There isn’t a cabinet or windowsill that’s safe from me. I’m almost 2 years old now and I’m still a little guy. I’ll never be very big, but I make up for it in personality!!!

Rocky

I used to live with some people, but they threw me away. I was outside before I knew it and among other cats. They didn’t like me at all and never let me get near the food. They picked on me because they knew I wouldn’t fight back. Life was very hard. Sometimes I would sneak food when they weren’t looking, willing to get beaten up because I was so very hungry. None of the other cats was ever friendly to me. I lost a lot of weight and got depressed. I was a good kitty, why would somebody just throw me away and not love me anymore?
Then one day I wandered on to a porch and two ladies stared at me from inside. I could see they had other cats too. The other cats probably told them not to be nice to me, but they were. They would feed me and pet me and sometimes when it was cold they would let me come inside during the night time because they didn’t want me to be cold. I would look at them when I was outside, longing to be a part of a family again where I could be loved and hugged and told what a sweet, pretty boy I was. I wanted them to take me in because I knew they were really nice people.
One day one of the ladies scooped me up and took me to a vet. I didn’t want to go, but the vet said I was lucky because I had an upper respiratory infection so I had to take medicine and get better. Once I felt better I could actually smell food and I started eating and getting bigger.
Not too long after that, another lady came to see the two ladies and she put me in a cage and took me away. YAY!! I was finally going to get a home – or so Ithought. The lady put me in a room with some other kitties who didn’t like me. I was safe in my cage, but I was sad. Why didn’t other cats like me? I’m not a mean kitty, and I’m always on my best behavior. I’ve never even shredded so much as a roll of toilet tissue.
The next day the other lady put me in a car and we went for a long drive. I cried a bit because I was confused and frightened. Where was I going and why did the other two really nice ladies want me to go away? They were always so nice to me – why didn’t anyone ever want me?
The car stopped and the lady pulled my cage out and yet another lady came along and took the cage and we went down the street. She took me into a building with lots of people in it and they all came over to my cage to peer at me. I talked a bit, but I was still sad and very afraid. Would I ever get another home to live in?
Suddenly I was in another car. I was quiet now, resigned to the fact that I wasn’t going home. I didn’t know where I was going. I sat there and slept.
Before I knew it I was in a house!! Inside and free!! The last lady who took me picked me up and rocked me back and forth and said nice things to me. I just stared at her. I hoped it wasn’t a mean trick because this house seemed sort of nice. I could smell some cat food.
She put me down and some other cats came over to see me. Oh no, not again. But a small striped cat sniffed me and sat down next to me. A great big striped cat with no tail came over to me to, but he hissed at me and tried to swat my tail. I ran away and hid under a bed for 2 days. The lady kept trying to coax me out but I wasn’t going for that. Finally I got so hungry I had to go out and eat. The other cats weren’t mad at me anymore, so I got some dinner and went back under the bed. That night the lady was laying in the bed with the other cats so I jumped up on the bed too, but I stayed down by her feet and slept. I had such a good night’s sleep that night. Eventually, I made my way up and slept with the lady and the other cats. She told me her name was Mama and that the two other ladies loved me so much they wanted me to have a good home with lots of love.
My mama loves me so much and always tells me so. She calls me The Owl because my eyes are big and round. I love her and my brothers. Unfortunately my brother Maverick went to the bridge a couple of years ago. But I still have my big brother Huddy and now I have a new little brother named Rafferty. I’m such a lucky kitty.

Ruggles

The large young cat was black and round faced, part Maine coon and part Manx, and he stirred in his sleep. Dreaming, his tufted paws twitched and his breath came fast in harsh little gasps and he whimpered.

****
It was cold. The smell of cigarettes had filled the old car, and when the window was rolled down he sniffed the sweet air, smelling so fresh, blowingthrough the moving car.

Then he heard his mother crying, and the other kittens were scooped up from the box and flung after her through the open window into the field.

"And you go too!" the man laughed. He was flying through the air, claws extended, holding on to nothing and screaming in fear. The car roared down the road, tires kicking back gravel and cold wetness.

It was terrible, that cold April field.

They were all hungry, and his belly hurt all the time. There was so little they could find to eat there. He chewed leaves, grass, bugs — nasty — and his brother and his sister kept getting thinner. They drank from dirty puddles of melting snow. His mother kept them warm, but they were all slowly starving.

