Today in Strangeness:

On this date in 1986, Bill Buckner earned a place in sports infamy when the Red Sox first baseman failed to field a routine ground ball, allowing the NY Mets to defeat Boston in Game 6 of the World Series. The error was so egregious that Buckner became vilified by the team's fan base and he was forced to leave the state of Massachusetts. Twenty-two years later, Buckner returned to Boston to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the 2008 season and received a four-minute standing ovation from the remorseful Fenway Park crowd.

Today is Wednesday, Oct. 26, the 299th day of 2011. There are 66 days left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On Oct. 26, 1861, the legendary Pony Express officially ceased operations, giving way to the transcontinental telegraph. (The last run of the Pony Express was completed the following month.)
In 1881, the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" took place in Tombstone, Ariz.
In 1911, "The Queen of Gospel," singer and civil rights activist Mahalia Jackson, was born in New Orleans.
In 1942, Japanese planes badly damaged the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands during World War II. (The Hornet sank early the next morning.)
In 1979, South Korean President Park Chung-hee was shot to death during a dinner party along with his chief bodyguard by the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, Kim Jae-kyu, who was later executed.
In 1980, Israeli President Yitzhak Navon became the first Israeli head of state to visit Egypt.
In 1994, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel and Prime Minister Abdel Salam Majali of Jordan signed a peace treaty during a ceremony at the Israeli-Jordanian border attended by President Bill Clinton.
Ten years ago: President George W. Bush signed the USA PATRIOT Act, giving authorities unprecedented ability to search, seize, detain or eavesdrop in their pursuit of possible terrorists. Former nurse's aide Chante Mallard struck a homeless man, Gregory Biggs, with her car on a Fort Worth, Texas, highway; Biggs, who became lodged in the windshield, died after Mallard refused to seek assistance for him and instead enlisted the help of a friend and his cousin to dispose of his body after he died. (Mallard was later convicted of murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison.)
Five years ago: A wildfire in Southern California killed five firefighters (investigators later determined the cause of the blaze was arson). President George W. Bush signed a measure authorizing 700 miles of new fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border. The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 to take a 3-1 lead in the World Series.
One year ago: Saddam Hussein's foreign minister, Tariq Aziz, was sentenced to death for persecuting members of Shiite religious parties under the former regime. (The sentence has yet to be carried out.) Iran began loading fuel into the core of its first nuclear power plant. A day after an earthquake sparked a deadly tsunami, Indonesia saw another natural disaster as Mount Merapi (meh-RAH'-pee) began erupting, resulting in hundreds of deaths in the weeks that followed.

I feel your pain, AZ--2 weeks ago I had 2 nails in one tire (thank goodness the last houses are being built on my street) and one was in the sidewall. No big deal, right? $354.00 FOR ONE TIRE!!! Plus, the lifespan is only about 15,000 miles on them! Ended up getting 2, and they couldn't rotate the front tires to the back because they're 1" different. Geez!

KOTSW? Does that mean 'Knackered out through Saturday week?' ;)

Wish I had this much imagination when naming my crew...

Hey there JK, Kykat, Linda, CSBM, 12P, OpaHall, Kilroy.

GD, looks like the sign is out at your place, Kind Cat Woman here for all the kitties.

FH, love the picture of the puppy :)

KK, love your picture too, meant to mention it the other day.

Joan, positive energy to you {{{Joan}}}

FH, hmmm the infused whipped cream sounds good right now...

My head feels like it isn't even attached today, went to put air in my tires and/or have Discount Tires check it this morning for a slow leak. They are good guys but when I was told no it wasn't repairable because there was a nail deeply embedded (2nd one in a year because of all the flipping construction on the streets here) I left almost $400 later with two brand new tires. Ugh was not what was needed for the day but guess it could have been worse, merry holidays to my car.

Sisters! LOL at FH & hers sister. That LIQUOR INFUSED WHIPPING CREAM sounds wonderful. In my family KK is the bad influence on me! ! But I don't put up much resistance.
Kilroy, so glad to hear that George has a diagnosis and is being treated.

Joan, sending you lots of positive energy.
Kilroy, I'm so glad that George got to the vet and has been diagnosed. I was worried about my fellow ginger-being. Ouch to the bill but that's what emergency funds are for.
FH, got to laugh at you and sister arriving at liquor store at same time! Do we need an intervention? The cream does sound rather tasty though. Squirt some through the wormhole - and I think Kilroy and Joan need a double dose on their hot chocolates today.

Speaking of whipped cream, has anyone else tried the liquor infused whipping cream? YES, I SAID LIQUOR INFUSED WHIPPING CREAM!!! My sister (she's older, so she IS supposed to be a bad influence on me!) mentioned it Saturday morning at breakfast, so I immediately headed to the liquor store. Lo and behold, she pulled in right in back of me. So, I left there with vanilla and raspberry flavored. IT'S STRONG STUFF!!! I'm thinking the raspberry will be great in a cup of hot cocoa!

GD...Re: OTC Clavamox. I use Fish Mox, which is amoxicillin. I use it to treat MINOR injuries, sneezing and mild congestion. One 250mg cap sprinkled in food daily. It is not an overnight cure, and takes several days to kick in, as does Clavamox. I don't know if Petsmart or local pet supply stores carry it. I've only purchased from Entirely Pets. Oddly the 30 cap supply is the same price that I paid 2 years ago, and the 100 cap's I got last year has gone up $5.00.
