oh, Joan, what a sad, lovely story!
It does get very very sad and frustrating at times...I'm so over the people looking for a specific breed..I mean, I can understand looking for a particular type of cat if you've recently experienced a loss, but all too often I find that people want a "breed" of dog or cat, without even meeting whatever we have on hand to meet their specifications!!! So they want a purebred at shelter prices..and it breaks my heart....If I'm ever asked, I "neglect" to mention if the animal is purebred or not, just to see the response I get! I don't want to be responsible for an animal getting adopted for the wrong reason!

I've really enjoyed reading your stories, everyone. Sullis, I'm in total agreement. I posted a thread about an update on Prince Chunk, and I'm outraged because that shelter should be empty. I'm sure many applicants just wanted their 15 minutes of fame. And thank you for being a shelter volunteer. My sister volunteers at a local shelter and although it can be frustrating and sad, it often brings her happiness and satisfaction. She is how I met Leela, the kitten formerly known as Lacy. She was found in the rain and my sister fostered her and I met her on Memorial Day. Our old friend Shaddo was fading from hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, and at 17, his old body was just giving out. We had just lost our pal Jiggs (16 years old) in January so our hearts were very heavy. A few weeks after Shaddo went to the Bridge, we adopted the kitten found in the rain.

Thank god my husband doesn't read this site....we started off at 1, then 2, then 1 again, then 2 (to make up for our loss) and now 3...He definitely gets upset when I broach the subject...but you know he falls in love with all of them despite himself!

oh, I know 2bp...felt the same way!
And the shelter I volunteer at placed an ad in our local paper, kind of an "adopt the kitty of the week" kind of thing, for one of our older boys, Sneaky, an 8 yr old lovely orange tabby...he was adopted within the week! Which of course I was elated about, but at the same time I thought, is it only cuz he made the paper? So maybe I can convince the same paper to do a "special needs kitty of the week"....I only hesitate because I think people will adopt for the wrong reason!!

Mr. Kitty came to use right after we moved into the house we live in now. We had only lived in it for about a month...it was spring break and pouring down rain. I kept hearing this little meowing noise..looked out behind our house and saw a drenched ball of fur. That was 10 years ago.

Goober also just showed up at our house...I think he hitched a ride on my son's truck when he came home from a friend's house. He was so small, flea ridden and could barely hear. Funny thing, Mr. Kitty never let other stray kitties stay around but for some reason it was different with Goober. So Goober became Mr. Kitty's cat....lol... and they have been together ever since.

Leggs showed up at a business we had in town one evening. Every evening she would come at the same time and I started feeding her. I always hated to leave her and was afraid she would get ran over. When I would leave she would sit at my car and watch me. I told my hubby and he said "no more cats".
Well, one evening when I left she followed me to my car and that was it. I told her if your going home with me get in. Amazingly, she jumped right in the car and rode looking out the passenger side window all the way home. My hubby didn't speak to me for a week...but it was worth it.

Shortly after Leggs moved in she gave birth to Moe and Calli. When Leggs went into labor I sit in the bathroom with her all day long. Moe was born first and then Calli...it was love at first sight. I knew I would never be able to give them up.

Hubby wasn't thrilled from going to 2 cats to 5 but he soon adjusted. He still kids me about which ones we are giving away. My reply is "Don't you know cats are like potato chips...you can't have just one."

Totally. I guess they just wanted attention or to have a "famous" cat. I'm in New Zealand and we're a bit luckier here. From my experience, people usually are willing to consider adopting another animal if the one they saw in the paper (or whatever) has gone. The thing that makes my blood boil is people who just abandon their animals -- just move away and don't take their pets with them. What the h*** is the matter with them?

(sighs) I know...just the word "unwanted" makes me dissolve into tears...