A jogger saw them one morning in May running past the field, seeing black spots against patches of spring grass, and she called the shelter. Two men came out there, but they ran from the scent of man. They knew something was coming to hurt them again.

The men set a large crate out in the middle of the field by a tree, and one of them threw handfuls of cat chow into the carrier. The cats were terrified of the men and their smell, but they were hungry.

They crept through the grass with pounding hearts, inching around the puddles of water toward the crate. Suddenly all four bolted into the crate toward the food. The door clicked behind them. The young cat turned, mewing, clawing frantically at the wire door.

Then he heard a crunching. His mother and the two kittens huddled together, their faces buried in the large pile of dry cat food. The crate did not exist for them. He yowled to get out, tearing at the wire bars. He knew that very soon a window would move down and hands would hurl him out into the cold field again.

"Pick up that end, and keep it level," a voice said, and the crate moved up and into the back of the truck. The smell of man was thick in the air.

Shaking, he turned to his mother. She had finished eating and was washing his sister. He moved toward the food. He bit into the cat chow and turned his head, dropping a few crumbs.

A big, friendly face appeared outside the crate.

"Eat up, little guy. You're okay."
****

He shook himself awake, his amber eyes wide, and he looked for his mother, his brother and his sister. They were all curled up together in one large cage, and it was quiet and very late. Darkness had settled over everything, and a night light cast a soft, bright pool of gold on the floor. The shelter was closed for the night and the food and water were fresh in the big clean bowls.

It was not like the field. There it was cold, wet. The raw winds and the late snow made their paws burn, and the rains had drenched them to the bone. During the storms they crouched together under some bushes near a tree, wide-eyed and terrified.

In the shelter, it was warm. A fleecy green blanket surrounded them in the cage.

His mother started washing his large soft ears, and he curled against her listening to the rumble of her purr. They were safe for now, but the smell of humans still scared him. It would be a long time before the bad dream stopped.

The next day his mother and brother and sister were taken to the PetFair, and he shook with terror as one of the workers took him out of his carrier.

"That's my cat," said the small lady, observing the large frightened kitten.

"You lost him?" said the worker.

"No," she smiled. "I just found him." She looked at him again, and their eyes locked. "He is mine."

Ruggles was coming home.

It would take a period of adjustment with big, sweet-natured Ruggles and the very spoiled Rotley, but they both got used to each other and became friends.

Then they were brothers. He slept in bed with the small lady, curled against her knees and Rotley snored on her other side all through the quiet nights. He had his own food bowl and water bowl, his toys, his beds, his mama, his brother, and his home.

It took a long time, but bad dreams were over for good.

I don't remember how we got there, but my two sisters and I ended up at the Humane Society Shelter when we were just kittens......... my sisters were very outgoing and playful, but I always thought how silly they were, and I wouldn't act so foolish, so I usually ignored them. One day, a Mom and two kids came to the shelter............ the little girl had long blonde hair down to her waist, and big blue eyes............ for a little girl, she was very calm, and looked at my sisters and me for a long time - watching.......... of course, my idiot sisters were screaming and jumping around in the cage, trying to poke their little paws through the front to reach out to the little girl.......... I heard the Mom say to the little girl "how pretty, all white kittens", would you like one of those? They look so friendly........... the little girl was still quietly studying us............. I glared at her, gave a small hiss and turned my head (my sisters were going crazy)........... finally, the little girl said, "Mommy, can I hold one?"........... sure said the Mom, so a hand reached in to get one of my sisters......... "no!" said the little girl, "I want that one in the back"............ "but she doesn't seem very friendly" said the Mom...... "I don't care, I want HER" said the little girl, and I was scooped up and placed in her arms............... and so I came to live with this little girl and her family, the girl was in kindergarten at the time.............. I really grew to love the little girl, and came to 'tolerate' the other hoomans, as long as they did my bidding....... when I was about 9 years old, the family got this anoying new kitten - a Siamese (oh joy, another yapper). They tried to force us to like each other, but seriously?? me???? be nice????... recall, I couldn't stand my own sisters!......... finally eveyone realized that it's better for everyone if I have my own space. When the 'little girl' grew up and went off to college, we moved to a nice house with a separate apartment. I have my own room there, and when I want to interact, I come downstairs and let the man pet me because he works there............. the Mom checks on me during the day, and brings me out on the porch for some nice sunshine and fresh air............. I'm a happy girl as long as I don't have to be with/near any other animals........... after all, I am the 'Queen'..........

