Thank youi Eleniki! I was looking for places using TripAdvisor - the traveller reviews are very useful. And they have the Harding Hotel high on the recommended list and (in US Dollars) nearly half the cost of the Jury's.

I was thinking we might want to take this to email. You can email me at ekelly3 at gmu dot edu

(Return email may come from another account as the school account gets forwarded to main accounts.)

My sister and I are meeting this afternoon to try and book our flights and maybe the final hotels.

Now I have to go to the gym - need to get in the best possible shape to get the most out of this trip!

Here's a lovely hotel in Ballsbridge, a beautiful area in Dublin, about 2 miles from the city centre, which I found a good offer on, randomly putting in your dates (I guessed June 10-13, but you can change them at the top) They have a special offer for more than one night, as well they should have in this climate, when I believe our tourism is way down, no surprise there: http://www.bewleyshotels.com/ballsbridge/book_online/?price_group=1024
You'd have to book now I think, to get the offer. You should be able to find reviews on the site.
It was an old house and is really picturesque.
You're right about Temple Bar - horrendous place to try to sleep in! I'm surprised about Jury's Inn - when they first opened they had some great prices, like €49 per room. All that's changed I see.
Here's another pretty good place - I've had a meal here in the bar and it's well-located and seems spacious and pleasant - you can read the reviews too. A bit dearer, but not as dear as Jury's. This is the booking/price page:
http://reservations.goireland.com/bkgPremInfo.asp?Affiliateid=1&Affiliatevisitid=0&selNumAdults=2&selNumChildren=0&selNumInfants=0&selArriveDay=10&selArriveMonth=06&selArriveYear=2010&selNumNights=3&PremisesCode=HHS04058&provid=20&HdnAction=search&IsAdvanced=1
You can read the reviews on the customer rating bar.
Here's a hotel that used to be a boys' home and my father stayed there for the first year or so when he came up to Dublin as a raw country lad from the depths of West Cork (hope you get to west cork, it's stunning - two of my brothers live there). The Harding Hotel is literally beside Christ Church Cathedral (where by the way I was a chorister for 26 years, travelled the world with the choir - you must try to get a Thursday evensong in there or a Sunday service!) and more or less opposite Jury's Inn. Seems basic but clean and spacious.
The advantage of the latter two places is that they are very central; you can walk into town. Bewley's, the first one, is a short and easy bus ride away and may be worth it for the quiet factor. See how you get on TM, but please run name and location of any hotel you try to book by me first, as there are some in very dodgy areas, I noticed in my quick search. We can talk about things to see once you've booked. Maybe it would be best for me to give you my email address....

We are going in early June and that is exactly what we are doing Eleniki! We have 1 night in Dublin then a 6 day tour of the Southwest with Wolfhound Tours and then 3 days in Dublin again.

Dublin at least seems very expensive! The tour recommended the Jury's Inn near ChristChurch because we leave from there at 8am but the price of on night there seemed a bit high. I started looking for something else close by and apparently that is just a little high. That seems to be the center of town and a very pricey area as well. Can I go further out of the city center and still get to that site at 8am on Saturday without a car? I found some less expensive places in the Temple Bar area but I am afraid they might be noisy on a Friday night in June. For the last 3 nights we definitely want a B&B and we are fine with walking and taking buses to get around town.

I have been dreaming of visiting Ireland for decades! My sister and I have been actively talking about this trip for 2 years. May of 2008 we went to England - our first ever international vacation. The original plan was England and Ireland in 2 weeks but we decided there was too much to see in both places and went with England only for the first trip.

(sorry for long post - very excited about this trip!)

A co-worker went last year and had over a thousand photo's and I loved every one. What a BEAUTIFUL country. We did have a discussion about food. For instance we both love goat cheese, but there it tastes very different. Much stronger. She was told that is because ours is processed. She said it had a strong, gamey flavor. Another co-worker is going in June. I'm so jealous! C'mon lottery! ('course, i gotta get out of the house to play it!)

Hi TM! MCW just mailed me and yes, I live in Dublin. How cool that you're visiting Dublin! When are you coming?
I'm guessing you're doing a tour around the country, then finishing with the 3 days in Dublin. You won't be disappointed with the beauty of the west and south coasts (where I imagine you'll go on your tour). The landscape is quite wild and unique in parts of the west particularly - a bit like the west coast of the Scottish highlands. The bird life is plentiful and the sea cliffs are wonderful. I warn you to expect things to cost more than you may be used to though. It's a sad fact that this country is expensive, and often the expense is not justifiable, particularly at the moment, when we are in recession. So, try to economize as much as you can, by packing your lunch from the breakfast in the hotel etc! Then you'll have more cash to buy those nice Irish souvenirs and knits...

yes, a cat within normal weight and activity range (ie 9 lbs, some running/jumping during day) should be eating 2 to 3% of his body weight. So, 3 to 4 oz per day of food is good, for this weight, maybe 5oz if he's more active than the average furkin. But add your supplements, as per the recipe!

By the way, since going on a solely raw diet, and I mean with no processed or commercial food at all, I have taken miso off her inhaler completely. And she's doing really well - almost no 'cough' or hiccup now, and no panting that I have seen in almost 3 months. She still can't really purr, but she's working on it!

I think (if I am doing the math correct) a cat would need a bit over 1.5 cups of water just to stay hydrated on 1 cup of kibble.