I think what really makes my blood boil is when a cat hits the news (I'm in NYC, and just joined this site, so don't know if you read about Princess/Prince Chunk?) In any event, a large (they reported 44 lbs, I think..which seems unbelieveable to me!) cat found wandering in NJ...he was brought to a shelter, and received all kinds of news coverage here; so much so that over 500 people applied to adopt him....the SAD part of it is, not ONE of the potential adoptees would consider another kitty, once they had been told he was spoken for......what exactly does that say? You'd think that people would be told he may well be diabetic at that weight (and I'm sure there were other cats like your Jasper that could have benefitted from some TLC!!) but not one, not one! potential adopter would consider another kitty? It seems surreal to me; I would have thought that someone who was ready to adopt Prince Chunk would've said, ok, who else needs a home!!!??)

Oh yes... Thoughts of a centrally heated kitty palace down the back of the garden. I might hire some more staff for them though -- I do believe that each kitty deserves its very own human lap to sit on whenever kitty desires... That might get a bit difficult if we could take home all the unwanted ones...

oh, bless little Jasper and you for loving him!
I just can't bear the "throwaways"...when you see something that gets passed over, week after week, I dunno...it just really kills me! We also had a dear, departed Siamese..had been returned to the shelter twice, because he was unmanageable...had suffered severe head trauma (stories I got was he was either hit with a baseball bat or used as pitbull bait..to be honest, no one really knew) but even though he was essentially feral, I couldn't bear it...we took him home and literally took 9 months for him to finally trust us..(we would have to throw paper balls to distract him from attacking us when we moved from room to room..he was our only cat at that point) He had epilepsy, megacolon, and ultimately, cardiomyopathy which took him from us suddenly at the age of 10...but we had 7 great years together and I know he loved us, especially my husband...he would follow him around like a dog..me, he only tolerated, but I loved him nonetheless!

I love reading these stories! We currently have 3 kitties; Shadow is a smoke longhair..at 8 months she was the only one of her littermates not to be adopted and didnt do well at adoption events; she also had gum disease and lost 12 of her teeth, which caused her tongue to often stick out..but a friend emailed me her pic and story and we picked her up at the shelter...Today she's 4 1/2; big, sassy and loving! Linus is a buff longhair; he was a 5 month old feral, found in a parking lot covered in motor oil..We saw him at our local shelter and fell in love, even though he didn't seem very thrilled to meet us! But he's now 3 1/2 and a big teddy bear of a cat, even though he has asthma that needs daily meds...And then there's Buster..I was volunteering an adoption event and they had a big cage with all the kittens playing together...except for one, who was in his own cage..when I asked why he wasn't with the others, they told me he had cerebellar hypoplasia, which means basically his balance and motor skills were very poor..so of course I had to take him home..that was 3 months ago and he's made great strides..Loves to play fetch and torment the other 2 cats!

Wilbur,T-do and George...
Four and a half years ago I was home on sick leave from work and waiting for knee surgery. Sitting on my patio I noticed movement in the back corner. Hummmm... a feral cat that I had been feeding for about 2 years was sticking pretty close to my back yard. She usually would come and go and drop in every once and a while for a snack. I was spending lots of time out there reading and waiting for the swelling to go down in my knee. At the time my Shih Tzu, Sophie was 15 years old and was slowing down but still enjoying life. She would sit at the screen door and watch the kitty snack. They both seemed content to leave each other alone. So cute! Well, the day a thought I saw movement in the corner I thought it was a leaf and ignored it. The next morning I was back in the rocker with the knee up and saw movement again. This was no leaf. I picked up my crutches and hobbled over and Miss Kitty ( she was named that day) was just standing there and I spoke to her...no reaction so I came closer and was I ever suprized. Four kittens their eyes were barely open and so very sweet. 2 tabbies and 2 black and whites. Oh my goodness, I was so thrilled. I have never had a kitty before. My daughter had come home to help me out with the surgery and we both fell in love with them. Ms. Kitty seemed to think we were alright with her babies and let us socialize them and play with them. We ended up losing one of the black and whites (even the vet school could not work magic) we were so sad but we had 3 left. Abbey named the laid back sweet grey Wilbur, I named T-do for a brazen kitty my dad had and Abbey decided the black and white would be hers and named him George. She said that he looked like a George. Even as a baby George would push the other 2 away from the food dish! He now weight 19 pounds and is such a character. Wilbur is still sweet and T-do still has very big ears. I treasure them and can not imagine my life with out them.