Abby's story:

........... one of my earliest memories was purring with my Meowmy and siblings as we nursed on her................ it was so funny, cause we all looked the same - 'OctaMom' had nothing on my Meowmy!........ she had 8 identical twins!!!!...........

.... anyway, one night, it was raining really hard, and thunder was crashing everywhere........... we were very scared............ the other 'families' of cats that lived in the place where we did were all crying too, noone knew what was happening!......... suddenly - CRASH!...... the wind ripped the roof right off the building, and our crates were tossed everywhere!......... kinda like Dorthoy's house in the wizzard of OZ............. our crate was thrown around and smashed against a big tree, and we all fell out........... we were crying and screaming for Meowmy, my brothers and sisters and I were all running around, and the wind and rain and lightening was HORRIBLE!!!........ I saw some kitties running for a hole in one of the big tree stumps, so I ran for shelter and huddled with everyone............... finally after a long time, the rain stopped and we peaked out - everything was a MESS!.......... trees were broken everywhere, the buildings were smashed apart, fences were ripped up, and there were big scary cats that I didn't know running everywhere!......... I cried and cried for Meowmy, but I couldn't find her!...... I had to hide for 6 days in this scary place, with no one I knew......... I tried to find food, but most times, the other bigger cats would push me aside and take if from me............ I was cold and hungry and I wanted my Mama!!!!............... then one day, a bunch of hoomans drove up in a big truck and I saw they were putting all the cats and kittens that they could find in cages............. I ran and hid of course, but someone found me and I was put in a cage............. I was terrified, I didn't know what would happen to me...........a nice lady finally came to my cage and when she saw me, she said "here's a little Meezer, I'll take her, I have others in my foster home"............ so I came to live in her house, but there were so many other kitties there, I felt small and insignificant - I was sad...........then one day, the lady came and got me and put me in a carrier and off we went in her car........... I didn't know where we were going, but she was talking to me in the car ride..........." I met a family today, that really wants a Siamese kitten " I told them about you, that you are about 10 weeks old, but that you have ring worm from being out in the hurricane Charley that smashed your breeder's house. They have offered to take you, so I'm bringing you to our local Pet Smart adoption fair to meet them"............. when we got to the Pet Smart, I met this wonderful family, and the Mom and I looked into each other eyes and knew we had met out 'furrever soul mate'........ she held me almost the entire first month I lived with them, cause the girl's old white cat didn't like me, and would scare me....... she also treated my ring worm and patiently gave me my meds until I was well and strong............... it took me a couple of years, but I finally got brave enough to curl up in her lap, and now that's where I want to be all the time. I love her totally and completely, and she's all I need. I don't ever want to be separated from her! She is my Meowmy now, for ever and ever!

The first family I was adopted by was not a success. I would just settle down to have a much needed nap (as all us growing kittens do) when a mini human would try and grab me and pull my tail!! I would run and hide so that he could not get to me. After a while the mini humans mum decided it wasn't a good idea to keep me any more and asked her friend to find me a new home. The friend knew a work-mate who was desperate for a cat so she took a photo of me looking my cutest and showed it to her, the friend wanted me straight away but had to convince the man human she lived with. One day when I was hiding as usual, a big human got me and put me in my pink carrier and gathered up all my pink accessories (My first human wanted a girl cat really) and put me in a noisy thing called a car...I miaowed a lot at first but then settled down...at least I could have a good sleep in here. I then got to see some new humans, a crazy lady put her face right up against my cage and said "oh you are sooo gorgeous" well of course I am I thought, then we went in another noisy thing and finally stopped. By this time I was desperate to use the loo, and as soon as I saw them setting it up I started miaowing so that they would let me get out and use it. The lady said "hold on sweetie, we are nearly there" and then I was out!!! What a relief!!! I started running around the flat like mad while the lady and man said "oh no, he's a nutter" I wasn't a nutter at all, I was just glad to be out of that pink carrier!! Any how it is nearly a year and a half since I moved in and I think you can safely say I have my new humans very well trained and completely wrapped around my little white paws!!!