I doubt any cat would ever drink that much.

Again it is very likely the "meat by-products" in the canned that contain plastic, paper, euthanasia drugs, or even other cats/dogs? Totally legal ingrediants which is just another reason to switch to a raw diet!

Iams has their own huge share of issues (iamscruelty.com) and use tons of grains + little meat. Our furry carnivores only can digest meat ;)

All I can do is post this again. http://www.blakkatz.com/dryfood.html
Here's a quote from this link:
"Cats are not thirst driven like dogs and are able to survive on less water than dogs. They compensate for reduced water intake by concentrating their urine. When fed a dry food diet (which has less than 10 percent moisture), unless they drink a lot of water, which most cats do not, they are in a constant state of dehydration. Moreover, although a cat consuming a dry food diet does drink more water than a cat consuming a canned food diet, in the end, when water from all sources is added together — what's in their diet plus what they drink — the cat consumes approximately HALF the amount of water compared with a cat eating canned foods.6 On a dry food diet, a cat's urine becomes overly concentrated which leads to feline lower urinary tract disease. Consumption of dry food is associated with lower urinary tract disease as is increased frequency of feeding (a.k.a "free feeding" which is how most people feed dry food), no matter what type of food is fed.....Water, the most important nutrient for all living beings, is missing from dry cat food. It cannot be replaced or substituted."
Even if your cat is drinking water, she cannot replace the water she should be finding in her food, nor the water that is being leached from her system by dry food. I am glad you're going to research a better quality, low-grain, higher meat-content canned food, but the dry is not the answer.

she isn't dehyrdrated, she gets plenty of water, but she seems happier without the canned food for the time being so that's the way I'm going to approach this situation.

I temporarily stopped Izzy's canned food intake and she isn't having any other issues with diarrhea so that's how I figured out that the canned is what was doing it. For now she's only on dry, I'm going to look for a different canned food to try her with, but for now I'm just going to stick with dry, my baby is happy and without issues for the time being, so therefore I am happy. :D

This might be slightly off-topic.., but here in indonesia, people consume viscera. And some people even eat dogs. These are 2 things that I don't eat, though. But I especially like chicken feet. I believe it is a delicacy in chinese cuisine.

I know this sound gross... *sorry*

About viscera, it is said that it is too high in cholesterol, but other than that, they say it is delicious and high in vitamins and energy.

As for dogs, well, I'm highly opposed to eating dogs. But there are restaurants scattered all over the city. As to how they killed the barking buddies, that might be a disturbing story, too disturbing to explain here.

But one thing's for sure, they are not roadkills, though...

I'm just GLAD indonesia don't produce pet foods, otherwise, who knows what might end up in there?

Agreed FF. Love the vid of Amiga and her chicken leg by the way. But I'd love to have seen her actually get into the marrow of the bone. Did she eventually consume the entire leg, or is that bone a bit too hard?

It may not be the wet food giving her diarrhea but the ingredients in the Friskies. Look at them, none of the Friskies have really good ingredients. They all have MEAT by-products which could very easily give a cat diarrhea.
Meat by-products consist of the 4D’s (dead, diseased, dying, or disabled) animals.

A quote of what CAN legally be in meat by-products:
"Dogs and cats euthanised at clinics, pounds and shelters are sold to rendering plants, rendered with other material and sold to the pet food industry. One small rendering plant in Quebec was rendering 10 tonnes (11 tons) of dogs and cats per week from Ontario. The Ministry of Agriculture in Quebec, where a number of these plants are located, advised me that "The fur is not removed from dogs and cats." and that "Dead animals are cooked together with viscera, bones and fats in 115 C (236 F) for twenty minutes." One large pet food company in the U.S., with extensive research facilities, used rendered dogs and cats in their food for years and when the information came to light"claimed no knowledge of it."
- Ann Martin, Natural Pet Magazine

“Difficult as it may be to believe, millions of these dead American dogs and cats are processed each year at plants across North America. Eileen Layne of the California Veterinary Medical Association states "When you read pet-food labels and it says meat meal or bone meal, that's what it is - cooked and converted animals, including dogs and cats."

Road kill, slaughter house rejects, animals that die on their way to meat packing plants - all are acceptable ingredients for pet food under the "4D" rule - diseased, disabled, dead and dying. Steroids, growth hormones and chemicals used to treat cattle for infestations - including insecticide patches - again end up mixed into the final product. Meat from grocery stores past its final due date is also added to the mix, as are the Styrofoam trays and plastic wrap they were packed in.”

If you want more referances check this google search:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=4d+pet+food&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g10

So who really says its wet food giving her problems? It could easily be the plastic or drugs used to euthanize the animals. Or it could be the grains (soy especially). Or wheat gluten which spurred the huge recall a few years ago.

I too am willing to bet that if you put her on a balanced raw diet all the problems would disappear in a month or two.

I posted some pictures of mine a week or so ago and how they are doing on their raw diet. Panther (black female) used to be covered in dandruff, flea dirt, and raw scabs from being allergic to the highest quality canned and dry food. A few months later on a total raw diet look at how she is! The pictures can’t even show how healthy she is. When she is walking you see her muscles moving under her fur. Her fur is extremely shiny, her eyes are bright, and she gets joy out of life. All it took was putting her on a easy to make raw frankenprey diet.