Airy has good recall, we had Shadz to the vet several times because she was so very ill with cat flu. She just lay in our arms, on her back, we even had to feed her in that position. I think we carried her around for almost 3 weeks like that until she was strong enough to walk around on her own. She still loves to be held upside down in our arms like a baby.

I can remember very clearly. I was in my late teens and it had been a few years since our dog and cat had passed on. MS, me and my sis went to local SPCA shelter. There were about two litters of cats there at the time (Heading into xmas so the rush hadn't quite started). The first kitten we saw was this almost pitch black cute thing that was sleepily curled up in the cage by the door. We had a look around at all the kittens and found a few cuties in the back but I couldn't help it and went back to this first kitten. Then I saw her brilliant blue eyes (most of the other kittens had blue/grey eyes). MS and sis followed and we all agreed she was the cutest (she was more awake by then and was rubbing against us).
We took her home and a few days later discovered she had cat flu. She was so helpless and pitiful looking but with alot of love and cradling her she made it through. She still likes to be cradled like we held her then.
Funnily enough one of my sis's friends had been to the SPCA a few days before us and had fallen in love with a kitten as well, but couldn't find it when she went back. Yup, that kitten was shadz. She seemed happy that shadz went to a good home :)
The sis's friend later adopted another little one (I think his name was max).

Wow, I don't know where to start... I have had so many kitties.... please bear with me because I think this post is going to be a mini-novel!

I will start with a precious little cat named Frosty.

Frosty was my ex-boyfriend now housemate's cat. Anthony was living in an apartment when one day, he found this tiny little Siamese kitten running loose. She was covered in fleas and in dire need of a bath. When he couldn't find her owner, he bathed her and got rid of the fleas.

A couple of months later, he began renting the spare room here at my grandmother's house and brought Frosty with him. A few months later, Frosty had 6 kittens. Sadly, Frosty went out one night and did not come back in. Anthony asked the neighbors if they had seen her, and the man said that she had been killed by a car. At first he said he had buried her, but then he retrieved Frosty's body from the garbage can. Anthony was devastated, and for a long time wondered if the neighbor had anything to do with Frosty's death.

We were both grieving, but there were kittens to take care of. Day and night, we fed and cared for 6 tiny little bundles. One of them, a very loud little siamese, drove us nuts! But she became Anthony's cat. He called her Smidgen because she was so small - a smidgen of a kitten. Meanwhile, homes were found for three of the other kittens and I wound up keeping the two remaining siamese brothers - Simon and Ruso. Simon was huge and furry, Ruso was fairly large with shorter fur.

As we were trying to deal with three beautiful cats, Anthony and one of his friends found a tiny grey kitten up in the foothills where they were hiking. He thought my mom might want the kitten, but instead, my grandmother wanted him. The kitten, who never grew very large (about the size of a 6 month old kitten) was named, Tasmanian Devil because he was always a whirlwind of trouble! If I heard a commotion in another room, all I had to do was yell, "Taz!! Get out of it!" and the kitty would come running. I would then go into the room Taz ran out of and clean up the mess! I loved Taz, my grandmother loved Taz, but Anthony hated him because he picked on the other cats - including Smidgen.

One day, I heard the dog next door barking and I looked out the window. Smidgen (who was blind but was an indoor/outdoor cat and never left the front yard) had somehow gotten into the other yard through a break in the fence. To this day, we cannot figure out why she had gone back there and how she got through the fence. I ran outside and jumped the fence. By that time, Goliath (a huge pit bull) had grabbed Smidgen. He dropped her as soon as I got over the fence and I yelled for Anthony. We took Smidgen to the vet, but she did not survive.

A few months later, Goliath came into the yard with another dog and cornered Ruso (also blind) under the house. By the time I got outside, Goliath and the other dog were running for their lives. Ruso had kicked butt!!! But he also got injured. Still, he survived the surgery to repair his broken leg and that was when we found out he was blind.

Not long after Ruso recovered from his injuries, there was a knock at the door. It was the kids from next door with a kitten. The said their dad wouldn't let them keep the kitty. I asked my grandmother, whose health was rapidly declining, if we could keep her and she said yes. We named the kitten Pepper because of her spicy personality. When it came to trouble, this little brat gave Taz a run for his money!!

Not long after my grandmother passed away, Pepper had a littler of 5 beautiful kittens and we wound up keeping all of them. Rusty, Pepper's only daughter, was my special little girl out of the bunch. She was the one who invented the "meow and run." If I was in the kitchen and Rusty wanted something, she would go to one of the kitchen doorways and meow. Before I could react, she would take of running and appear in the other doorway and meow again. She would continue to do this until I was at my wits' end and would start to follow her with a spray bottle or rolled up newspaper. But Rusty was no dummy. She would hide in a place I couldn't get to, then stick her head out and meow at me then go back into hiding again. Her mother, Pepper, taught this little girl well!

A couple of years later, C.C. showed up at my mom's house. The first time I saw her, she was under my mom's house peeking out at me. Many of you here know the story. For those who don't - http://www.catster.com/cats/772532

Mamma Kitty showed up one day as I was feeding the outdoor cats. She was still a kitten, but we found out a couple of weeks later that she was pregnant. I still remember the day when I put the food dish in on the porch rail front of her so she could eat, and she turned around and put her paws on my shoulder and gave me a kiss.

Shiva belonged to one of Anthony's friends. I met her when he brought her home in the cat carrier. It took a while, but Shiva and I finally bonded.

I got my first cat by learning about a coworker whose cat had gotten out and gotten pregnant. The kittens were around five of weeks of age and needed to find homes soon as the woman was going back to flight attendant school for retraining. I was informed that there were four male silver tabby kittens and one female all grey kitten . I had told myself I wanted a female kitten but at the time she had already been reserved for another coworker. Well, with a day or two, I was told the female kitten was now available because the other coworker already had four cats and her husband and said no more. So I went to my coworker's place and played with the kittens. They were all playing with one another. I picked up the little female kitten and took her home. She was all of six weeks of age. I hadn't prepared well and only had a box to bring her home in. Well, she didn't want to stay in the box so I had her sitting on my chest with her head tucked under my chin holding her with one hand while I steered the car with the other hand. She was the tinest kitten and fit completely including her tail in my hand. She didn't have much fur at all on her tail. I couldn't think of a name but looked at her face and noticed her long whiskers, so I named her Whiskers. She loved to play and do the indy 500 across the bed when she was little. She became a very loving cat in the last 6 years of her life with either sleeping on my chest or cuddling with me when I was on the couch. She was born on Feb 29th, 1988 and she died on Jan 28th, 2005 from chronic kidney disease and kidney failure and I still miss her a lot.

With Sylvester, I saw an ad on craigs list that had a link to petfinder dot com where I found his ad. He looked so sad in his picture that I had to "rescue" him. He was a crazy and very active kitten. He loved chasing and playing fetch when he was a kitten as well as playing with the feather on the wand. He has grown to be a mellow and loving kitty. When my marriage was crumbling in early 2007, I figured that eventually I might be moving out on my own and didn't want Sylvester to be alone so I decided I was going to adopt another cat or kitten. I went and looked at Susie's kitties but didn't adopt as for some reason I didn't feel a good connection with any of them. I saw Mia's ad on craigs list and after reading about her cuddling under the covers, coming when called and all, I decided to adopt her. She has been a very active kitty and helps keep Sylvester active. Mia loves Sylvester as she frequently will give him lickings on his head. I don't see him do it back to her unless they are about to wrestle. I would love to adopt more cats but for one I don't think Sylvester would like any more in the household and I am limited to two cats per the owners of my apartment complex.

WHOOPS!

I didn't like that, I knew nothing had "happened" to Hermes in our care.

He has such a smooshed face that he also wheezes quite a lot. He's a heavy boy, although we don't feed him excessively, he doesn't eat a lot on his own.
